It's a little too early for that

Published Wednesday, December 3, 2008

An Alabama county has added a paid holiday in honor of President-Elect Barack Obama.

According to The Birmingham News, Perry County has declared the second Monday in November "The Barack Obama Day." On this day, county offices will close and workers will get a paid holiday. Perry County Commissioner Albert Turner Jr., the sponsor of the act, said he has mailed copies of the resolution to Obama and his transition team. In the general election, almost 73 percent of the county's electorate voted for Obama.

I think this move is ridiculous. It's one thing to honor a president because he has helped the country so much, but Obama hasn't even been sworn into office yet. Why should we make a holiday for someone who hasn't even done anything yet. All Obama has done is to be elected President. He is the first African-American president to be elected to the presidency, and that is significant. However, we don't know whether he will be the best president or the worst president. I think we need to hold off on creating these kinds holidays until we determine just what kind of a leader he is going to be.

Actually, why should we give Obama a holiday all of his own? Don't we already have Presidents Day, a day when we honor all presidents?

We could always celebrate George W. Bush Is Out of Office Day. Yeah, a little ridiculous to be sure. The truth is, for many, the issue has already been settled - Barrack Obama is America's greatest president of all time (have actually heard that said). Ridiculous.

Somehow this just doesn't surprise me. I'm sure that Larry Langford would love to have his trial moved to Perry County. He would probably be found not guilty and be honored by having an entire month-long holiday in his name. Lord have mercy.

OMG! Imagine "what if" Hillary had won the presidential election! I think someone's been hit too hard in the head over there in Perry County.

MY GOODNESS--- What is the world coming too? We can't give honor to God in schools and in many public places but before Obama has even taken office a good ol' Alabama county is the first to honor him with a paid holiday. This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of! Each year, we face the task of keeping Christmas as we know it-- in honor of the greatest KING ever born, yet we now have a Barack Obama day in Perry county. Lord help us all!

Why should this county make that a PAID holiday? We already have President's Day.
