Mustangs hitting their stride

Isabella had all phases of its game working on Monday in wins over Thorsby (25-8, 25-13, 28-26) and Montevallo (25-16, 27-25).

The offense came in the form of sets from Krysta Tyler (28 assists combined in the two matches) and attacks from Amber Wyatt (27 kills) and Carissa Eiland (13 kills).

Kimi Jones led the defense with 18 digs for the Mustangs (17-3), and RaeLynn Liveoak led the service game with seven aces.

Thorsby took a 23-22 lead in the third game of its match with Isabella as Kendra Dawson served for seven consecutive points, four of which were aces, but the Rebels (5-20) couldn’t hold on.

Thorsby’s Michelle Hendrix had five assists and two saves in that match. Brittany Maddox posted two kills, two blocks and four digs.

Dawson recorded five aces, four digs and three saves, and Stephanie Moore had five kills.

Montevallo defeated Thorsby in the other varsity match, 25-18, 25-18.

Isabella’s junior varsity team took a 25-6, 25-14 decision over Thorsby. The Mustangs (7-1) aced their opponents 14 times. KayLynn Culp was responsible for six of those aces, and Jessica Maciel had five to go along with five assists.

Devan Gallet contributed four kills.

Amanda Gutierrez had five digs, one kill and one ace for Thorsby. Kelly Nord was good for four assists, one ace and one dig, and Kaitlyn Lewis tallied three digs, one kill and one block.

The Isabella junior high team was also successful, winning 25-9, 25-20.

Three local teams compete in Jemison Invitational

Thorsby lost all three matches it played in Jemison’s invitational tournament on Sept. 20. The Rebels fell to Chilton County High (13-25, 12-25), Central-Tuscaloosa (23-25, 25-20, 1-15) and Montevallo (19-25, 23-25).

Hendrix had five kills, 10 assists, six aces and four digs in the tournament. Maddox had nine kills, two blocks, four aces and 11 digs. Moore posted 10 kills, three blocks and five digs, and Holly Smith recorded two kills, 12 assists and five aces. Dawson had two aces and eight digs, and Keri Whitman had three kills, six aces and eight digs.

Jemison defeated Calera (25-6, 25-12), defeated Marbury (25-16, 25-23) then lost to Central-Coosa (25-20, 22-25, 9-15) in pool play.

The Panthers (13-6) were then seeded No. 2 in the single-elimination portion of the tournament but fell to CCHS (22-25, 22-25). No statistics for Jemison players were available.

CCHS lost to Central-Tuscaloosa and took home second place for the tournament. Tylita Harrell led the Tiger attack with 16 kills in the tournament, and Clarissa Galvan added 13 kills, five aces and six digs.

Vernice Trimble put up four kills and eight aces, and Lauren Stewart had five aces.

Local players included on the all-tournament team were Thorsby’s Maddox, Chilton’s Galvan and Harrell, and Jemison’s Tabatha Cork and Kasi Wells.

Isabella splits four matches at Donoho tournament

Isabella defeated Faith Christian of Anniston (25-19, 25-19) and Zion Christian of Columbia, Tenn. (25-17, 25-20) at a tournament in Donoho on Sept. 20. The Mustangs lost to Jefferson Christian (15-25, 18-25) and Saks (13-25, 26-28).

Tyler had 16 assists in the tournament to go along with nine aces and eight digs. Deanna Blozik had four kills and 11 assists, and Liveoak had seven aces and 14 digs.

Eiland posted 22 kills, five aces, five digs and nine blocks. Ruby Fernandez had five kills and 20 digs, and Marlee Hayes contributed 26 assists.

Jones had 16 digs, and Wyatt had 29 kills and four blocks.
