Residents mad about loose livestock

A delegation of residents from Deer Run Subdivision asked the Clanton City Council last night to take action to stop livestock from roaming through their neighborhood.

The delegation, led by Ken Willis, said cattle, pigs and horses routinely go through the fence on property adjacent to their homes and damage their lawns. Several homeowners said the animals could be dangerous to children as well as adults in the area.

Clanton Police Chief James Henderson said two citations have been issued to Michael Crowe, the person in charge of the animals, over the past two weeks. He said the cases are scheduled to be heard in city court in early August.

“We have let him know that we will continue to issue citations when we are called over there (when the animals are out).” Henderson said.

The residents said the animals have also created smell and fly problems for the neighborhood. Two residents complained of dead animals being left in the field adjacent to their homes.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver asked Chief Henderson and Clanton City Attorney John Hollis Jackson to research the problem and determine if other city ordinances can be used to give relief to the neighborhood residents.

Driver said he understood the State Health Department has been involved in the matter that has been ongoing for more than a year.

In other business the council passed a motion to seek bids on the construction of a city street new land purchased for a proposed fire station at the Peach Water Tank on Highway 145. It approved a motion for council member Ann Baker and city industrial development office secretary Susan Rickles to attend a community forestry meeting in Auburn July 24.

Penny Broussard, Chilton County Chamber of Commerce executive director, thanked the council for allowing the chamber to hold the fourth annual Peach Jam Jubilee in downtown Clanton.

“We had the biggest crowd in the history of the event,” she said, adding “we are already working on next year to make it even bigger and better.”
