The severe weather triggered by Tropical Depression Fay has impacted the blood supply in the Montgomery area.

“With tornado warnings and driving rain we’ve had several blood drives cancelled in and around Montgomery,” said LifeSouth Community Blood Centers Montgomery Branch Director Sharon Carpenter. “These difficulties can come when the need for blood can increase if there are injuries due to these conditions.”

The LifeSouth donor center in Montgomery, 1601 Eastern Boulevard, will be open today and Tuesday until 7 p.m. and will remain open as long as there are donors waiting to give. There will also be blood drives taking place in other locations served by LifeSouth and donors can call toll-free at 888 795-2707 to find the times and locations of the drives closest to them.

LifeSouth operates community-based blood centers in Florida, Georgia and Alabama providing blood and blood components to more than 125 medical facilities. To meet the hospitals’ needs, it requires more than 800 volunteer donors daily. Anyone 17 or older, in good physical condition and weighing a minimum of 110 pounds may donate. A photo ID is required.
