What is this?
Verbena’s poor floor a shame
Published Tuesday, November 17, 2009
Football season has been over at Verbena since an 18-6 loss to Marbury on Oct. 30, but the ball is still bouncing funny.
Basketballs aren’t supposed to do that, but the hills and valleys in the floor of the school’s old gymnasium can make dribbling a difficult task.
As a result of some hard work over the summer, Verbena’s boys team on Monday picked up its first win since 2006. The girls team last season ended a long losing streak. The programs—under the direction of coaches Jonathan Shedd and Jennifer Ingram, respectively—are making progress. The same cannot be said about the facility they play in.
Three problem areas arose with the heavy rains this fall. One was flattened with more than a hundred cinder blocks stacked on top of plywood. A second was corrected by Shedd and assistant principal Tommy Headley. The two spent a combined 13 hours of work cutting out an area of floor underneath the basket closest to the locker rooms, straightening the metal rods that run under the joints and then replacing the floor.
The process will probably be repeated on the third spot, on the corner of the floor nearest the concession stand, during Christmas break. Until then, players will keep carrying blocks off the floor for practice and putting the blocks back on at the end of the day.
For senior Brad Boswell, it’s not the ideal end to a career that finally includes some wins. “You can’t even dribble over there,” he said. “We had some people complain about it last year.”
Members of the county board of education are aware of the problem but have not enough money and many schools that need some of it.
Superintendent Keith Moore said the county’s first priority has to be removing portable classrooms from campuses before it can turn its attention to other facilities, such as gyms.
“We haven’t done anything to that gym basically since the thing’s been built,” new Board of Education president Chris Davis said during Tuesday’s meeting. “We need to do something down there.”
Something will surely be done, but probably too late for players like Boswell to enjoy. Until then, Verbena players will keep inviting their opponents to dribble toward that spot in the floor.

From the Front page - "The board approved unanimously the bid of about $1.267 million by Bennett Building to construct a gymnasium at Clanton Middle School." The next quotes are from the above story "Members of the county board of education are aware of the problem but have not enough money and many schools that need some of it."
"Superintendent Keith Moore said the county’s first priority has to be removing portable classrooms from campuses before it can turn its attention to other facilities, such as gyms."
Moore chilton county logic ?

This floor was replaced just a few years ago and its been like this at least since then. I remember seeing the piles of cinder blocks on the floor during P.E. alot. Why didnt they fix this when they put the new floor down?

i dont remember them getting any new floors......the would pile blocks.....then they would put a coating over it.....that floor is about 20 or so years old.....possible older.....i highly doubt they are new......and they never fixed it period cause their soo cheap....so they would pile blocks.....but it kept getting worse and worse

This is a problem for all of the county. I checked, my child does not play against Verbena, if they did, I probably wouldn't let them play. The wrong step on a bad floor, could end their playing at all. But with the County School Board and the Superintendant's acknowledgement that there is a problem, they are accepting full responsibility if something happens to an athlete while playing on this floor. I sure hope the county can afford that.

Thank you Stephen for writing this article, because now more people are aware of the problem. The board has little concern for Verbena High. Thats my opinion not a fact. I have no doupt that the board acknowlegdes VHS's needs and plans to address them, but I believe the board would rather build CCHS a water park before VHS has a sprinkler. Of course thats just my opinion.

If I am not mistaken, Superintendent Moore (who I believe has done a good job) graduated from VHS along with board member Chris Davis. Another board member, lives directly behind the school itself. So, I am quite sure there is some patronage toward VHS, but very little maintenance dollars to go along with it. New construction money is funded from a whole different pool of funds than maintenance. However, the disheartening of it all is the fact that if homegrown VHS graduates, both heading and serving on the board, cannot get anything done for the school, who can?

im a bena basketball player and yes, we do have to move bricks to the humps to "make them go down" but seriously CCHS does get all the money of chilton co. and plus they already have like 3 gyms we've had that gym for like 30 years. and i think we should get a new one.

Just to clarify: Clanton Middle School is getting a new gym because the building students are currently using for a gym was originally built as classroom space. So, constructing a new gym will in turn create classroom space, which is consistent with Keith Moore's statement about the board's priorities.

The gym floor at Verbena has not been relaced. In 2001 the floor was refinished only. I know this because I was junior at Verbena at the time and we had to practice at the old Cooper school (which is another lovely facility as well).
This facility has needed replacement for quite some time. The floor problem is not a new development, there just has been no media coverage of it until now. We did the same drill of moving around cinder blocks every year while I was in high school. I also recall a 12 inch strip of floor being removed down one side of the gym to allow more room for the floor to expand.
It would be nice to see a new gym at Verbena, but there are many other things that need money before a gym is built.
Also, it is nice to see Verbena get a win. Congrats!

