We are saddened by the sudden loss of Alabama Power employee Robert Lynn Courtney, who died as a result of drowning following a tragic accident at Mitchell Dam yesterday morning.

Courtney, 52, of Verbena had worked for 20 years at the dam and 35 total years with Alabama Power.

Obviously, Courtney was a beloved husband, father and pastor. He served as pastor of West End Church of Christ in Clanton.

We cannot imagine the overwhelming loss and shock felt by his family, close friends and congregation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them, and we encourage continued prayer and support for the family members as they endure the often lengthy grieving process.

Thanks to all groups and individuals who responded to the scene, including the Chilton County Sheriff’s Special Operations Unit, Verbena Fire Department and East Chilton Fire Department. We are grateful for these first responders who did everything within the realm of possibility to save the victim.
