Police give Halloween safety tips
Published Friday, October 23, 2009
As Halloween approaches, anyone with kids should be aware of dangers associated with trick-or-treating and other activities.
For this reason, local law enforcement reminds both parents and kids of the dos and don’ts of Halloween.
“We discourage parents from taking kids to neighborhoods they don’t know,” Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer said.
Motorists should be alert when driving on Oct. 30 and 31, especially in residential areas. It is a good idea to avoid high-traffic trick-or-treating areas if at all possible. Those who are driving to and from home should drive slowly, Fulmer said.
Likewise, trick-or-treaters and accompanying adults are advised to wear bright, reflective clothing and carry flashlights so they will be easily seen.
Those who venture out should stay in groups, walking on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
“I’m always optimistic that we’ve got good people in our neighborhoods and that everybody takes extra precautions,” Fulmer said.
Unfortunately, illegal activity can happen on Halloween. This can range from rolling yards to acts of vandalism such as egging homes and vehicles. Fulmer said so far, Jemison has been fortunate this year.
He also discourages parents from taking kids out to roll yards.
“It looks bad. It’s not right for the homeowner, and they’re committing a crime,” he said.
The following are more tips provided by the Alabama Department of Public Health:
•Swords and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible.
•Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.
•Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation.
•Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks.
•Lower your risk for eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
•Wear well-fitting costumes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.
•Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook well.
•Enter homes only if you’re with an adult.
•Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

I agree with you on this one kw.
I loved rolling yards as a teenager. We never did it to be mean to anyone. We just loved the fun of doing it. We only did it to people we knew and I do not remember anyone getting mad over it. I have had my yard rolled but have never gotten mad over it much less tried to have someone arrested for it.
I am sure some will say it looks bad and is hard to clean up. Okay, that may be true, and I could see if the person that rolled the yard had to come and clean it up. But I can't understand making someone have a criminal record for such a silly thing. Anyway, that is the way I see it.
I do not understand egging people's cars or houses. The eggs will damage a car's paint.

"Rolling yards" is at a minimum littering and in some, maybe most, cases also vandalism. If the police do their jobs, they will arrest and cite the ones that they find doing this. If they happen to claim that they never are able to catch anybody doing that then they're either not telling the truth or just not doing their job. Either one would be unbecoming of police officers, but not altogether unusual. The ones caught should be fined AND made to clean up the mess. If the parents object then they should also be made to help clean up the mess.

The age difference doesn't have anything to do with the fact that "rolling" someone's property is littering and probably vandalism and AGAINST THE LAW. Nor does it matter who it was that was breaking the law, what matters is that the law is being broken. Of course, the police might not want to catch them for fear of whose kid it might be that they catch. While you and others might find it to be big fun to litter and/or vandalize someone's property, many property owners don't like it, nor do their neigbors. And they shouldn't have to be subjected to it. If the police can't (or won't) catch these miscreants then it really doesn't say much for them. Then again, maybe it does.

Miscreants...!!!???? LOL !!!! miscreants....lololol...sorry...I just pictured ...Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge hanging out the window in his nightcap shaking his fist and screaming, "get off my lawn, you miscreants".....can't stop lol...Seriously, though....I agree with Graves...lighten up a little.....moonlit, toilet paper draped trees dancing in the breeze on a crisp October evening brings back memories of good, clean fun....something today's teenagers could use a lot more of, in my humble opinion.

More safety advice:
Parents should always taste test their childrens candy...for safety...especially the chocolate.

November the fact that the law is being broken is suppose to impress who? Illegal immigrants do it every day and nothing is done about that. How can we as a society say some people can break the law and it is okay because there are a lot of them breaking that law or at least do nothing about it, yet tell kids you can't have a little fun because it is against the law.
Sorry but lighten up a bit.

