Maplesville tonight will begin its 2008 season where the 2007 season ended: Sweet Water.

The Red Devils will play the second game of a three-year agreement with Sweet Water and Brantley for preseason exhibition games. Maplesville hosted the jamboree last year, and Brantley will host next year.

“This lets you know right off the bat where you stand,” Maplesville coach Brent Hubbert said.

That will be a question for many contributors on a Maplesville team that lost nine starters on defense plus its quarterback and many players at ball handling positions. Hubbert said he hopes a spring game contest against Class 2A power Clay County High showed his team what it needed to do during the offseason.

The Red Devils will find out more tonight. The teams plan to play their starters for 16 minutes and then backups for 8 minutes, Hubbert said.

County teams Chilton County High, Jemison and Verbena will also be in action tonight. The Panthers host the Red Devils at 7 p.m., and CCHS visits Calera at the same time.