Regardless of the situation no Chilton County student should feel like they don't matter and that's what I think is happening here. The basketball programs are turning around and need to feel like the county is behind them. I saw the humps in the floor last year and the new ones this year and it's not just a liability for the players. It's also a liability for every PE student that has to use that gym.

To kwsrgraves :: yes CCHS Gym structure might be 46 years old but the question is..is the interior that old?..NO! because I seem to recall a few years ago CCHS received a renovation to there interior..and its a shame when CCHS, elementary, and the middle schools can get renovated and new gyms and VHS can not get a floor and not only the floor but bleachers . At VHS we are not asking for a whole new gym [which would be great) we are just asking for a new floor.
I am a senior at VHS and I also play basketball and yes we do have to haul bricks off and on before and after practice and that's just ridiculous. When I was younger my sister had to do the samething..and the generation before that and so on.this is not a new problem that has just popped up. This is a recurring problem that's been taking place for many years and its a safety hazard. And yes I might be a senior and will not get to play on that court if VHS ever recieves a new floor or gym. its just the simple thought of knowing the children at VHS has a safe place to have P.E. and also to play the game of basketball.

i just think its pathetic....we cant even get a new gym floor....its just horrible...not only is it important for our safety....just think if someone gets hurt...they could practically sue and own the school....i believe replacing a simple floor would be much much easier...just my opinion....
and kwsrgraves....sorry about your mother..

It wasnt replaced, i think it was just resurfaced. It used to be some other kind of dull wood that looked to have been there 100 years..and now it's closer to an actual basketball court (except for the messed up spots). It was "fixed" I believe my 8th grade year so its not VERY new.

Verbena's been the stepchild of the county at least since I started there. They're always the last to get upgrades and they're WAY behind academically than the rest of the county in terms of the classes they offer and the qualify of the teaching..

This is my first post so take it easy on what I am about to say. I do resent the statement by Mr.Graves that suggest that VHS Alumni are not capable of making a correct statement on here without grammatical errors. This may be the case and I may have penty of grammatical errors in this statement. Mr.Graves and Mr.Praahe I am a VHS alumni and I am proud of it my husband is also a VHS alumni both of my daughters are VHS alumni. Matter of fact my whole family are VHS alumni and we all work, we all pay our taxes and we all give back to our community. We all have productive jobs in the County. My oldest daughter won the academic award in her undergraduate studies in nursing and is now at the top of her class in her graduate studies in nursing so I deeply resent the fact that you suggest VHS alumni are not educated at VHS. I had the best teachers ever they taught me not only educational things but they also taught me that hard work along with respect for your fellow workers will go a long way. So before you want to make a statment like the one you have made please do your research. There are alot of productive citizens in this county and in this nation that are VHS alumni. I understand the topic of this discussion is about funding. I also know that VHS is at the bottom of the pile when it comes to this funding. I voted for Mr.Keith Moore, Mr.Chris Davis and Mr. Howard Daughtery I also know that they love VHS and when the funding is available I believe with all of my heart they will help VHS. Until then we will do as we always do we will work hard with what we have!!!! GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has gone from a simple discussion/arguement on whether Verbena should get a knew gym floor to "they're way behind academically". That is a false, igorant statement not supported by any facts. So, Mr. Praahe, do not insult my school, our students, or our alumni. Your disrespectful comments insist that you have little or no pride for your alma mater.
Mr. Graves, a CCHS alumni member, this is an article to help a high school improve their facilities not a place for an old, bitter man to rant about spelling errors. Not everyone has perfect grammer skills. By the way, why don't you take a trip to VHS look around and ask people what they do for VHS. I assure everyone that VHS has plenty of parent/alumni support. Mr. Graves which side of the arguement are you on? Do you support the suggestion that VHS students deserve a new gym floor or do you think that we should suffer because our voices have not been heard til now? May I remind everyone that we are all chilton county resisdents. This is our county and like it or not Verbena High School is a part of it.

