This year’s municipal election in Thorsby is unusual and historic.

For the first time in a long time or perhaps ever, three people have qualified to run for the mayor’s job. Because of this, a group of residents along with Thorsby High School’s Student Government Association has organized a town meeting to let the mayoral candidates speak to voters in a public forum.

The meeting has been set for Saturday afternoon at 4 in Thorsby High School’s auditorium. All residents are invited to attend.

April Moon, one of the organizers of the event, said all three candidates – incumbent Tom Bentley, Tracia Bussey and Dearyl Hilyer – have agreed to show up at the event.

“This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who is voting in the election to come and hear all three candidates at one time,” Moon said. “All three candidates said they are interested in the meeting.”

Moon said the candidates have already been given a list of 10 questions that will be asked during the event by an independent moderator. Members of the community will also have the chance to submit a question to ask during the event.

“There will not be an open mic for the public, but we will allow residents to submit their questions in writing before the meeting. The moderator will ask the candidates those questions as well,” Moon said.

The event organizers are not trying to censor the public’s questions, but they want to make sure the meeting runs smoothly.

“We want to make sure that the meeting is pleasant and orderly,” Moon said. “We hope everyone who plans to vote in the election will attend this event.”
