Auburn naming Todd no surprise

Published Friday, August 14, 2009

I'm not usually one to say "I told you so." But read paragraphs 3-5 of this column I wrote in March (either search our site for "Chizik needs to maintain momentum" or use the URL: http://www.clantonadvertiser.com/news/2009/mar/17/chizik-needs-maintain-positive-momentum/). Then read the comments after the column.

Well, as you might have guessed by now, Auburn on Thursday named Chris Todd its starting quarterback for the upcoming season. When you're wrong as many times as I am, it feels good to get one right every now and then.

Now we just have to wait and see whether Todd's faulty shoulder was his only problem last season!

You did. Hopefully he's improved much since last year. Also saw where Kodi was moved to slot receiver.

Doesn't matter, they'll be lucky to have one or two conference wins, at most.

Hey Donnyo - still pulling for AU I see.

Yeah, Todd was the obvious choice. Kodi Burns would have made a solid QB under the old run it up the middle system but it was clear he didn't have the arm or the accuracy to play in any kind of a spread offense. Todd, while horrible last year, is still an affective, long strike, spread QB. With the internal implosion of Auburn's offensive coaching staff last year his efforts were all but sabotaged by feuding coaching ideologies. Under a unified offensive system he should be much, much better and with many of the SEC's defenses still playing down-and-distance defense he might be able to open up a long range passing game, something most SEC teams are weak defending against.

Regardless of what some faux-fans are imagining or hoping for, Auburn should be competitive right out of the gate. They've always seemed to thrive under low expectations so who knows, it could be a better season than anyone expected.

    Sorry, REK...just being realistic.
I would be ecstatic if they won 6 games.

I expect no less that 7 wins this year. The schedule is easy enough for that.
