The only problem with college softball

Published Tuesday, June 2, 2009

I'm a huge softball fan—and if you watched the ending of the Alabama-Florida Women's College World Series game Sunday, then you know why—but I do have one complaint: The fences are too close to home plate.

Florida's Ali Gardiner ended Alabama's season with a two-out, one-strike grand slam to left field that caused jubilation from the Gators and heartbreak from the Crimson Tiders. The emotion is what softball is all about, but the ball off Gardiner's bat never should have gone over the fence.

When she hit it, I would have sworn it would be a pop up to shallow left field. The ball was not well hit. Alabama left fielder Whitney Larsen was at the fence for an eternity before the ball arrived.

Oh, well. At least it was an exciting ending.

Steven, as you I watched the game and just knew that BAMA had forced the extra game. I walked out of the room to feed the dog and returned to disappointment. I do not know about changing the distance from the plate to fence, but they should add some height to the fence. The fence hits most players at mid chest. Way to short, they should put the fence into play such as baseball.

I don't disagree that the left and right fields fences are too close. But if your reasoning is that Florida won because of the fences, then the same has to be said for Alabama's win to get into the semi-finals...Lunceford's homerun also went over the left fence and allowed Alabama to advance. And on that day, it seemed like a good thing, right?

I do not believe that I implied that any game was won or lost because of the fence placement. My comment was made after watching alot of homerun balls that had barely cleared what I preceive to be a low fence.

Why is it girls have to play softball anyway? Why can't they play baseball? Many of those girls are adept athletes who seem, at least to me, perfectly capable of hitting and pitching the small ball.

lol rek1138 thats because the boys would have a heart attack first time a GIRL out did them ....lol.... seriously ive played both... and was a dang good softball player(league champs all five yrs i played)... and i did well enough the boys always fought over which team i would play for when choosing up neighborhood teams. but i think the american people would have a flat out coniption fit first time a woman stepped up to bat or walked to a position on a mlb field....
