Olivia Hughes graduated from high school 14 years. She has never attended college until now.

Hughes, who is taking four classes this fall, is one of the numerous students across Chilton County who are enrolled in the Jefferson State Community College extension in Clanton. Classes began yesterday at the old McKinnon Toyota building.

While most of the students enrolled are in the “traditional college student” 18-23 age, there is a number of adults like Hughes who have started working and are going back to school.

“We’ve had quite a few working adults coming in to take night classes,” Hobbs said. “We do have a pretty good mixture of students here.”

Most of the classes are occurring in the day session, which has classes from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for the day session and classes from 5 to 9:15 p.m. for the night session. Working adults are taking mostly night classes while more traditional students can be found during the day.

Hobbs said they had a few changes to the class schedule since registration, but they are making sure all the students get the word.

“We’ve had a great day today,” he said.

Classes are being held temporarily at the old dealership’s store, but in October, classes will move into the newly completed building on Lay Dam Road.

Hughes said she doesn’t know what to expect from the classes.

“I’m excited and nervous at the same time,” Hughes said. “I’m just going to give this a chance and see what happens.”
