What is Board’s position on Obama's address?
Published Friday, September 4, 2009
Dear Editor,
I have tried all morning long to reach the Chilton County Board of Education to find out the “official” position of the Board regarding Tuesday’s “Presidential Address to Students.”
At least a half dozen times I have been sent to voicemail. When I finally did reach a real, live person, that individual told me they would have to refer me to the Superintendent’s Office. Yep, you got it, back to voicemail.
As a taxpayer, I believe I have the right to be able to reach this office to obtain from the horse’s mouth a true stance on this issue, as I care what my grandchildren are exposed to. I’ll tell you what this taxpayer’s opinion is: Don’t waste students’ valuable time on such garbage!
This total and blatant abuse of power by a sitting President to further a radical agenda in an attempt to indoctrinate young minds (What can you do to help the president?) is hideously unconscionable!
Simply asked, “Mr. Superintendent, what is the Board’s position on this issue?”
– John D. Bailey, Thorsby

Apparently Mr. Bailey bases his opinions solely on partisan lies from right-wing nuts.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/...
The Board has made his speech optional, but I wish that they could force every single student AND their parents to sit down and watch it so they can see the REAL President Barack Obama and not the character the wingnuts like to falsely paint him as for their own partisan political reasons. Maybe then they'd ALL learn a valuable lesson about respect for our democratic process.
What is Obama's "radical agenda" that he'll be indoctrinating our young people's minds with? A message that will "challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning." Wow, how RADICAL!
Seriously, what is wrong with you people? Have you lost all common sense, decency and respect? You must know that this kind of nonsense along with the Birthers, Deathers, Tenthers and the rest of the lunatic fringe is really destroying the GOP. Moderates and independent free-thinkers are laughing at you because we base our opinions on facts and not the kind of ridiculous scare tactics that people like Mr. Bailey buy hook-line-and-sinker with no critical thought whatsoever. So, keep it up if you just HAVE to have someone to hate and we'll see ya in 2010.

Yes. Forcing people to watch a speech by the political leader of our country-how democratic.

AllSeeingEye (anonymous)- no, just a very concerned grandparent who sees through the radical left wing agenda and one who is not blinded by "the hopey-changey" muck that YOU have taken in "hook, line & sinker!" (sorry, can't pass it up a little bit of plagarism - "so how's that hopey-changey stuff workin' out for you now?") And having served in the military for 33+ years, I have the utmost respect for our democratic process so that folks like you have the right and opportunity to express their opinion, whether it be in agreement with me or not. You have every right in the world to "laugh at me" and call me whatever you wish, it's water of a ducks back. I don't compromise on my beliefs and waffle from day to day like you "independent free-thinkers". And I'll be more than happy to "see ya in 2010." PS. Why don't you sign your name or are you scared of a "backlash"?

RktScience - I was simply making a point that when they learn the TRUE content of Obama's speech to students, then the wingnuts might finally accept that our president is NOT an evil person out to "indoctrinate' our youth and give him some respect for once. Of course I do not support forcing anyone to watch anything that they don't want to see, but obviously the nuance of my argument went right over your head.
2rightwingers - How about offering proof of your baseless accusation. If you are the one who wrote this letter, then you claim that this is a "total and blatant abuse of power by a sitting President to further a radical agenda in an attempt to indoctrinate young minds." I challenge you to PROVE IT! It's really easy to make such ridiculous accusations, but you have zero evidence or facts on your side.
Anyone who takes the time to find the facts can see that this "garbage" speech is simply about our president encouraging students to work hard and stay in school, but there's always wingnuts like Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh who are willing to lie about anything and everything Obama does, and you right-wingers eat it all up with no questions asked. I implore you to get the facts before forming your opinions for a change rather than accepting whatever fits into your preconceived beliefs. That means turning the TV channel OFF of Faux News!
You know what's really "hideously unconscionable?" That people think it's perfectly okay to spread vicious and hateful lies about OUR president just because of partisan politics or they can't stand having a black family in the White House. A couple of years ago we were told that anyone who opposes the president during a time of war is a traitor in league with terrorists. Now, we have a new president who has been in office less than 8 months who is already being objected to the most disgusting and hateful bunch of lies and propaganda EVER. Is that the America you fought for with your many years of military service? I don't think so.
Do you really want to know how the hope and change is going? It's pretty darn good, thank you! I know that facts don't matter to you people, but according to this website Obama has already kept 41 promises, compromised on 11, and 91 are in the works. What reality are you living in anyway?

