As if six straight years of bragging rights wasn’t enough, Chilton County Auburn fans are challenging their Alabama counterparts.

This challenge, though, is good-natured.

The Chilton Auburn Club on Saturday will hold its second scholarship golf tournament, which is part of the club’s goal to raise enough money each year to provide at least one scholarship for a county resident that has been accepted to Auburn. Club member Charles Bates wants to see Crimson Tide fans provide scholarships to Alabama.

“We’re not so naive as to think it’s about Alabama or Auburn,” Bates said. “We’re looking out for the kids of Chilton County.”

Those interested in the tournament at the Clanton Country Club can register before one of the two times (8 a.m. and 1 p.m.) or ahead of time by calling Bates Pool at 755-7946. Registration costs $150 for a two-person team, and all proceeds will go into the scholarship fund.

The tournament will have a 40-team maximum, Bates said, and 30 had signed up as of Aug. 15.

Prizes will be given out for overall winners as well as for closest to the pin and longest drive.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 to noon for all that play, and the club will hold its Kickoff Party at 6 that evening. The dinner is for club members only, but Bates said anyone interested in joining the club can get more information after the tournament.

Mark Murphy, editor of Inside the Auburn Tigers, will speak to the club at about 6:30 p.m.

“He comes and talks to us about how good we’re going to be,” Bates said.
