Sign draws park guests

Published Monday, November 23, 2009

A new sign near Interstate 65 Exit 208 is boosting business at Higgins Ferry Park, Park Ranger Frank Atkinson said.

The sign is located on county right-of-way near Love’s Travel Stop and has more than paid for itself, he said.

Members of Campers on Mission, who are helping to build a children’s home not far off County Road 28, are among those who have recently camped at Higgins Ferry Park because of the sign.

“The sign is great. It helps,” Atkinson told members of the Chilton County Commission Monday night.

In other business, Commissioner Bobby Agee asked commissioners to review a courthouse security plan and be prepared to discuss it at the next meeting. The plan was developed by a committee made up of Sheriff Kevin Davis, Emergency Management Agency Director Bill Collum, and Commissioner Allen Caton.

“We need to be prepared to do something on this one way or the other,” Agee said.

Caton also requested on behalf of the commission that the Sheriff’s Department step up patrols on County Road 25.

The commission also:

• Voted to allow a large, potentially dangerous, tree to be cut along County Road 28 near Higgins Ferry Park for just over $300

• Lowered the speed limit to 30 mph on a stretch of County Road 15 from the Mulberry Creek Bridge to just past Mulberry Baptist Church

• Reappointed Emily Hussey to the library board

• Went into a brief executive session for the discussion of good name and character.