What's the difference between throwing toilet paper all over someone's property on any given day in October and dumping your household garbage on someone's lawn at any other time? In case some of you are too dense or purposely obtuse to know, the answer is NOTHING! No difference whatsoever. The supposed "all in fun" defense just won't cut it with me. Lot's of people who rob stores and burgularize homes do it for "fun". I don't see any difference whatsoever.
kw: Your habit of attempting to justify your party's ridiculous and indefensible actions and the direction that they are attempting to take this country by denegrading the previous administration on every topic including littering someone's property with toilet paper is becoming more laughable with every passing week. Apparently you forget that I'm a Conservative, NOT a republican.
southernpride: Your statement makes no sense whatsoever. NONE. You seem to be saying that since we don't enforce our immigration laws (which we should be doing) that we should not enforce any others. Completely ridiculous and elementary. And thanks, but I decline to "lighten up" just because you and some other people who need to "tighten up" say to as regards disrespect for other people's property and their right to domestic tranquility. Tranquility does not include having your property trashed by idiots that don't have anything better to be doing.

Seriously, November, try not to have a stroke over it.............didn't you EVER do anything as a teenager that remotely resembled fun? Soap a few windows, maybe?

kw: The answer to your question is zero times. One attempt was made a few years ago, but I'm pretty sure that those fine young men didn't bother anybody else, at least not that night.
Seriously, myhumbleopinion, I'm not having a stroke over this or anything else. Why is having a valid, and correct, opinion tantamount to having a "stroke"? That's curious. As a teenager I did PLENTY that not only remotely resembled fun, but actually was. Still do. However, very few of those things were illegal and NONE of them envolved abusing or disrespecting anyone else's property. Nope, didn't soap any windows. Never saw that as something that needed to be done. If having toilet paper hanging from all of your trees and scattered all over your yard makes you feel as though you are part of the "in crowd" or "with it", then, by all means, I hope your place gets completely covered up. And, to make you really feel like somebody, I hope it rains. That should be something to be really proud of for quite sometime, quite a trophy. I'm sure your neighbors will appreciate it too. Of course, you probably wouldn't care about your neighbors.

Well, first, November, in reference to an opinion....valid is a relevant word but correct is not because opinions are subjective. It just seemed to me that you were getting all bent out of shape over this. I was concerned that you might blow a gasket.
Now, I think we may have finally gotten to the heart of the issue in your last comments.....I don't believe anyone has mentioned anything about having their yard rolled making them feel "with it" or "part of the in crowd". Is the heart of your resentment towards the toilet paper terrorists (good one, kw) based upon the fact that your yard (and therefore you) has not been seen as fit to attack except for the one failed attempt? Maybe you are feeling a bit left out......
By the way.....what method did you use to defend your domain from the "fine young men" that leads you to believe that it ended their night of "terror"? Surely it wasn't something that was illegal???

My opinion that littering people's property with toilet paper, or anything else for that matter, is breakng the law is indeed correct. That requires zero subjectivity. It simply is what it is--- true and correct. Even the police chief agrees, though I have seen no evidence that he intends to enforce the law, but he might surprise me. The heart of my resentment towards litterers is that they are ----LITTERERS. And they display zero respect for the property of others. Do you think it's cool when people drive down the road and throw their McDonald's bags and cups out on the road? As a matter of fact, I recall vividly kwsrgraves complaining extensively about that very thing. He complained about the fast food trash and beer cans along the road in front of his house but seems to have no problem whatsoever with someone covering his property with butt whipe paper. Perhaps you are as inconsistent in your disdain for litterers as he is. Unless, of course, you think it's OK to throw trash out as you are driving down the road. The ONLY difference is that with rolling yards there is actual INTENT to litter someone's property. The method that I used to protect my property was quite legal. I blocked their pickup truck in my driveway with my vehicle, took the keys out of their vehicle (what happened to the keys I can't quite recall, even then), held one of them by his belt loops while I called the police on my cell phone with the other. Does that clear it up for you?

That should have read butt WIPE paper, not whipe. I wouldn't want little di... ur, uh, I mean Rickey to have a coniption. He dearly loves to find misspelled words, except in HIS posts.

Those who throw their trash out on the roadside because they are too lazy to find a trash can are litterers. Teenaged kids who roll yards are kids having fun. You are correct in the FACT that both acts are illegal. Your opinion that these teenagers should be punished to the fullest extent of the law is just that - YOUR opinion. Ponder this: It is illegal for a few teenagers to get a thrill by "decorating" someone's yard with toilet paper (usually someone they know, who is not nearly as upset about their own yard being "vandalized" as you seem to be upset about their yard being "vandalized") and yet is is legal for a woman to kill an unborn baby. Find something a little more worthy of your righteous indignation.