Who I am is unimportant. I know you'd like to make this personal, but it's not about you or me - it's about the TRUTH!

Eye,
I don't think seeing the "true" text of his speech would make many who don't want their children watching change their mind. The simple truth of the matter is that people just don't like the guy, don't like his ideas and what he stands for and many simply don't trust him.
As far as his keeping his campaign promises, I think that's one of the problems many folks around here have with Obama. His idea of the direction our country should take differ greatly from the direction most people around here want to it to go.
What Obama and the people he surrounds himself with don't understand is that our nation is not homogenous. It's made up of sections and states, each with its own wants needs and desires. In short, what's good for folks in Chicago ain't exactly what's good for folks in Alabama. Unfortunately, the policies of a large, centralized government must apply to all regions regardless of whether those policies are in the interest of the people in those regions. That's why it's not a good idea to concentrate so much power in Washington.
People around here also don't like the idea of being controlled by a faceless bureaucracy, and Obama and his handlers are control freaks. They want the government to dictate how we live our lives, from the light bulbs we screw into our sockets to the food we put into our stomachs.
Whay would you think that they would want someone whose ideas and values run so counter to thier own speaking to their children, no matter what the guy has to say?

RktScience - You made my point for me, thanks. It's not about the speech it's about the man himself and that's just wrong when the POTUS is simply offering an inspirational message that school children SHOULD hear. From your other statements it's obvious you've been misinformed about our president. His ideas and values do NOT run counter to any reasonable person who has seen our country driven off the rails into a ditch by the previous administration. He offers common sense solutions to our everyday problems such as health care reform, when the previous admin just wanted to start wars and give more money to their rich friends. Which one is on your side again?
I'd like for you to offer proof of your allegation that Obama is a "control freak" who wants to "dictate how we live our lives." This is complete nonsense and you know it, but that's all your side has is these kind of baseless accusations. Obama ran for president and got elected so he can control us? Give me a break. Why can't you people accept that a politician might actually have good intentions for once? Because that would mean admitting you are all wrong and that will NEVER happen.
I still have hope that one day you right-wingers will get your head out of the sand and realize that Obama and Dems are not your enemy, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. After all, you can't reason with unreasonable people.

AllSeeingEye (One or Both Obviously Closed) – As a parent Mr. Obama has every right in the world to address HIS children's class, but not everyone's class. But if you think such a “speech”, at a time when his popularity and his programs are melting like a cheap candle, was going to be to tell students nationwide to “stay in school, study hard, and stick with the program,” then you are a lot more naïve than I assumed. If it weren't for us right “wing-nuts” asking some questions and criticizing such a decision which I'm sure was influenced by some of his "stellar" advisors, there's no telling what the “subject matter” might/could have been. There was initially absolutely no intent or thought from the Obama administration or DOE of publishing any content of the “speech” until the firestorm erupted. When the US Department of Education sends out in the blind – totally without notice - a “lesson plan” for a nationally telecast/streamed presidential address to students that has in it questions like “what does the president do to inspire you?” and “what can you do to help the president?”, I'm not the only “Un-American, right wing extremist” that has problems with it. Oh, and where's that “transparency” he “promised” and talked so much about. I'm surprised he hasn't named a “Transparency Czar” yet or has he? I lost count after it passed 25 and brother does he have some "really fine" folks advising him. The caliber of the "advisors" he has surrounded himself with speaks volumes in itself!!
I did find something that we can agree on though. You're absolutely correct – it's not about you or me. It is about something far greater than two individuals who share directly opposing views – and it isn't your reference to “truth”. It's about the direction of this great nation, and we both want the very same thing - freedom and prosperity for our families, our kids and grandkids. It's the path that we totally disagree upon. Liberals want to be spoon fed while us “wingnuts” want to pick up the spoon and feed ourselves.
Regarding one of your comments - I don't - in any way, shape, or form - want to make this a personal battle one iota.
And regarding another of your comments - you were/are so predictable, just a little quicker on the draw than I anticipated, although I did anticipate that it would come. You pulled out the ole liberalistic race card as is always the case with you liberals when criticism of the Messiah surfaces. “That dawg don't hunt” with me as I didn't reach the level I did by being a racist. In regard to the the right wing talking heads - I'm not a big fan of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh either as they tend to take it over the top. However, you yourself might want to turn off MSNBC and the Communist News Network (both bottom feeders) and get over their and your pie in the sky as they take it further over the top than Beck or Limbaugh ever thought of doing.

