A home on County Road 626 located just outside Jemison city limits was destroyed by fire late Saturday night.

The blaze occurred around 11:05 p.m. Saturday. No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured in the blaze.

Collins Chapel Fire Chief Mike Minor said the house had been burning for a while before the fire department was called. He said that a former firefighter saw the blaze one-half of a mile away and called it in.

“The roof was already gone by the time we got there,” he said. “The conditions were too dangerous for any firefighter to get inside of the house. No one was inside the house.”

Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire and where it started. The glow of the fire could be seen as far as a couple of miles away.

Collins Chapel and Thorsby fire departments were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters were called back out to the scene two other times Sunday because the fire had rekindled.
