Judith Bice, a stay at home mom, has created her own dream job at home. Bice is the mother of Heith, 3, and Hailey, 6. In the time that she has lived with Keith, her husband of 17 years, in Jemison for six years, she started a new hobby that slowly lead to her own home business.

“One year for Mother’s Day, I was given a sewing machine. I had never been really good at sewing, but I picked it up as a hobby and slowly began to create clothing for my kids,” she said.

Bice has worked through some major obstacles throughout her life due to her inability to hear. If talking to Bice one would probably never be able to tell that she is deaf. Over the years, she has perfected her ability to talk and read lips so conversation is easy for her.

She was born with a defect that didn’t show until she was in her mid-teen years. It was then that she gradually began losing her hearing that is until around four years ago when she lost all of her hearing.

“My teen years, I lost my hearing a little at a time and then just a few years ago all of a sudden I started losing my hearing quickly and almost went completely deaf,” she said. “It was in November of 2007 that I received a cochlear implant and that has given me back the amount of hearing that I have now.”

Although things are better for her now, she still has problems trying to deal with customers over the phone, which has been one of her only challenges to overcome with her home business.

“I do most of my transactions for HeHa’s Kloset online, when I do have to talk to somebody on the phone they are normally pretty understanding about my situation and I have not had a really difficult customer yet. Fortunately I have many family members and friends that have offered their services to me as help with having to deal with people over the phone,” she said.

Bice is proud of where HeHa’s Kloset stands right now, and is hoping that one day it will turn into a full boutique shop. Since it was her kids that started her hobby sewing, Bice named her shop after both her son and daughter taking the first two letters from each of their names.

In her home shopping center, you can find clothing for babies size three months all the way to 18-years-old, burp cloths and swimsuit cover-ups.

“I really enjoy my work, and I can’t think of anything else that I would rather spend my time doing. I get to stay at home with my children all while helping bring in money for the family. I can’t wait till the day that I am able to have my own shop and a place to work, but I know that is God’s grace and I am just going to have to be patient and wait for my opportunity.”
