What is this?
Cover Native American month
Published Saturday, November 7, 2009
Dear Editor,
I would like to see an article, pictures or more on November being Native American month.
We have a lot of rich history locally and in our state. As a minority, we get little recognition.
You can get information from Indian Affairs in Montgomery or Web sites like the Echola Cherokee site.
It would be interesting to read about population, meetings, resources, etc., as an Echola Cherokee of the state of Alabama.
My 82-year-old mother has written and had published in books poetry about our people and their spirit.
African-American month, Swedish Fest, etc. get lots of recognition. Please, I have requested this for several years to a deaf ear.

I agree that the Native Americans should be recognized more than just a mention. My Great Grand Mother was full Porch Creek Indian. She passed away when she was 98 years old sitting by the fireplace with no pain no one around her knew she had passed. She just simply went to sleep. I am proud of my Native American Heritage! Now and forever!. Thank you and I hope this helps.

Many of us have Native American roots. I've traced and documented my own, but I won't trouble anybody with it here. Sadly, the mother culture continues to go uncelebrated in this country. The profile of Sacagawea on the front of a coin is hardly a tribute to our Native people!

I too as so many are, am a Cherokee form NC. Grand father left reservation as a young man to make white man wages, became a Carpenter, Plumber, Electrician and block mason, He met my Full Blooded Irish Grandmother in Stevenson Al. I would like to comment on the month to recognize NA, I do not fell it necessary to have a month but its nice to learn at anytime. a fact, all 365 days a year that NA were here before anyone and they were treated very badly so that others could gain control of their property and left them with nothing. I find it funny (not ha ha) that that same things is still going on today here in the USA I call home. Just the people have chaned and the countries are different. I do not practice any traditions of my heritage. I am a American Native Indian by choice not force. I find it hard to understand what the big deal is like with the African American thing except for what it is worth to them. most never came from africa and even tho some were slaves along time ago. I do not get any type of Goverment money for being a NA, dont want any and am against anyone else getting any, or any type of Heritage. All the people alive today were never a slave or were free from government law of america. If you live here then you should take on the mantal of American and should start acting like it. Hanging on to and learning the foundational reasons this country was formed in the first place. So many people over the years have lost their lives for the cause and the american cause is freedom. That would be feedom to work, save, marry, have kids, without fear. Fear from terroist and government domination. Wake up you all. Stop worring about what none of us can change and pitch in and do you part, dont ask for your part. thanks for reading some of my thoughts.