I think the board of ed is doing very well managing what budget money they have. There are many problems in schools everywhere, and it would be great to be able to fix the floor at Verbena's gym. However, maintaining teaching units is a higher priority. I graduated from VHS in 1982, and I received a great education from caring teachers there. That's the priority. Period.

kwgraves, I have read a lot of your posts on this site, but never have I heard such arrogance and bigotry come from your keyboard. And to be quite honest, I'm not real sure you are the right representative to be arguing CCHS intellect.
"For the record, my whole family went to VHS with the exception of my brother, one cousin, my deceased mother, my kids, my wife, and me."
Now let's talk about all of these exceptions to attending VHS. You have mentioned, professed, confessed you and your family's criminal past to the point of nausea. But if my memory serves me correctly, the majority of these exceptions, according to you, have criminal records. And that's fine, we all make mistakes.......But come on now! You can't pronounce intellectual superiority over a whole community and use as your argument exceptions to your family that DIDN'T attend VHS. I know you have talked extensively about yourself having a criminal record, as well as your brother, and I'm almost certain I remember you mentioning your mother and your wife as having criminal records. If I am wrong about any of these I DO APOLOGIZE!!!! But I can't help but think that your "whole" family might have done well if they had gone to VHS. Just sayin.
"My dad was actually accused by a fellow Verbena resident of moving to Clanton in the early 60s to live the "big life". That's the mentality you're dealing with there. It's absurd! And that's being polite and mild!"
In my humble opinion, what is absurd is you, of all people, suggesting that your intelligence is superior to an entire community of people. Clanton is a nice little town, and Chilton County is now home for me; but I've lived all over the country and as nice as Clanton people are, I'm not sure someone from Clanton carries the credentials to beat their aristocratic chest while glaring at the community just down the road.

jkelley..I agree with you that KW is a parasite and that he feeds off negativity. But the fact that a Verbena alumni could say that we do not have quality teaching is so unfair. We have some of the best teachers in the county and I am a product of Verbena teaching and have the utmost respect for our principle and teachers that are teaching now. I only wish that we could get the needed funding for our gym floor. But right now funding for our education is needed. So as the data proves, we will always put our education first. When we are blessed with the needed funds you can rest assured that the alumni and community will help get the floor fixed it will happen in time.

VHSALUMNI81...I understand your concern. I too, am a graduate of VHS and would love to see this issue put to rest. Simply put, this is what kw likes to do and that is see who will take the bait next. In this case several took the bait and ran with it, however there were several good points that were made.

Well I'm sorry if it hurts, But I'm a Verbena alum too. Verbena is NOT up to the academic standards the rest of the county is. I loved Verbena while i was there but I'm just being honest. Verbena isnt the same as it was in 81-82. If Verbena were to get the same funding as CCHS and the rest of the schools, it wouldnt be a problem.

stating facts when you have nothing to back it up is simply pointless...Praahe.....
anyway...why are we talking about this....this article was about getting our gym fixed...we dont ask for 1.2 MILLION!! dollars to build the gym....we just want a new floor at least...i think we at least deserve that..

PrAaHe:::When was the last time you were at Verbena? Who teaches there now? who is the principle there now?How many people attended the scholars bowl last year? How many of those people placed in the scholars bowl? How many people are in the beta club? VHS may not be quite the same as it was in 81-82 in some areas but it is still VHS, still having quality people graduate and going on to make successful citizens. As far as academic standards I don't think you quite know your stuff on that argument. Also, to KW you do not deserve a response, it is obvious you have way to much time on your hands.

this is just rediculous... i am a current basketball player of verbena high school and i think that we atleast deserve a new floor! i mean we could ask for a new auditorium b/c ours is infested with roaches or a new band room b/c it has rats or new bleachers b/c they wiggle and wobble when you sit down or a new weight room b/c it floods when it rains or a million other things but no we are just asking for a new gym floor b/c it is a major health hazard to not only the basketball teams but every person that walks through there.... and im sure that if clantons gym floor was in the condition of ours it would be replaced asap... im just saying....

kws, for your info, Verbena flowers come in more than purple & violet!
http://annual-plants.suite101.com/articl...
The link above is proof, try researching a bit before you comment on something you have no knowledge about.
But in the event you can't see the info is below as well. By the way, I attended Verbena as well, & Verbena was our class flower to boot!!!!
Popular Varieties and Cultivars of Verbena
Verbena Aztec Series – Beautiful verbenas in red, pink, and orange; the Aztec Series verbenas reflect the beauty of the Mexican sun.
Verbena 'Violet Eyes' – Soft, rosy-pink petals with darker, purple centers make this verbena a charming addition.
Verbena 'Imagination' – Vivid, blue-purple, flower clusters that are profuse spring through fall

ms-lacey...easy on the name calling. He did not tell you about being in jail someone else brought that out on this thread first. Also there is no room for the name calling (retards). I feel your pain as you are a current student and you want to be heard. When you want to be heard, #1 you never point someone else's faults out, #2 you stay to the point that is at hand...meaning you never get sucked into a trap of arguing things that are not relevant to the current point. #3 you always make a valid point of what the benefits will be and the results others may see while asking them to invest their time and money into it. I am for you, not against you. I have never received the results that I needed for anything by posting on a thread and trying to be heard in that manner....From a concerned VHS Alumni...

