Diverse sports action slated for this weekend

Just when one might think high school sports action would begin dying down for the summer, possibly the best local sports weekend of 2009 is coming up.

In addition to Maplesville competing in the state softball tournament Friday and, I hope, Saturday, Verbena will host a spring football jamboree on Friday and the first round of the annual East-West baseball tournament will be held Saturday at Jack Hayes Field.

Billingsley and Montevallo will join Verbena for the spring football game. These games are always interesting because they give you an idea of what to expect from teams in the fall, but squads are still far from finished products.

The East-West games are fun because we get to see the best local players matched up against the best from around the state.