2rightwingers - You've still yet to prove that your erroneous claim that Obama's speech was a "total and blatant abuse of power by a sitting President to further a radical agenda in an attempt to indoctrinate young minds." I'll be waiting forever because you are WRONG!
Did you even bat an eyelash over Bush's "Czars"? Nope. Why are you changing the subject to Czars? Because you can't prove any of your false claims about Obama, that's why. All the wingnuts have to use against him is guilt-by-association, lies and propaganda. If you have legitimate criticisms of his policies, fine, but enough already with the politics of personal destruction! It didn't work for you in '08 did it? Then learn your lesson!
Here is the text of President Obama's speech to school children (for those interested in the truth)
http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources...
Did you even bother to read the text of the speech that was released in advance yesterday? I doubt it because your mind is already made up and you'll never change regardless of the facts. The speech was pre-written and unedited after this 'controversy.' The only change was the lesson plan with the part for students to tell "what they can do to help the president" was removed due to complaints. This is the one part that had the wingers in an uproar but they fail to admit the context in which that question is asked. The speech WAS just about staying in school and working hard regardless of the idiotic conspiracy theories from people like you. There was no mention of any policies or initiatives other than EDUCATION. In that context, asking what students can do to help the president reach educational goals is perfectly okay. Any reasonable person would agree, but there's a huge lack of any reasoning going on these days from those on the right. They prefer to base their opinions on lies and disinformation with zero critical thinking, and that is just not right! Actually, it's a mental phenomenon called "motivated reasoning" where they only believe whatever feeds their preconceived ideas. Look into it.
The reason I brought up race is obvious. There is no other explanation for the irrational hatred people show toward Obama after only 8 months in office. Seriously, I want to know: What has he done as president that's been so bad for our country? I challenge you to name just one thing that proves he is a socialist/communist/fascist/racist/whatever. If you people are going to make such outrageous claims then the burden of proof is on YOU. The reality is that you can't prove any of it because those claims are simply false. Therefore, hatred of Obama is either because people have been misinformed or their opinion is based on nothing but partisan politics or they are racist. It's a simple as that.

Eye,
I thought your point was that opposition to Obama's speech was based purely on party politics and race. I don't think anyone has denied that their problem is having their children FORCED to watch the speech of THIS president. The disagreement comes over the motivation for their opposition. You contend parents don't want their children to watch because the parents are simple-minded politcally partisan morons-I think that was the word you used. I say the parents of these children view Obama's ideas and agenda as so counter to their own that they simply don't want their children, as a captive audience, to be exposed to the guy and to the teaching material which will correspond to the speech.
Please explain the "common sense" behind such initiatives as 1) health-care reform, 2) cap and trade, and 3) government takeover of GM, 4) cash for clunkers. It doesn't take much reasoned thought to discover that none of these make much economic sense. It's also pretty evident that they, along with many other of Obama's policy agendas run counter to the capitalist ideas which have underpinned our economy for nearly two and quarter centuries.
How does Obama want to control our lives? He would like to use the power of the Executive Branch to limit compensation for our labor, the fees doctors can charge for their services, the sort of lightbulbs with which we light our homes, the sort of cars we drive, and the sort of medical care and procedures we have access to. Of course, it's all for our own good, so it must be ok, right?