jkelley...I agree with your comment to Ms.Lacey but I think they are just frustrated. They really have a reason to be when you think of all the things that are wrong with the school building and the gym and they see everyone else getting new things. VHS is a k-12 school therefore we do not get as much as other schools do. They only want the gym floor fixed, they don't really understand how the funding works. So students at VHS get your parents and community involved to see what might can be done to get the gym floor fixed. There are alot of alumni that would contribute to a gym floor fund so maybe that is something to look at. Get your parents and go to the next board of education meeting and try to ask again. Hard work always pays off so instead of taking out your frustation on people like graves who could care less about our school put your frustation into something positve.

I am a student at VHS as well. no im not a bball player bt i am a cheerleader. and i think that the players deserve a court better than the one we have now. i agree w/ my friends at VHS. we aint asking for much just a new gym floor. there are many things we could fix at our school bt this is the worst out of them all. the main part that most ppl see is the gym. b/c thats where most of the activities take place. and it needs to be in a better condition than it is. we have tried to fix it bt it doesnt last long the humps come right back up everyday b4 the girls and boys practice they move over 50 bricks which takes up time for them to be practicing && it is going to eventually hurt some of the players. it would be very nice to have a new floor and im pretty sure all of the students at VHS would be very proud to have it. cchs does get alot more money than we do. they get to build a WHOLE NEW GYM bt yet we cant have our FLOOR redone that doesnt make any sense. if we got as much money as cchs then it would be alot better and most of us wouldnt be "complaining" if thts what you want to call it. mostly stating the facts. && VHSALUMNI81 you are right we are frustrated. we are only asking for a little bt 'kwsrgraves' is making it seem like we are asking for alot. I STRONGLY agree w/ Ms.Lacey, ayyluhhshell, && vhsbball34. they have a right to be upset. they are the ones having to play in that situation not all of yall. they all have a right to be frustrated and angry.

I believe the new lights in the Verbena gym that were installed this fall, were the lights that were taken out of the Clanton Gym, oh, perhaps 10 or 12 years ago. Did they take out their floor, too? Perhaps they could just have some more of their scraps!!! That is all they seem able to recieve from the county. Honestly, we are constantly being bombarded about how out of shape out youth have become, and this is an instance where physical activity is going on daily, all day long, and as a county of adults, we can't insure that these children are save? I don't care where you graduated from, if you care about children at all, you should be stepping up and saying "What can I do?" I have and am trying to come up with some money to send to Verbena. My hat is off to the Asst. Principle and to the Coach who tried to fix the problem. That is what we all need to do. FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!!!!

vhsalumni81...yes I know they are frustrated. I see what they play on, my kids are there as well. I try and donate my time as much as possible to the kids at the school. Looks like they need a hand, we should all see what we could do to help now. My comments to Ms-lacey were for her to focus on the task at hand...which is the gym floor.

Does anyone know the cost of fixing the gym floor? Perhaps they could sell a plank, or post what the cost would be, it concerns us all. They play a lot of out of county schools. Those people that follow their school, and go to Verbena to play, are judging all of Chilton County by what they see. Do you think any of them would like to relocate to Chilton County? I think not!!! Not to put their children in schools that can't even furnish their children with a smooth surface to run on. Come on folks!! Let's get busy. Together we can fix this floor!!!

Praahe, Verbena's educational quality is equal if not greater than the quality of the other schools. I am only suggesting that before you blurt out comments about how poor the intelligence in YOUR school is do some research. Show me some facts. Until someone has information to support their degrading suggestions, do not insult my community's educational quality.

I attended VHS and graduated in 1998. During that time the football program was king, and generated enough revenue to finance the entire Athletic Department for the entire year. The same kind of talent and grit is still there, they just don't have a coach that can bring it out in them (Coach Gene Hulsey was railroaded out the coaching job after building the program for 15 years or so). Therefore, attendance (not to mention atmosphere) at the games is way down, and THAT creates all kinds of problems in regards to enthusiasm, support, and revenue. Fix the football program, fix the athletic budget.

