A 4-year-old boy died in what has been confirmed an accidental drowning on Lay Lake late yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred on Waxahatchee Creek just inside Chilton County.

An extensive search turned up the body after Union Grove Fire and Rescue, Chilton County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Chilton County Special Operations Unit Dive Team, Calera’s Dive Team, South Shelby Rescue, Chilton County Rescue Squad and Regional Paramedical Services responded to the call.

Chilton County Deputy Coroner Awlahjaday Agee pronounced the victim dead at 7:14 p.m.

“It’s an awful situation,” said Sheriff Kevin Davis. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones.”

Davis said the boy’s family members were reportedly close by and witnessed him go into the water.

No names have been released, but the family is reportedly from the area.

Agee said the case was among the most difficult cases he had handled as deputy coroner.

No foul play is suspected in the incident, Davis said.
