The response reminds me of an old song "Another Brick in the Wall", by Pink Floyd, "We don't need no education". Maybe many people aren't aware of what is available, and that it is inexpensive.
Perhaps some of the folks complaining in these threads that local government needs to create more jobs and faster and that it is too far to go to Prattville or Alabaster for employment might consider availing themselves to these local services and prepare for a job. However, those classes might cut into their pitching and moaning time.
Fairygrandmother - I thought I'd check back - HOPING to see different results since I first posted. I look forward to the opportunity to take some of these classes. Someone I respect once told me that "your education is the only thing you earn and cannot lose". I don't know who said it originally, but it has always stuck with me - especially when I was in college full-time, working full-time, and was exhausted and wanted to give up.
I also agree with your comments about job "seekers" who are unwilling to travel. I've had worse commutes than to either Montgomery or B'ham.
I would love to go take some of my class at Jeff State but until they offer more than just freshman cores I will have to continue to go to the hoover campus.
Well, since I already have senior standing toward my BS in accounting, I can't use them now, but if I was just starting out, I would be. I started taking college courses at George Wallace Extension in Clanton the summer after I graduated from high school back in ....well - a long time ago. I'm taking classed at Athens State online and it's really great....difficult, but great, because it's the first opportunity I've had, after all these years, to finish what I wanted to do a long time ago. I'm gonna owe a small fortune in student loans, but, I will, finally, get to pat myself on the back and maybe- just maybe- something I've worked hard for might pay off................we'll see.

I would love to see UM or Jeff State become affiliated with an institution like Berklee's school of Music.

I think the chance to take the classes locally is fantastic.
