Jobless rate back to 10 percent

Published Friday, November 20, 2009

Chilton County’s unemployment rate rolled back into double digits for October.

The number of unemployed Chilton County residents increased to 10 percent last month, which represents 1,886 locals without jobs. That’s a slight rise from September’s 9.7-percent mark.

The county’s numbers are still better than Alabama’s average. The state’s unemployment rate rose to 10.9 percent, up from September’s 10.7 percent. The new figure represents 226,790 Alabamians without work.

Most of last month’s job losses occurred in the financial, manufacturing, and natural resources and mining sectors.

The state saw gains in government, professional and business services, trade, transportation, utilities, and education and health services.

“While we did experience a slight increase in the unemployment rate, I am proud to announce that Alabama is already paying federal extension benefits to those claimants who qualify,” said Tom Surtees, director of the Department of Industrial Relations. “This extension was only signed into law on Nov. 6, so that represents a less than two week turnaround time on distributing these much needed dollars.

The state estimates that so far 12,000 Alabamians are eligible for the federal extension.

The counties with lowest unemployment rate were: Shelby at 7.4 percent, Madison at 7.5 percent and Coffee at 8.3 percent.

Counties with the highest unemployment rate were Wilcox at 25.1 percent, Dallas at 21.9 percent and Conecuh at 20.5 percent.

The odd thing is we have so many unemployed yet I still see so many "NOW HIRING" signs. That is not to mention the Census work that was in the paper the other day. I even heard one manager saying that their employees were dropping like flies. Imagaine, that.. an air conditioned / heated building with light manual labor requirements and such a place having employees qutting so often it could be compared to "dropping like flies." I just don't get it.

I know 4 people out of a job, 1 sits at home and sleeps most all day then says there is no use in trying because of the unemployment rate but has the nerve to ask me for cigarette money, 1 stays at home and plays FARM TOWN (or whatever that game is on Facebook) 1 parties all night and and sleeps all day and blames society for his situation, but the last 1 got laid off from a 40,000 + /year job and he refuses to file for unemployment, he has worked at a resturant bussing tables, working security at concerts and takes care of his daughter to decrease child care.

My point is some people want to use unemployment as an excuse to do nothing while others are trying hard to find a job but I am afraid that just as my example above shows, the ones trying to find a job is 1 out of 4. Maybe I'm wrong, just my observation from my little world.

Could someone tell me where some of these now hiring signs are? I have a teenager who needs to get out and get a job. I would really appreciate it.

I get tired of hearing people say the actual unemployment rate is incorrect because it doesn't take into consideration those who have had unemployment benefits expire. Really in our area we have been fortunate that most all lay offs have been within the past year therefore benefits would not have run out from my basic understanding of unemployment. (please correct me if I am wrong) 4 to 5% is the normal range during a thriving economy right? So does that mean the 4 to 5% wouldn't work in a pie factory tasting pies?

I agree Steve, He should get the unemployment but in his mind he is going to be working somewhere pretty quick. I think last I heard he has a job to start on Dec. 1.

My wife and I helped a lady last month that said her unemployment had stopped and in reality she had mismanaged her unemployment and the lights were being cut off. I felt foolish after finding out the true story but I did learn a lesson.

Tommy, in my experience most of the people that do actually need a hand out are the ones that do not ask for it and are doing everything within their power to help themselves.
