On July 13, 1998, maybe because of excitement still surrounding the U.S. women’s soccer team’s gold medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, more than 1,500 girls participated in a United States Youth Soccer Association Region III Olympic Development Program at the University of Montevallo.
