Money is not a cure-all for everything. Lower taxes are certainly an incentive for living in the South.

It's not a cure-all, but it sure does help.

Are you kidding! I moved here because I heard that the cost of living was less. What a joke! It has cost me more to live here then it did in Florida, Ohio or Maryland! The only thing lower is property taxes.

Taxes should be less here because wages are less here.

I don't know when Shelby lived in Florida, but it sure wasn't in the last few years. Fl doesn't have an income tax, but it has very high property taxes and "fees" that most people never knew existed. As we all know "fees" are not calculated as taxes and therefore not deductable and don't show up on state tax comparison charts. Homeowner insurance is off the charts, if you can get it, and if you have a policy the deductables are unblievable. We moved back here a few years ago, and are way better off than we were the last few years we lived in FL. I LOVE ALABAMA , AND CLANTON IS HOME. I still have several relatives there and every one of them wish they were here.

This is true, southernpride. Too many people seem to have bought in to the idea that governments are floating these days; that being that all money belongs to the government instead of the people who earned it.

Southernpride, to add to your arguement, the Washington DC school system spends the most per student but has the among the lowest standardized test scores in the nation. Maximum input, minimum benefit.

shelby, I agree partly. I live in two different states. Al and Nv. Nevada is less expensive to live in. Last year when gas prices were driven up in the southeast, due to a storm, they were almost $1.00 per gallon less in Nevada. Milk is less expensive. Boat registration is less in Nevada. Yet car taxes are higher and you have to have a smog test before you can buy a tag. You must also SHOW proof of insurance. There is more competition as far as grocery stores go. Wal-Mart is one of the most expensive places to buy groceries in Nevada, quality and variety are almost non-existent at Wally World in Vegas. The local banks don't have overdraft fees, or checking fees. Banks are open until 7pm 7 days a week.
Now, Alabama has, grass, trees, bugs, mosquitos, fire ants, flies, gnats, but is overall more friendly in mass public places. One on one people are the same. But it does cost more to live in Clanton than Vegas.

I thought she said it was less expensive to live in FL, OH, and MD, which is extremely hard to believe. That hasn't been my experience in those states. I really would prefer that the word not get out, though, about our lower taxes as we already have too many people here.

It must have been the wealth envy crowd that voted that it is a "BAD" thing that our taxes are lower than surrounding states.