The county had money to build a new gym for VHS several years ago. Complaints were made from other schools and the money went elsewhere. How can you NOT see that other schools get better treatment than VHS. Sometimes I think that even if the alumni got up the money needed to replace the humped floor that could result in a serious injury it would not be allowed to be replaced.
The current lights in the VHS gym ARE indeed CCHS's 15 year old lights that were in storage!
No one is asking that VHS get a new gym although that would be nice. They just need a safe floor to play on.
They even had to consider playing all of their games away! What other school in the county does that. The boys coach drives the bus to his own games, but he doesn't complain because he does it for the kids.
Let's see someone else do something for these kids!
They say there's money for new construction, but not money to staff it. How does that work.
Buy the floor and we'll put it in ourselves if we have to!

Ok, Graves you have NO idea whats its like to play on the gym floor. There's BIG humps in it how is that safe? Have YOUR child out there playing on a floor like that when they could simply turn an ankle or anything on that floor. It's not the kids have a problem with hauling the bricks off and on the floor, its the fact that its RIDICULOUS they have to do that. What other schools in the county has to put bricks on there floor come basketball season because theirs humps in the floor? NONE. Exactly. You have way too much time on your hands. & who are you to say we dont have good education, newsflash theres MANY succesful people from VHS. And you act like you are just oh so perfect and never make mistakes. Yeah you're most deff not perfect. Honestly, VHS does atleast need a new floor if nothing else. Who wants to risk their kids playing on that floor and getting hurt and not being able to play period? I mean really. We're not asking for a million bucks just a new floor so kids can play in a safer environment.

This is CRAZY!!! No1 has room to tlk abt our school unless you have been there and knw whats going on!! Our school is a great school. and no1 should be putting us down. Every1 KNOWS CCHS gets more money than we do its clear as day!! Bt if we want anything done anytime soon then yeah we are going to have to do it ourselves. and if you have got the time and energy to be writing all this and reading all this then you should have enough time to be getting us up some money cause more than likely aint no1 else gonna do it for us. thanks for the ppl tht are ACTUALLY doing something for our school.

You didnt even go to the school in the first place so you dont have anyright tlking abt it you dont even know what you are tlking abt. Why do people want to argue about us getting a new gymfloor? honestly. almaost EVERYBODY (athlete wise) plays on our floor. wouldnt you want us to be safe? and we are doing something to try and help our situation mr KW! we move tons of cinder blocks everyday for practice and yet those humps come back. and our assistant principle is even doing something about it. but people have to run their mouths about us. why do people say we are uneducated? honestly. just because we are a small school DOES NOT GIVE ANYBOSY THE RIGHT TO SAY THAT!!!! it unfair! we are watching other schools getting something new everyday it seems like! (thorsby is getting a new feild house i hear) UNFAIR! we are not asking for anything else but a floor! how hard is that to comprehend? even though VHS is a small school. we are a very family related school. we treat everybody the people are supposed to be treated. (most of the people anyways) and honestly i think we have the best school spirit around. im just saying.

I don't understand how you can say that a school with a "fire walker" instead of smoke detectors and fire alarms gets the same treatment as all the other schools! I love VHS and the community of Verbena. I don't think it gets much better. The basketball teams are working hard and the programs are turning around. Let's give them something they can be proud of.
I am not from around here, but from what I've seen Verbena has exemplary faculty and staff. I believe Mr. Raines won a state "Principal of the Year" award.
Let's raise money to get the floor ourselves and stop waiting on the BOE because if we wait on them we'll still be waiting when the gym falls down.

Regardless of what the past has brought, whether we like what was done or not, the children playing on this gym floor was not a part of that. Whether we like each other or not, these children can't help that. Whether our school has all, and Verbena does not, these children can't help that. Politics and equal education sometime make children suffer. I believe this is one of those times. Chilton County do we have what it takes for these children to be safe?? Or are we going to argue over who has what? If you have always had the best, it is hard for you to understand why those that haven't feel it is unfair. But, count your blessings and share and help and be for the best for all the county, not just where you are. If all will help, I guarantee that if Thorsby, or Isabella, or Jemison, or Clanton has a problem that poses a threat to their children, the people of Verbena would do their best to help them. That is what we are here for. To help each other. I say we get a new floor for that gym, BOE, neighbors, enemies, all need to get on board and be an example to all children. Yes, it will help the kids at all schools to realize that all Chilton County cares about our children!!!

