Harris to be honored on UA campus

Andrea Nicole Harris, a sophomore at The University of Alabama, has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). She will be honored during an upcoming Induction Convocation to be held on the U. of A. Campus in September.

NSCS is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for freshmen and sophomore college students. Membership is by invitation only based on GPA and class standing.

Andrea is the daughter of Benny and Glena Harris of Deats-ville. Her grandparents are James and Peggie Harris of Clanton and Juanita Dorriety of Geneva.

Andrea has also been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement.

During her freshman year at the University of Alabama, Andrea was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year university students. She was also honored by Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor society for students who have earned a 3.5 or higher GPA and are in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year of higher education.

MONTGOMERY – The festival that embraces rich traditions and is committed to providing cultural experiences form the African Diaspora, keeps getting bigger.

The two-day festival will attract a local and national audience of thousands of visitors. Embracing a spirit of community, the Expo will include areas for children, education, visual and performing arts, vendors, health fair, entertainment and community organizations.

The Star-studded event will include a scheduled performance by the Legendary Regina Belle singing live at 2:30 p.m. with the Hallelujah 104.3 FM Gospel Choir, From Ludacris DPT record label in Atlanta R&B Singer Jarvis singing “Pretty Girl” live at 6 p.m., From Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Madeas’ Family Reunion Actor Cedric Pendleton at 1 p.m., 2008 Jet Magazine Jet Beauties Kenyetta Smiley, Antedria Martin and Melensia Hunter, Miss Black Alabama 2008 Kimberly Brown at 4 p.m., 2008 Grammy nominated music producers DaGrindaz and local artist M3 and the IronKidZ.

The growth and development of the Expo includes a name change and added logo. The name change from the River Region Black Expo to the River Region Expo to embrace the changing face of diversity in the area. This year’s focus is on Families, Businesses & Community. The expo has been expanded over several locations to include more participation of the city’s venues. The newly added 5K Fun Run will be at Oak Park on Saturday, Sept. 13 beginning at 9 a.m. and the Pre-Expo VIP Cocktail Reception will be held at Renaissance Hotel and Spa in Montgomery on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. followed by a full day Expo on Saturday at the Acadome.
