Should swimming continue to be allowed at Higgins Ferry Park, even though there is no lifeguard on duty?

People can, and will swim anywhere along the river. They are going to swim at their own risk and hopefully be smart enough to put flotation devices on their kids and themselves where currents are uncertain or water is over their heads.

Is this not a question for the parents of the kids swimming? If it is an adult, do they not have the mental capacity to make their own decision?

What's going to happen when a boater who is trying to trailer their boat happens to hit a swimmer, (who cannot read english or speak it) that is out of the swim area? Who is going to be sued (and it will happen eventually, hopefully not!) when someone is hurt, or even drowns, the county? There is no lifeguard there (remember the area is roped off for swimmers). Swimmers produce no revenue for the county or state, boat tags, and fishing liscense are what fund this area not swimmers. I've been there to go boating and couldn't park there for all the swimmers vehicles. Just my 2 cents in here.

BEWARE! another trick question. This should be at our own risk and I just hope that when the decision is made if you are an adult you have the Sense to know what you are doing. Don't let peole make all our decisions for us. another way of dabble in our rights issues. If you don't put life saving devises on your children and they drown isn't that punishment enough?

I agree with Renee about the rights issue. Kids have been swimming at Higgins Ferry since way before I did. I remember when part of the old ferry was there and we used it to jump off of. (not head first of course) There have always been discussions about whether to close it or not. Let the kids and their parents have some fun. I'm sure their were signs, way back then, but I don't remember seeing them. We just knew not to go where the boats were.

shak,
I would hate to think that tax revenue earning activities would somehow take priority over those that children get to enjoy. I grew up swimming in Mitchell Lake, a lot of times at Higgins Ferry. Lots of great memories on the river!
