Motorists on I-65 were forced to move off the interstate Wednesday night and early yesterday morning after an 18-wheeler hauling 107 cows overturned at the 201-mile marker.

Officials including state troopers, Chilton County Sheriff’s Department, Clanton Police, Verbena Fire Department, Marbury Fire Department, Pine Level Fire Department, Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, state veterinarians and private veterinarians responded to corral the 70 or so that had gotten loose on the north and southbound sides of the interstate. Thirty of the cows were trapped in the trailer.

Traffic was shut down on I-65 from Exit 205 in Clanton to Exit 186 in Pine Level. In addition to the initial wreck, one other crash was caused by the cows roaming free. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Martha Earnhardt said there were no injuries in that accident.

“It appears like there was only property damage,” Earnhardt said.

Earnhardt added that six or seven of the cows are still missing at this time.

State troopers are investigating the crash.