More baseless accusations with ZERO proof to back up your delusional opinions. Amazingly you people continue to deny the subject matter of Obama's speech and focus on propaganda and lies being spread about our president. Unbelievable. I'm done trying to reason with unreasonable people. Keep on hating Obama if it makes you feel better, I really don't care.

Eye (I almost put in there "BlindEye" again)- you ask for proof - how can "proof" be given when we'll never know what was in the "original version" of Dear Leaders message since there was no intent to publish it before the speech was given. The only thing that could be publically seen was the indoctinal laced "lesson plan" thus the great suspicion of what the original content was to be. Only after so much xxxx was raised did the lesson plan get modified and the "non-political" version of the "address" conveniently appear. However, the original lesson plan certainly gave ample view into their thought pattern (closely review the original wording my friend), and you can bet your sweet bippy that the Obama administration doesn't do ANYTHING without a political motive!! You want proof of how political motive and political indoctrination of young minds works - look no further back in history than the 20th Century and focus on Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Idi Amin and the like. And no Eye, I'm not saying that Obama is in the same league as these criminals, and I'm certainly not comparing him to them either. I am saying that he is a master orator who knows how to manipulate and indoctrinate. He full well knows that much of his support originally came from YOUTH who fell hook, line and sinker for his cult persona. As this persona is starting to unravel as people start seeing the error of their ways, so as to hopefully maintain for the future, he has to "reach out" now to that core of youth since those high school sophomores, juniors and seniors will be voting in Nov 2012. No time like the present to push those buttons and leave that "seed", is there? Of course they don't see it as being indoctinated/manipulated, but us "dillusional wingnuts" see right through it!! But I'm sure that you just see it as good ole Prez talking sensibly to today's youth and nothing more.
As for your comment to Science (and I'm pretty sure myself as well) about "hating" Obama - far cry from it my friend - but he does indeed scare the daylights out of me especially from a constitutional, national financial and national security standpoint! All that for another time though.

Seriously Eye, please pick one of the above policies and present a logical, well-reasoned argument as to how and why it is good for America and how it fits into our capitalist economic system. I'd be interested in debating any one of those with you.
Also, I'd be interested to know why someone who claims not to be a socialist insists on appointing, as high level advisors Van Jones, Adolfo Carrion and other admitted marxists and collectivists.
Please enlighten me.
Posted by getbizi (anonymous) on September 9, 2009 at 11 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Very good points. Let's not forget that Obama wants to add to our bulging deficit by "fixing" a healthcare system that at best needs a LITTLE fine tuning, not a trillion dollar makeover.
Posted by RktScience (anonymous) on September 9, 2009 at 11:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)
And according to him, he'll manage to drive down costs while increasing demand without rationing care. Of course this is in direct contradiction to the most basic law of economic science, but what are scientific laws to the well-meaning collectivist, right?

So, there was an "original" version of Obama's speech? LOL! You've got to be kidding me.... Everything's always a conspiracy theory with you people. Get back to me when you accept reality.
I don't debate with people who ignore facts and base their opinions on lies and propaganda. Been down that road here before, and it is pointless.
You people are the one making outrageous claims about our president so therefore the burden of proof is on YOU. However, none of you can back up any of your arguments with any facts whatsoever. What does that tell you? Just like Palin, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Malkin, Bachmann and the other idiotic wingnuts, you're all full of IT, that's what. For once just ask yourself: Why does my side constantly make stuff up? The answer is obvious - because they're wrong.

