First United Methodist Church of Clanton is now holding registration for its Divorce Care ministry.

The program begins Aug. 19 and runs for 13 consecutive weeks, one night per week, in the worship center of the Helen E. Parrish Activity Building.

Divorce Care is for those who are going through the pain of divorce, have separated from their spouse, or are contemplating divorce. The ministry’s goal is to offer support among its participants.

“Our role is really to get people connected with each other for support and encouragement, and to facilitate healing in a safe environment,” said Freddie Nichols, co-facilitator.

Nichols is also the pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Montgomery, and is familiar with the unique problems presented by divorce.

“When you go through a divorce, pretty much everyone goes through the same things,” he said. “This ministry attempts to address the special needs divorced people go through.”

This will be the third session of Divorce Care at the church. Each participant gets a workbook, which covers topics such as loss, grief, finances, new relationships, children, and what the Bible says about divorce.

Each session also includes a video series featuring different well-known speakers including Dr. Tony Evans, Kay Arthur, Dr. Archibald Hart and Norm Wright.

The materials form the foundation for group discussion at each of the meetings.

Co-facilitator Brenda Godbold said the previous two sessions were very beneficial for those who attended.

“It helped them to find answers to problems they encountered while going through the divorce and recovery,” she said.

The only cost is $12 for the workbook, but Nichols and Godbold do not want the cost to keep anyone from attending.

“If there is a problem [with the cost],” just let us know,” Godbold said.
