More robbery charges against Verbena teen

Published Wednesday, September 2, 2009

The Verbena teenager arrested twice already for allegedly burglarizing a Clanton business and robbing a Verbena store will face charges in connection with a third crime.

Timothy Jake Wells Jr., 19, will be charged with robbery and theft of property for the mid-July hold-up of a gas station off Interstate 65, according to Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell.

Chilton County sheriff’s deputies arrested Wells on Tuesday evening, about 10 hours after the Ye Old General Store was robbed. The store is located at the corner of county roads 59 and 24.

Stilwell said Wells was already a person of interest in the Shell station robbery.

Evidence recovered Tuesday by the sheriff’s office, including a shotgun and clothes, gave detectives reason to charge Wells with the Clanton robbery.

“Some information and property was found that tied him to that robbery,” Stilwell said.

A second man, Tommy J. Knight, 18, of Clanton, has also been arrested and charged with robbery and theft of property in connection with the Shell station robbery.

Wells was first arrested July 1 after apparently trying to steal a 4-wheeler from Action Motorsports in Clanton, Stilwell said.

That morning, Clanton police arrested Wells and charged him with burglary and theft of property. He has been out on bond since.

Two weeks later, the Sunny Shell Station was robbed around 3:45 a.m. A man carrying a shotgun and wearing a hood and mask entered the store and demanded money from the cashier.

Fast forward to Tuesday, when Wells allegedly entered the Verbena store armed with a shotgun and wearing a blue hood. After demanding money from the clerk, he fled in a brown Honda Accord with about $200, according to the sheriff’s office.

Wells lives within two miles of the store, and Chief Deputy Shane Mayfield said Tuesday that evidence links him to the robbery.

Clanton detectives don’t believe Wells is involved in any more of the robberies that have occurred near the Interstate in recent weeks.

Stilwell said the charges are the result of good teamwork between Clanton police and the sheriff’s office.

“We are a small county. All our departments are way too small for what we have to do,” said Stilwell. “The sheriff’s office did a wonderful job. We all worked together to make this happen.”

Anyone with information should call Clanton police at 755-1194.

Nail his butt to the wall. I had property stolen from my residence in Verbena 2 years ago and this kid might have done that too. He obviously has no respect for the law or others. Try him as an adult and lock him up for 10-15. Sunny Crocket once said that the second these kids pick up a gun they become men. No exception here. Life ain't no video game, put the screws to him.

I am sure these acts can be blamed on growth in the county. Yes I am being fececious.

It's very possible that it could be, southernpride.

This poor young man. All he needs is a mentor to guide him on the right path. He may be missing a father figure in his life or he is simply acting out for the attention. Whichever the case maybe, once he gets to prison he will get a lot of the much needed attention and some of the guidence he needs. One day he will return to society a changed person.

gonefishen, are you serious or are you being facetious? He needs a mentor all right!

He did the crimes, now he must do the time.

Broken home, abuse, neglect, video games, movies, TV, where they live, global warming, not going to church, the list goes on, is NO excuse for any crime, anytime, period! Until everyone excepts that THEY are responsible for their own action, no other reasons, then real justice can be served.

To AZSneed, those reasons can be excuses, you dont know what these young men have been through! I know Tommy J Knight really well and he hasnt had a father figure around for awhile and it has not been easy in life for him. I agree that he shouldn't have done it but that doesn't mean you should talk about these young men without knowing what they have been through. Oh, and to SECorBust, just because your house got broken into doesn't automatically mean these boys done it, there are a ton of burglers in these county!!

I also know the Knight boy and he has not had a father figure but as I see it he is following in his fathers foot steps. You would think after all he has seen he would want to be better than his father!

well I am the Knight boys sister, and me and my mother are gonna do all we can to stop him from following in my fathers foot steps. So don't worry about my brother. That goes for everyone. He is a good boy,he is always there for his family, i know that may be hard for some of you people to believe but he CAN change!!!! I know him best!

and plus he turned himself in, he didn't run like most criminals would. He knew he did wrong

i know both the people involved and like idntjudge said knight is a good guy and so is wells they just have made a few bad choices and are dealing with the consequences of their actions...and people can change given the right circumstances...and with the whole parents thing i don't beleive the parent has anything to do with it..my dad has been in and out of prison my whole life and i have turned out fine..it just depends on the person and what they want to do with their life!!

Wow... someone needs to go back to English class instead of hanging out with a loser.

I agree people can change, but so far it doesn't seem that these young men care to. Take responsibility for your own actions, grow up, and earn a living WORKING like the majority of us do. Don't blame your bad home life for the way you are. There are many people who grew up in bad homes and don't go around stealing, etc because daddy wasn't there.

Yes, these poor young men have made some bad choices and now they must answer for those choices.
A scene from the movie " Casino Royale" comes to mind. All that is needed is a chair and a length of rope. A perfect spot for this educational experience would be in the sqaure across from the court house.

Yall just need to shut your blame mouths, dont worry about no english class or nothing, I am Jays Sister and i am proud of it, dont worry about if he is a thug or not, that is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!!!!! You dont know crap about my family, even if you do, dont go running your mouth about it, OKAY? That is pretty pethetic that you people sit here and judge people, GET A LIFE!!!!!!!

It becomes our business when these losers go around stealing from our local stores.

Please adults out there have some compassion on this
child she is hurting dont blame her dont lash out at her
I know knight and Wells and they are very good boys they
just made very bad decisions and now they have to deal
with the consequences. but leave this child alone.

I suppose some people think a rattle snake is a great pet! So I am sure the boys families think they are great. I want say they can't change but a leopard usually does not change his spots.

The family should stop demanding people to keeep quite, they are not the ones that went out committing crimes left and right.

I agree with others on here, if you are mad at anyone or hurt by anyone it should be the boys themselves NOT EVERYONE ELSE!!!

I feel sure that if this was someone else other than a relative you would be wanting to tell everyone what trash they were.

Point is, glad you love your family but to the rest of us they are useless and deserve whatever they get!

I hope one day your not faced with this situation if so you
will see how it feels. and actually no I would not trash
someone else I may say I will pray for them and their family
but I know this is someones child, brother, grandchild etc
you know we know what they have done is not right and
they will have to pay for it as they should but a simple good
job to the police would be appropriate not hate comments.
