If you have a motorcycle and $20, then you are fully equipped to participate in the Chilton County YMCA’s inaugural Strong Kids Ride for a Child next Saturday, July 19 from 9-2.

Anyone can participate in this event, which begins with registration at 7 a.m., followed by a complimentary biscuit breakfast. Riders will depart at 9 a.m. for Wind Creek in Alexander City, where they will enjoy a complimentary snack.

Upon arrival back at the Chilton County YMCA, participants will enjoy a chicken lunch and receive YMCA pins. The first 100 riders to register will get a free T-shirt.

The $20 donation goes to the YMCA Strong Kids campaign, which allows underprivileged children in Chilton County to get involved in the Y.

“I’m excited,” said YMCA Camp Director Joshlynn Allen. “I think it’s a good deal. You get a free breakfast, lunch, and a free pin.”

She added that riders may sponsor an underprivileged child of their choice. Also, churches or companies may sponsor a group of riders. Even those who don’t ride may sponsor someone.

About 40 percent of children who participate in YMCA programs receive assistance through Strong Kids. The YMCA Board conducts fundraising programs during certain times of the year for this purpose.

The program concentrates on the fundamentals of mental skills through activities such as skipping, hopscotch and jump rope. Children who benefit from Strong Kids participate in all activities at the Y, including after school tutoring.

Allen said she and her husband, John, are planning to ride.

“We are praying that people will come out and ride for a child,” she said. “If you don’t have a motorcycle to ride, then sponsor somebody.”

In case of rain, the event will be held July 20.
