NO, they should not be allowed to participate in anything just like the student that is suspended out of school. In school suspension is not enough punishment for some of these students. I do agree it should only be used for true discipline problems. Not just as a babysitter for the teachers.

I agree with the person above - however, let's tell the truth where it is also - teachers can't teach when children are disrupting the classroom - PERIOD - ISS or regular suspension should be used when everything else has failed - and not just as a babysitter for the parents! These students shouldn't be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities when they have been in ISS or suspended. They need to learn about consequences and accountability.

After teaching in Indiana & Kentucky, I moved back to Alabama. Teaching was a wonderful experience until I taught in the Chilton County and Montgomery County Systems during which time I was thrown against a wall by a student, a parent threatened my life and if a fight broke out I did not see it unless it was at my feet because of fear of bodily harm. It is apparent this Board has elected to place activities/football ahead of teaching respect and proper behavior to the students who disrupt the classrooms. It is a shame that so much of the teachers' time must be spent on behavior problems. This takes time away from the students who really want to learn. In my years of teaching, I can remember the names of the students who disrupted the classrooms but not the good students' name because I spent less time with them. Only in Alabama will you find football ahead of learning. Mr. Moore stating, "it is not fair" upsets me. What about the wonderful students who works hard, and see the students who caused problems not in ISS but out on the football field or basketball court? The good students need to be considered on what is not fair. Mr. Moore still has the coaching fever in him.

Extracurricular activities in these parts usually involves sports. I feel the emphasis should be placed on education instead of sports, etc. The childs education, not sports, will determine whether he/she becomes a success. Only a select few young folks ever make it into professional sports (Major League Baseball, National Football League or National Basketball Assoc, etc.) and even some of those careers are short lived, whereas those who enter the work force and have a decent education will carry what they learned with them the rest of their lives. I say that those suspended students "SHOULD NOT" be allowed to participate in any kind of activity, PERIOD.

This comes as no surprise to me. As a parent of students in this system I have sat back and watched as "problem" students get pushed ahead of other well deserving students in regards to sports. It's just another example of how corrupt our system is. The real problem is that we continue to allow this to happen.

For a student to have in-school suspension then there has to be a low serverity to the rule that was broken. I am a parent with 5 children within the system and I support the new rule. I am proud to have been a student in Chilton County and I support the leaders of our school system. I personally know if a child is in seriuos trouble in some schools here they will be sent home thus not allowed to play sports, band, or etc.
