Two people were injured in an SUV rollover wreck on I-65 yesterday morning.

One patient was airlifted to the hospital while another went by ambulance. The conditions or identities of the victims were not immediately known, but Sheriff Kevin Davis said the victims were from the Birmingham area.

About 11:15 a.m. yesterday, the SUV appeared to be traveling southbound on I-65 when it left the roadway near the 216-mile marker. The vehicle then flipped several times and came to a stop just outside of the woods.

One wheel broke off the vehicle and landed in the median more than 50 yards away.

Traffic was slowed around the wreck scene, but the interstate was not shut down.

Union Grove and Jemison fire departments were dispatched to the scene. Emergency workers used extrication tools to open the door on the driver’s side to rescue the driver of the vehicle.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash.