I would like to express my appreciation for Part-Timer and his concern for the safety of the students. He has a great idea about selling the planks. This will give not only VHS alumni but others who want to go a good thing for our school an opportunity to help.
I am a VHS alumni and my kids attend & participate in sports at VHS. I have seen through the years how VHS has gotten the short end of any funding. If very dedicated VHS alumni & friends in higher places within the BOE can't bring the funding to VHS, then it likely never will be there for us. VHS is a smaller community, and not alot of fundraisers are that successful because the families there are not as wealthy. If those that are not familiar with VHS would get to know the students & faculty, they would be proud to help our school. This school not only produces great academics, it also produces GREAT KIDS. Not all schools are like VHS (by the way VHS doesn't need uniforms because I have not heard of or seen where any kids have been made fun of because they don't wear the latest fashions or name brand jeans). I was taught by wonderful teachers at VERBENA to judge people by their CHARACTER and not the color of their skin or the clothes that they wear.
All the jibberish from KWGraves and the others does nothing to benefit anybody, and should be regarded as ignorant rant. Don't give it the time of day.

I noticed that it was stated that the Verbena coach drives the bus to all the games. That does not happen at our school, but if one coach can why not all coaches. The money that is paid to the bus driver could go into the fund to fix this floor, that way the coaches wouldn't have to worry about their players when they play at Verbena. Wouldn't have to scout and see where the humps are. Our teachers, coaches, and all personnel should be getting the same treatment. Does anyone have a better suggestion? Please let's be creative and do something!!!!

That is not something we are concerned w/. they only thing we really care abt is getting our floor redone!! Clanton is getting a part of there school redone//fixed,a new gym, AND there other gym is getting redone!! the board is going to give them the money to do ALL that BT yet we cant even get our FLOORS redone so no1 will get hurt... that makes ALOT of sence...NOT. Mr. Graves, I honor you for being a veteran. I know what military sacrifices are. There was a time when you had no choice, you were drafted. Now people choose to be in the military. That was a choice. These children do not have a choice. They must go to school. They participate in gym class. You stated the gym floor was a "want" not a need. I beg to differ with you on that point. This is a need. They don't have a choice. I did not attend any Chilton County school, so I am not into who is the smartest or has the most. some of these comparisons we can see with the naked eye, but that is not the problem. If the Chilton County School Board is a board for all students, then it is their responsibility to make sure the safety of all students is the same. If it is unsafe to run on Verbena's gym floor, the culprit is the Chilton County Board of Education. They are the ones to fix the problem. They have stated that they do not have the money for a floor, so now it falls back on the staff, boosters, parents, or concerned citizens of Chilton County to see that the problem is fixed. But we need to hold this board fully responsible for any injuries that may occur until this floor is repaired, to the point of being declared safe.Perhaps the board member that is from the Verbena area will step up and say this is the amount needed, and this is how we are going to raise the money. I will be glad to contribute, as I know, from hearing many others talk, they will be also. JUST FIX THIS FLOOR!!!!

Thanks for the invitation, but I will be preparing for my family. Regardless of the handbook that is signed, a parent should feel that their child is being taken care of and that every precaution that can be made, has been made to meet the safety standards for their child. I just can't imagine, that it is listed in said handbook, we do not do good maintenance, and therefore your child will face dangerous and difficult situations as they attend school. I can't believe that anyone would ever think that this is ok. It may have been like this for 20 years. My conclusion, is maintenance with the school board is 20 years behind. So, any maintenance requests that have been turned in so far this year, should not be addressed until the one that is 20 years old has been taken care of. Even if that means that the school where my family attends has to have their needs met, unless there is iminent danger, then that is the way it should be. County School Board!!!! What about County Commissioners, can you do anything to help??
Posted by part_timer (anonymous) on November 23, 2009 at 10:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Please forgive me, I sometimes think faster than I can type, I meant to say---Even if that means that the school where my family attends has to wait to have their needs met, than that is the way it should be. I am not into sqabbling, just wishing someone with the knowhow, would step up and take the bull by the horns, and start the ball rolling and get this gym fixed. I noticed that they won again tonight. Congratulations Verbena. You are showing what true grit you have.

