The City of Clanton will replace a bridge on Eighth Street down from Rolling Oaks Apartments.

The bridge is similar in construction to a bridge on Enterprise Road, which was recently replaced. The one on Enterprise had a wooden substructure that had begun to rot and had partially separated from the supporting beams.

The City Council voted Monday night to request bids on the project.

The city is also planning to replace a culvert on Dunlap Drive, which connects Airport Road with Lake Mitchell Road. The culvert is located next to a meat-processing clinic.

In other business, Mayor Billy Joe Driver reported that the city’s requests for traffic signals at the intersection of Lay Dam Road and Friendship Road, and at the intersection of Highway 31 and Temple Road were denied.

The placement of traffic signals on state highways must be approved by the state Department of Transportation.

The state recently approved a request for a signal at Lay Dam Road and Ollie Avenue, however.

During the meeting, one resident addressed the need for directional arrows coming out of CVS/pharmacy at the intersection of 31 and Ollie Avenue.

“It’s quite confusing, I’ve noticed,” resident James Dunlap said.

The city also:

Amended the animal control ordinance limiting the number of adult cats per household at four. The amendment includes a provision to grandfather in those already in violation. It also excludes kittens under 3 months.

Rezoned property at the intersection of Airport Road and Dunlap Drive from M1 (manufacturing) to R1B (residential).

Approved the promotion of Clanton Police Department clerk Katrina Caver from part-time to full-time, at the recommendation of Chief James Henderson.

Reappointed Larry Culpepper and Steve Mims to the Housing Authority Board.

Hired Rick Bush Jr. for the Beautification Department and hired Chad Lawrence part-time at City Park.
