Excuse me, but am I the only one who thinks $22,201.24 is an astronomical amount for the county to be paying per month for medical care for inmates? Does the county jail have an in-house medical clinic with a full-time physician and dentist or is the medical care contracted out to private practitioners? How many inmates are incarcerated in the jail? It seems they would all have to be seeing a doctor at least once a month to justify paying that much money to a contract company. If the inmates are being sent out for care, the county is also incurring the expense of transportation. What a drain on the county!
I worked for the first company that the state prison system contracted medical and dental care with. I can tell you these companies are in the business to make a sizable profit, and they do. Having worked in the prisons, I can tell you firsthand, most of the inmates never bother to get regular medical or dental care before they are incarcerated. However, when they get incarcerated, they want to milk the system for all of the medical and dental care they can get. They also use any excuse they can just to get out of the prison (jail) population for a while. Someone mentioned, what if they break a leg or get injured? Most of the injuries are self inflicted or happened because they got into an altercation with another inmate. I have had to treat death row inmates and I have no sympathy for any of them.
Mr. Graves, I agree with you 100% on the hangings. Better yet, why not adopt some of the punishment of other countries, like the firing squad.

My family moved to Chilton County (Jemison) 43 years ago from Birmingham. I had already finished school and never lived here. However, two of my sisters did live here and go to school here. What culture shock! We never heard about racial problems in Chilton County. Even though we did know of a dentist in Clanton who still made some of his patients "of color" come in a different door. Thank goodness those times no longer exist.
The worst thing we heard was "be careful if you go to Clanton of Friday or Saturday night because the river rats come to town then, ie. the Bakers and the Castleberrys. I would come to visit on the weekends and take my middle sister to Barrons on Friday nights and be scared to death that we might encounter some incident involving "those people". We never did.
I moved here a little over a year ago, from Montgomery,to care for my parents. My father has since had a stroke and is paralyzed. He is now in a nursing home in Prattville. My mother passed away five months ago. My parents loved their home here in Jemison. Therefore, I am staying here taking care of it in hopes that I can bring my father home again. I will say, I was never afraid to be here until about a week ago when I started reading some of the comments that have posted on this site. I certianly do not feel quite a safe.
A lot has changed in 43 years and quite a bit remains the same. Politically speaking, especially. It still seems that those who have the most money, property, etc. also have the most influence. People of this county must get more involved. If you don't like the way things are being run change it. The mayors, councilmen, commisioners, sheriff, and legislators are all elected officals, elected by the people. Instead of lambasting everyone on a forum such as this, attend the commissioners meetings and the council meetings, call the mayors offices, and write and call you legislator. Let your voices be heard somewhere other than posting comments online at the Advertiser. I doubt if any of your officals even read these comments. Show up at the meetings. There's strength in numbers.
ATC1962, well written.

Mr. Graves, I'm sure the families who have lost their loved ones, due to the swine flu, do not find it as amusing as you do. My mother always told us, "less said, less mended". A lot of you would be better off if you would try to remember that.

Just a reminder, this article is about the cost of medical treatment for inmates. Can Mr. Caton or anyone else answer my questions? How many inmates are in the jail? How many times a month are inmates being treated by either a private physician, dentist, or in the emergency room? Is Southern Health Partners providing the care or are they paid the lump sum of $22,201.14 monthly and they pay the physicians like an insurance company would. In other words, they get $22,201.14 whether they treat no inmates or all of the inmates.
On Inmate medical costs could rise