Until the time comes, no child should be in a position to have their safety compromised. The behaviour that you mentioned, I am afraid, is found in all schools. I, too, have witnessed this myself, at all the Chilton County Schools, as well as any school that I have visited during a sports contest. Even at college level. That is not what we have been discussing. The lack of care and concern with our elected officials is our main problem. I prefer, and were I living closer, my children would be attending the smaller schools, such as Verbena. I like the personal touch that a smaller school provides, rather than the extremes that have to be catered to in a larger school. Either the extremely smart or the worst trouble maker are the ones that gain the attention of the staff at the larger schools. A middle of the road, everyday child is overlooked and left out. Not so in the smaller school. I would daresay that almost every teacher at Verbena could call each child by name. That initself means more than all the extras that the big school has to offer. That is my opinion. That stems from personal experience, and that is why it is so tragic that someone who is in charge of our education system shows such a lack of knowledge in what our children need. Again my opinion. I just want to hear--How much?--Who do we donate to?--and Where do we send the money? I had hoped that this sportswriter would have followed up and would have helped gain some of this information. I just want to be a helper not a griper, nor a complainer. Those things don't help. Please, Chilton County, let's fix that gym floor!!!!

I think that most people understand that consolidation is indeed in the near future for Verbena. I believe that if something were to happen to the building it would without a doubt not be rebuilt, but we have a problem. The wood in the floor expands at certain times of the year creating large humps on the playing floor. A coach and an assistant principal spent 13 hours of which they could have been with their families to fix one of these humps. The problem is not the degradation of American youth or food thrown under the bleachers, but wood that swells when the humidity is high and we have had a lot of rain here lately. I am pretty sure that the bleachers are swept under and food under the bleachers is not just a problem at VHS. I think you would find that at any school.
Mr. Graves maybe these students need some leadership in order to coordinate their efforts to raise money to replace the floor, so maybe instead of degrading them you could try to help them. They may just be in need of some adult guidance.
Posted by TNgirlinAL (anonymous) on November 24, 2009 at 1:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Part_timer, if you were to call Verbena and speak with Coach Mike Harris the Athletic Director there he might be able to direct you as to where you can send a donation.
Thank you for trying to be a part of the solution instead of stirring the pot!
Posted by concerned_VHS_fan (anonymous) on November 24, 2009 at 1:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I have got to say to Mr.Graves you have got to be the most arrogant man in Clanton. Who cares about your donations to every other Tom, Dick and Harry. It doesn't mean a hill of beans where this issue is concerned. If you can not be an adult and be supportive why bother? Is this some sick delusional game you enjoy? Trying to tick folks off?! The main issue here is the safety of the children of VHS. That's the only thing that matters. If you can't see that I apologize maybe you need to go run laps or sprints on the floor. Maybe even try bouncing a ball there. Until you have been & seen what the kids are doing you have no place to put it down. I grew up in a small town and went to a VERY small school. A poor school. Best education I received was in that school. VHS is no exception to that. I hate that I didn't get to graduate from that school, but had to move to one as big if not bigger than CCHS. It was horrible. I bet if you asked the students at Verbena if they would willingly go to CCHS they would say no in a heart beat. At least at Verbena they are SOMEONE. They are treated as though they are someone. Which is what kids today need. I am concerned about their safety regarding the issue of the floor & it saddens me that they are being overlooked. I myself would be ashamed to show my face in public if I was the superintendent. Why not spend the money allocated for that middle school gym on kids who need it. These are kids that might, if they work hard enough get a scholarship. Yet it is hard for them to work that hard when their floor is as wavy as theirs is. Seriously is it fair to say: ya know what y'all are a small unneeded burden we are just gonna close y'all down? NO, it is FAR from it!!! No one is whining here but you. Everyone else wants a solution to the problem. The FLOOR. Do you have one?!?!? Because instead of this back and forth bickering and singing your own praises, maybe you have a solution. The coach there is working just as hard as he can. I have been told about the many hours he has been putting into the program. The late nights and the constant concern he has. Not to mention the fact that he not only has to coach the games, he has no assistant, nor a bus driver for away games and yet he does it ALL. Haven't heard a word about him complaining. Maybe if everyone showed that amount of care and concern something would get done. He does it because he cares. He sees something in these kids that others are fixing to see. They are proving themselves. 2 wins already this season. Come on, bless their hearts they are busting it. The least we adults can do is bust ours a little for them. My husband and I would be happy to come down and help put in a floor. Why? We CARE!!! It breaks our hearts that children are being overlooked and discarded for being from the wrong side of Clanton. That is plain ignorance on every board member, the superintendent, as well as the county officials as a whole.

Ok, we have a name. Now do we know how much we need to raise? Are we certain that what is donated will go to the floor? People of Chilton County, let's call and talk to Coach Harris and find out just what this will get us. And if you can't let's call the BOE and find out what they are doing about the floor. I noticed when I checked the AHSAA, for the schedule, that there is a Christmas Tournament scheduled at Verbena. I commend a coach that is willing to showcase his team, even if the County he teaches in does not support them. I only hope that these schools understand what this team is going through, and hope that no one gets injured. I am becoming a silent Verbena supporter, only because I have to be an ardent supporter of where my family is enrolled. Go Verbena!!! You have the spirit of greatness. Hope you keep on and keep winning!!!! But, let's FIX THAT FLOOR!!!!!!

