Local woman nominated for radio award

Connye Bryant of Clanton, the host of a gospel radio show on Montgomery’s 104.3 Hallelujah FM, has received a nomination for the 2008 Radio & Recording Personality of the Year Award.

She will represent Chilton County and Alabama this month at the Radio & Records Convention in Austin, Texas at the Hilton Austin Hotel and the Austin Convention Center.

Known in Montgomery as the “Queen of Gospel,” Bryant hosts a live radio program Monday through Saturday from 6-10 a.m.

“We consider this a great honor, but more especially a blessing from God,” states a flyer being circulated by Bryant’s church family at Morning Star Baptist Church and her friends in the Chilton County community.

A fundraising singing for Bryant is being held today at Morning Star beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include singers from Chilton, Shelby, Elmore, Montgomery and Autauga counties and other areas.

Connye Bryant biography

Connye D’lita Bryant is the daughter of Milton and the late Claudia Bryant of Clanton. After graduating from Chilton County High School, she continued her education at Alabama State University and received her Bachelor of Arts in radio/TV broadcasting and minor in English/writing.

Bryant’s started her radio career as the voice for Calhoun Foods, a chain of stores in Montgomery, Selma, and Tuskegee, in 1987. After this launch in the radio industry, she received employment with WXVI 1600 AM. She landed her first on-air position in 1992 as the host of “Perfect Praise,” a gospel musical program, which aired daily from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Bryant is a former member of the largest announcer’s organization in the world, the Gospel Music Workshop of America Announcer’s Guild under the leadership of Al “the Bishop” Hobbs. Bryant serves as second vice president of the South Central Alabama Gospel Announcers Guild (GAG). In July 2008, she was named program director and music director for WHLW-FM 104.3.

Bryant is a true lover of gospel music and a local gospel promoter. She has been with Clear Channel Communications since 1998.

Bryant has shared the stage with such greats as The Williams Brothers, The Canton Spirituals, the Rev. Andrew Chears and the Songbirds, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, John P. Kee, Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, Pastor Marvin Sapp, The Christian Aires, Lee Williams, and the list continues.

Bryant is a proud member of Morning Star Baptist in Clanton where her pastor is Keith L. Moore. She is a very active member in her church and has a love for all people, especially the young generation.

Bryant received her ministerial license on June 3, 2007 and was ordained as an evangelist on Nov. 11, 2007.
