MONTGOMERY (AP) – Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks is urging Alabama consumers to avoid eating Chinese made “Koala’s March” creme-filled cookies – either strawberry or chocolate flavors.

Sparks says lab tests confirmed the presence of the chemical melamine in the cookie.

Melamine is used to make plastics.

Melamine also was found in “White Rabbit Creamy Candy” sold in Alabama stores. The product was recalled.

Melamine can cause kidney stones as the body tries to eliminate it and, in extreme cases, lead to life-threatening kidney failure. Infants are particularly susceptible.

Chinese milk products tainted with the chemical have been removed in dozens of countries.
