I doubt that I am the only one who drives past the former site of Henry M. Adair School every day and wonders why it is still an eyesore.

Granted, the Board of Education is building a new school right now, and I admit that is a much more important project for the county’s future. But just one workday would improve the looks of this vacant lot.

Those of us who attended the school were sad enough to see it go, although I do agree that the building was outdated and not near as safe as the present-day Clanton Middle School facility. But it’s a shame just to let this property sit there without making it look half decent.

Earlier this week, I was talking to members of the Chilton County High School Class of 1948, who attended the old school building when it was CCHS. They seem to feel the same way.

Improving this site would be a great project for Chilton Leadership or any volunteer group that wants to do something positive for the community. Living less than a mile from there, I would be glad to pitch in myself, although my experience with landscaping is severely limited.

Soon after the old school building was torn down, I heard talk that the Board wanted to put down some sod and maybe install a couple of park benches there. The property has also been the proposed site of new structures.

If the site were located out in the boonies, then I might understand somebody letting it go. But its location next to the Clanton City Cemetery is pretty prominent, or at least it should be. These sites should reflect well on our city, county and community.

I thought it was a good idea to leave the columns and steps standing as a monument, but I would guess that they could use a little maintenance as well.

It would also be neat if there were some kind of marker placed onsite. This would preserve its history and accentuate the beautiful, old trees that still stand there.
