Veterans Day program set for Wednesday

Published Tuesday, November 10, 2009

The public is invited to honor local veterans during a Veterans Day program Wednesday, Nov. 11 at American Legion Post 6.

The program will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a time of refreshments. Admission is free.

“The purpose of this program is to help folks remember veterans and mostly just keep up the honor and privilege of serving a great country,” American Legion Post 6 Commander Jerry Grooms said.

Grooms encourages citizens to not only consider veterans past and present but also those who will serve in the future.

The patriotic speaker will be Commander Robert Threlkeld, retired, United States Navy. Threlkeld, a native of Verbena, first served as the main propulsion assistant aboard the USS Flint and subsequently served in other commands in various duties to include the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, the guided missile frigate USS Carr, Destroyer Squadron Thirty Six and the destroyer USS John Rodgers.

Upon retirement in April 2001, he was hired by Tenaska as the plant manager of two natural gas fired combined cycle plants in Billingsley.

He is married to the former Rebecca Alred of Clanton.

Wednesday’s program will be put on by DAV Chapter 33, Clanton VFW Post 3193, American Legion Post 6 and American Legion Post 343.

Post 6 is located on Enterprise Road in Clanton near Barth Lumber Co.

Every year there are parades and events which honor veterans.
That's the way it should be.

Every year, I miss going to those events, because I am working.

I would like to see the employers, who are so proud that they
hire Vets, show us a little courtesy and give us Vets the day
off on that solemn day.

That way, we Vets who still work, might be able to pay respect
to our fallen comrades in arms, and thank those who follow in
our foot steps.

This is the first time in 3 years I've missed this event due to it not falling on a Saturday. I don't understand why this is not a more celebrated holiday. I wish we had a Veteran's Day parade in Clanton even more so than a Peach parade.

JUST TO SAY THANK YOU!!!

To all the Veterans, the future soldiers, and those on foreign soil today, I would like to say THANK YOU! Thank you for what you have done, what you are determined to do, and what you are doing right now.

Unfortunately, we (civilians) tend to take advantage of all of the privileges and freedoms we have. We forget about the way things could be if we did not have men and women brave and strong to stand up for us day in and day out.

Since I do not make time to say it enough, Thank you for all that you do and all that you stand for - Please remember that we do appreciate you and that we do all love you.

"Together - We must be compassionate, love one another, and pray. "