Oh and another thing.. Why does a middle school need a gym? When I was in school everyone shared the High School gym. Seems if they need the classroom space that bad, there can be a compromise made for that school. Give them the classrooms let them have that space make the middle and high school kids share one gym. Seems like that would free up more than enough money to fix VHS's gym as well as put in smoke detectors. Don't ya think!!! They are middle school. Face it, they are not going to get a scout coming out to watch them play and they just ain't going to get offers for college while in the 8th grade. Oh and the idea about planks BRILLIANT!!!

Mr. Graves, I must say this. The examples of adversity you have given are examples that are not common every day. Also no one here is destined to live in a trailer although much to your dismay, trailers now a days are not the normal old fashioned ones. So if one of these students grow up to live in a trailer they are no less important than you. Your home does not define you. If you think that money is everything I pity you. These kids have shown more spirit and more desire than I have seen in a very long time. Yes your methods are extremely unorthodox. Very cruel and very uncalled for. If you think putting someone down, there school, what they live in or where they work is helping in anyway form or fashion. You are WRONG. That is nothing but discouragement. Which is something these children don't need. And honey you didn't help ideas spawn. Actual concerned citizens and students are what helped the ideas to be spawned. NOT YOU!! Nor did you bring it into the limelight I believe that is taking credit from the sports editor that actually done the work to bring the issue forward. As for being arrogant that is NOT something to be proud of. Because along side arrogance is ignorance. See it everyday!! And yes most of us fix problems everyday, not just you. As for the don't complain, yeah well you see men like you that have the attitude that you have only respond to certain forms of communication. I believe when you go to ask for help in most instances you must file a complaint. So don't complain?! Don't push the issue? It isn't going to happen. It is going to be pushed and back your ears old boy you are going to be hearing a LOT of complaining until it gets fixed.

I dont live in a trailer, i actually live in a big house .. but i wouldnt care if i DID live in a trailer... like concerned_VHS_fan said. your home does not define who you are..your not any less important or for that part more important than anyone else just cause you live in a smaller/bigger house.
I know nothing about you and you know nothing about me,
therefore we shouldnt judge.. and im sorry i did.

This is one of the saddest things I have ever witnessed. This is not about any one person. This is not about who did what. This is not about who thought of what. This is not about who lives in what. This is not about any of the things that ya'll keep harping about. If you feel the need to think that you need all the glory. Take it!! I myself think that all the attention needs to go toward the Verbena students and athletes that are playing every day on this pitiful excuse of a floor. Yes, I am aware of how the school board divies up the money. I am also aware of what happens, when a few decide that it is time to do away with one school. They pull all the funding away, they don't do maintenance, they don't provide a safe environment, and they turn their head to any problem that may arise. The outcome is parents start pulling their children from those schools and put them in a safer, more funded environment. This is so that the number of students will drop, and thus give those that want this small school to close, ammunition to back up their beliefs. Fair? Heck NO!!!! Reasonable? Heck NO!! But that is what our elected officials are doing. I believe the superintendant even pulled his child from Verbena. Sad, sad, sad!!!! Bus those children a long way so you can move Chilton County High up to a different class. How unfair to all children. Stand up!!! Verbena, Isabella, and all other small schools in the county. After Verbena, you're next. Now, FIX THAT AWFUL FLOOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ain't that the truth!!! Slowly they get rid of what could be the best ever. It is plain sad!!! Has anyone contacted any of the news stations? Stir up a hornets nest. If the superintendent won't listen and take action go higher. Kids write letters to the state find your representatives names and addresses mail them. Get the word out. Maybe your English teachers could use this as an assignment. Letter writing in the proper style and wording is a much needed skill. What better way to learn and practice it than taking action for your school and yourselves. Us adults need to get together and have a brainstorm on fundraisers. Kids get your parents involved if they aren't already. I will help in any way I can. Ignore what Mr. Graves says people like him prey on people that are not in what he believes is his social circle. Kids keep your heads held high. You will prevail. Your parents and you faculty as well as you community loves and cares for each and everyone of you. Take pride in that! Never let anyone look down on you for your age or your circumstance in life. It is the ones who have worked the hardest who get the extra jewels in their crowns. Not the ones that step on the little guy.
