Board approves CMS gym bid
Published Tuesday, November 17, 2009
The Chilton County Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday approved the bid for one major construction project but decided to wait on another project.
The board approved unanimously the bid of about $1.267 million by Bennett Building to construct a gymnasium at Clanton Middle School.
School Superintendent Keith Moore said students currently use a building intended as classroom space for physical education activities.
The board did not take action on the construction of new classrooms at Clanton Elementary School after Moore told the board that such a project would drain the system’s funds.
The board had previously discussed the construction of 24 classrooms, which would cost at least $2.5 million.
That price tag would leave the system without Public School College Authority money to use for faulty roofs at several schools and repairs to Verbena’s gymnasium.
The board decided to collect more information about how much roof repairs would cost then reintroduce the topic of construction of classrooms at CES, which could mean the addition of fewer than 24 classrooms.
“We can’t have leaky roofs—no ifs or ands about it,” board member Curtis Smith said.
Earlier in the meeting, the board unanimously selected Chris Davis as its new president and Ann Glasscock as its vice-president.

I never understood why the new school was built without a gym. Some of that infamous Chilton County logic?

Great decision, Chilton County BOE. Have any of you been to Jemison Middle School's gym in recent years? I don't understand why it has not been condemned between leaning walls, rotted floors, and brown water from the faucets and water fountains....I can assure all board members that if it were THEIR children who were using the gym at Jemison Middle on a daily basis then CMS would probably not be getting a shiny new gym to match their shiny new school. But alas.....more good ol' Chilton County politics..........

Read the article again....is it CMS or CES? Either way, our gym at Jemison Middle is in terrible condition. And by the way, our roof leaks too.

Another article states that the floor at the Verbena gym is in poor condition and they have to place cinder blocks on it to keep it flat. Mr. Moore states that there is no money to fix the problem but has accepted a bid of 1.2 Mil to build a gym in Clanton. This just don't seem right.

I know when I voted for Mr. Moore it was with the thought that he would do a little bit more for Verbena since he had some roots there, but to agree with VHS above this is a joke. Verbena's gym has been in need of repairs since I was in school and now that my children go to school there I have found that nothing seems to have gotten any better which is really kind of sad. I am really disappointed to hear that once again Clanton seems to be getting special attention.

WHAT THE HECK? IS the board forgetting Jemison needs repairs, THORSBY needs a NEW school, Verbena needs help, Isabella needs help. Why are we investing more in Clanton right now?
The students at Clanton are very important and deserve only the best but the other students from smaller schools are EQUALLY important. Will someone explain to me how these decisions are reached in which school to invest in and which not to invest in? Maybe there is a logical explaination someone enlighten me please. A gym is not more important than a school building.

You are talking about a school board in which only one member showed up for a budget meeting! What do you expect?
But I bet the same ones that have been in forever will be voted in again so they can do more of the same old nothing that they have been doing!

It would be great if some of you would run for the board of education. This would give more ideas and more input from a variety of people!

I would love to but I am not from Chilton County and thus not in the click here. I now live here and work here but I don't think everyone that disagrees with the bd of ed has to run to office to make it better. Just stop voting for the same old crew each time.
I probably would not of voted for the gym or at least without more information.

WAY TO GO MR MOORE! WE WOULD NEVER WANT TO HOLD UP ANYONE FROM PE. GUESS SUDENTS AND THE FACT THAT CHILDREN DO NOT EVEN HAVE BOOKS FOR CLASS AT THORBY, DO NOT MEAN MUCH TO THE BOARD OR MR MOORE . BUT DON'T WORRY WE WILL BE FORCED TO EXCEPT THE SAME OLD EXCUSE AS ALWAYS. NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE IN THIS COUNTY MAKES YOU WONDER WHY PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO LIVE IN A COUNTY WHERE THEIR CHILDREN DO NOT GET THE SAME TREAMENT AS OTHERS AND WHO ENDS UP LOOSING, THE STUDENTS! BUT LETS MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE A MILLION DOLLAR GYM FOR THEM TO PLAY IN. THERE ARE ALWAYS PEOPLE WHO COMMENT THAT WE ALWAYS COMPLAIN , YES WE DO WHEN YOU GET THE SAME THING HAPPENING OVER AND OVER WHAT ELSE ARE WE TO DO? AND THEN TO SAY THEY DECIDED TO PUT OFF A PROJECT TO ADD MORE CLASS ROOMS AT CLANTON ELE. MAKES ME EVEN MORE UPSET, BECAUSE THAT MEANS THAT WILL BE THE NEXT THING THE BOARD DOES WHEN FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE. THEY PROBABLY DO HAVE ALOT OF NEW STUDENTS EVERY YEAR BUT IT IS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE MOVING THERE TO GET THEIR CHILDREN THE SAME EDUCATION AS CLANTON.

When I lived in Slidell, Louisanna, we used to go to a little bar on lake Ponchartrain called "The Chicken Drop Lounge". They had the very set up you just described, Graves.
Really fun place with delicious Cajun Food and Live music. They had what they called a Hank Special.(Jumbalaya, crawfish pie, file' gumbo)--Yum!
You put your money on the square(s) that you thought the chicken would "mark".
Speaking of chicken drop gambling, maybe we will have the chance to vote "yes" to a state lottery again in a year or two.
I doubt Mr. McGregor is contributing much to the state's Schools. The lottery would be helping by now if it had passed before.

Here's my opinion of it and this is NOT fact only my opinion. Clanton has money the other towns don't. In every county seems like you have one school that is always above the rest in our case it's Clanton's.
The ONLY way a gym should be added is IF all the leaky roofs were fixed, fire alarms were fixed OR if the parents raised the money to build the gym like Thorsby and surrounding areas did when they built the Hunt Memorial Gym. Thorsby doesn't have lights for their baseball teams either all games have to be played at home during the daylight hours. However lights are not more important than books either but just an example.
I would like to know how these decisions are made and wouldn't it be better to have a board member from each school district? I'm from Thorsby but I could be objective if Verbena's school was falling in around them and Thorsby needed a gym. I believe I'd prioritize.
But hey can't complain just campaign and run for office, maybe these folks are doing the best they can with what they have, i don't know I'm only speculating.

THORSBY, to have a board rep from each district would be nice but that would mean there'd have to be districts and those are something we do not have here.

How do you or can you get an elected board member out of office?

If the gym leaks why not fix the leaks? Huh? No, no, no. The BOE is right. Spent $1.267 millions and buy a new one. OR! We could take the money and stuff the leaks with Ben Franklins. Seriously though, these "leaks" can be fixed without spending $1.267 million for a new gym. Just like Verbena's gym can be fixed without building a new gym. Instead of using all of the funds at one place why not spread the wealth to all of the county's schools.

24 new classrooms is not what Clanton Elementary needs, it needs Administrators to stand up and take care of the di spline problems that exist in the classrooms they already have. There are discipline issues that are not being addressed in that school. Not only is there a lack of administration in the school but the BOE is not interested in addressing these issues either. Mr. Moore has made the statement that he "can't" do it- I must be wrong but I thought he was in charge of the entire school system. This is crazy. He will not get my vote in future elections! If he can't even stand up to a principal then how can we expect him run the entire system effectively?
