Devils dropped: MHS out of playoffs with 2nd round loss

Published Saturday, November 14, 2009

LOACHAPOKA – Maplesville on Friday fell behind early and could never catch up against a tough Loachapoka defense, falling 18-12 on the road in the second round of the state football playoffs.

The Class 1A No. 4 Red Devils did themselves no favors by making mistakes early and often.

“We weren’t ready to play, and that’s my fault,” coach Brent Hubbert said. “Mentally, I thought we’d be in better shape.

Hold on: Loachapoka’s Jywon Moss is tackled by Maplesville’s Cameron Morrow during the second quarter of Friday’s second-round playoff game.

“It’s the second round of the playoffs, and we’re jumping offsides, not playing assignment football. That comes down to coaching.”

The mistakes were especially costly for a Maplesville offense that never could move the ball consistently.

The Devils’ one sustained scoring drive came in response to the No. 5 Indians (10-1) taking a 12-0 lead. Maplesville (10-2) drove 64 yards in 3:08, and the drive was capped by a 6-yard run by Hunter McCay, who pushed a pile of bodies into the end zone with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter to make it 12-6.

The hosts appeared gassed at that point, but then senior quarterback Patrick Moore turned in the play of the game. Moore kept the ball on a 3rd-and-short play from the Loachapoka 21-yard line and broke numerous tackles at the line of scrimmage before breaking free and sprinting down the right sideline for a score.

The try for points after the touchdown failed—all such attempts did in the game for both teams—but Loachapoka had an 18-6 lead Maplesville would never threaten.

The Maplesville offense turned in one of its few highlights of the night a little later, though. Junior quarterback Matt Hamner dropped a gorgeous pass in between three defenders and into the hands of sophomore receiver Chris Bailey, who picked up a block and went 75 yards for the score.

That play came with 3:36 left in the game.

Maplesville’s onside kick attempt failed, but the Devils would take possession of the ball twice more before the final buzzer. As had happened too often during the rest of the game, though, a big, fast Loachapoka defensive line poured through the Maplesville front and pressured Hamner.

Loachapoka junior Tracy Brooks intercepted Hamner as he tried to force passes downfield on both of the last two Maplesville possessions.

Loachapoka scored first on a slant pass from Moore to senior Gregory Moss on a 4th-and-goal from the 5-yard line with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

The Indians made it 12-0 on a 16-yard pass from Moore to junior Rontavis Dinkins with 4:23 left in the third quarter.

I think the question of the hour is....Will ANY TEAM IN THE COUNTY play Maplesville? I didn't think so...its been asked numerous times...but the answer is always no...hmmm I wonder why that is? Wouldn't it be great if they would & maybe kwsgraves could be arrested for making such crazy comments on every CA comment page!

GREAT Job Devils! Can't wait till next season!

ha....wouldnt be a shock to me..haha.....get it.....SHOCK....any idk what your talking about MHSALUM.....the schools dont choose the schedules.....its from the state, the coach or players or even school have nothing to do with it.....its all up to what the state chooses

The state does not make out the schedules. Teams do have to play the schools in their regions, but there are still open games left to play 10 games in the season. As of right now, Maplesville has 2 open games for next year and we can't find anybody that will play us.
It's a shame that the other schools in the county won't play Maplesville, because this would be good gate money for either team.

I agree, I don't know why the small county schools don't play Maplesville. It's an easy bus ride, and like one person said it's a good gate because it's close. It probably has something to do with how dominant Maplesville has been. The only small school to have really even close games with them lately has been Verbena and that's not too often. Thorsby and Isabella are usually blowouts. I guess they're afraid their fans would get arrested and tased!! ;)

well...i have been told other wise, and that it is not the coaches choice, because verbena next year will not be playing donoho...they are playing st jude next year instead, was not coaches choice...but hey, i may be wrong.....and second, mapp has changed regions, but you know what i would really pay money to see??? a mapp vs. clanton, jemison, or even like they tried a couple years back, hoovers 10th grade team, they sound like good games, i cant deny it, mapp has a serious team

Good one KWS! Seriously what do you have to do to get arrested at a high school football game?? Or maybe a better question would be why would you do anything that COULD get you arrested at a high school football game?? :) Hey look, an opposing team's fan on our side! Let's get him!!

VHS I think you're thinking about the regional games. Those are mandated. Donoho is not in VHS's region next year. But there are three games that the schools can play with. For instance the annual rivalry game with Marbury. I'm not really sure why Verbena is in the region they're in. Maplesville and Verbena should be in the same region in my humble opinion.

ok, well i guess i was wrong, didnt know donoho was changing regions...lol, helps to know that i guess....and yea, i think we are playing billingsly instead of mabury...but yea....i miss the old region...i dont like this knew one...we play teams 3 hours away....again....just opinion......