That sounds like a bit of a cop out to me, Eye. I'm not asking you to debate me on Obama's faults, affiliations or ideology just his policy initiatives and their potential cost and benefits to our country. You said that any rational person could see that his ideas are common sense solutions to problems. If that's the case it shouldn't be any trouble for you to make a case for them and shoot down any argument or concen I might raise against them. You bring your facts, I'll bring mine and we'll see what happens. Prove to me that Obama and his compatriots are leading our country in the right direction.

Rkt - Until you prove your allegation that Obama is a "control freak" who wants to "dictate how we live our lives" there is no need to debate anything with you. The only thing that you've proved is that your opinions are irrational and delusional and now you want to change the subject and have a debate? Sure. You obviously just want to play games and I refuse to waste my time with that kind of nonsense.
Again, it is impossible to reason with unreasonable people. Just see people like getbizi for example. He thinks that he's being clever by copying and pasting already discredited LIES and propaganda about health care reform. Anyone can go get the truth from a variety of credible fact checking websites, but wingnuts like you and him will believe whatever feeds your preconceived belief that anything and everything liberals or Obama does is bad with no critical thinking whatsoever.
2rightwingers is another prime example of these kind of irrational opinions. To him/her anyone who supports the president is somehow worshiping a "Messiah" or a "Great Leader." They go on and on about how Obama is doing the exact same thing as Hitler and other horrible dictators while offering zero evidence and then proclaiming that they're somehow NOT comparing him to Hitler. How hypocritical can you get? When challenged on their insane assertions such as Obama wanting to "indoctrinate" children with a "radical agenda" he can provide zero facts to back up this nonsense, and when all evidence points to it just being a speech to encourage kids to stay in school and work hard, they ignore this and keep on demanding it was originally some kind of sinister plot.
There is no need to debate with people like this. Their mind is already made up and conclusions are formed in some kind of alternate reality where only reporting by right-wing sources is accepted as truth regardless of the actual facts. You've all been duped and look like total fools for believing such nonsense, but keep it up. This is why Dems won in '08 and it's why we'll win in '10.
So long, I'm done here. Go ahead and get in your petty last words and hate-filled attacks with more lies about our president. It only shows your true colors, so have at it.

This is for you getbizi - Stop trying to mislead people with discredited lies.
The truth can be found at the following link and if you had even bothered to Google your email chain letter propaganda you'd know most of them are completely false, so much so that many are rated as "Pants on fire!" LOL! Better get an extinguisher...

I've been there already. MOST have some truth to them and can't be dismissed if there is even an ounce of truth.
Posted by AllSeeingEye (anonymous) on September 10, 2009 at 2:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)
getbizi - Most have "some truth to them?" Then PROVE IT! Even if just one has some truth to it, does that make it okay to post all of the other ones that are blatant lies? You'll never admit that you got caught trying to spread lies about health care reform, therefore, in my opinion, YOU are the radical!
Despite your pitiful attempt to spin the fact that you just got caught spreading propaganda, MOST of the points you copied and pasted have indeed been proven as FALSE. It amazes me that people like you will continue to lie about this stuff even when the truth is readily available for anyone with internet access.
Although the PolitiFact article is incomplete for some reason, the following link has a line-by-line rebuttal of the complete false email propaganda that you are guilty of trying to spread as if it's a fair representation of the House health care reform bill:
http://edlabor.house.gov/blog/2009/08/he...
But wait, there's more. EVERY item from that lie-filled email misrepresents the actual language of the bill.
http://www.reasic.org/2009/08/debunking-...
If you're interested in actually reading H.R. 3200 (instead of basing your opinions on wingnut lies) you can do so at this link:
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h32...
Those facts are pesky things aren't they? That chain email, which you uncritically assume is the truth, was obviously written to attempt to scare people about health care reform by lying about the legislation. Why do you think they have to lie about it instead of finding legitimate criticisms? Because they know that they are wrong to oppose it and have ZERO legitimate criticisms, that's why.
