Deer breaks into store

Published Thursday, November 5, 2009

An empty Clanton store was broken into early Thursday morning — but not by your traditional intruder.

A deer entered the former location of Corner Fair, located at the corner of Second Avenue North and Seventh Street, shortly before 7 a.m.

The animal shattered three windows upon entering the store and went berserk, leaving blood all over mirrors and walls and nearly taking out a ceiling tile.

“He went through three windows, I guess, in one jump,” said Jud Messer, whose father, property owner Ken Messer, was in the hospital at the time.

“It pretty much looked like a murder scene in there.”

The deer was reportedly first seen along Highway 31 near Goose Pond Park and was followed through town. Clanton Animal Control Officer Chris Whittle contacted Jemison Animal Control Officer Bobby Tucker for assistance. Tucker used a tranquilizer gun to subdue the 80-pound animal, and the deer was later released into a wooded area outside the city.

Whittle said the break-in was a freak accident.

“This time of year [deer] start acting crazy,” he said.

Tommy Glasscock, son-in-law of the store owner, estimated the deer caused several thousand dollars in damage. The store had just recently closed.

“We’re just thankful he didn’t come in when the store was open,” Glasscock said. “I can only imagine what he thought when he came in and saw all the mirrors.”

well im glad the deer wasnt seriously injured and was able to be escorted to a wilderness area but folks be rest assured this is the time of year that they all start acting like they been taking acid and are tripping outta their heads. keep an eye out on the sides of the roads and be careful when going outside in the late evening and early am hrs...i once had a confrontation with a buck on my back porch at 4 am on my way to work... we were both caught by suprise but it was very unnerving to be standing face to face with a huge buck not more than five or six feet in front of me...thankfully he spooked and took off in the opposite direction and i went back inside and sat on the couch till my legs werent wobbley anymore....

Well first off I am glad no one got hurt, meaning humans as well as the deer.
But the fact remains that lomg as humansnkeep taking away their land, they will keeop coiming in town.
It is OUR on fault thatbthis is going on.
Just think 20 0r so years ago you didnt worry about or even about where all the wildlfe would go.
And in case no one knows I am very much for and stand uo for their right.
Anyone that hurts as animal needs to be under the jail in a 6 foot hole snd stay there forever.
The way I look at it they don't deserve to be treated in amyn kine of human nature. Any person that hurts a animal or old person needs to spend the reat if your life 6 foot under.
They don't even deserve to breath the same air as you and me,,, They din't deserve nothing...

Well, all I can say is this: I will say it once and thats all.
As far as animals being better than humans...nada! My
daughter was coming down 22 highway one evening to see me
I lived in Maplesville at the time. She is driving along and went by a bank where unbeknowest to her a buck stood looking around.
He (the deer) decided to jump off the bank right on my daughters wind shield. Thank God he didn't come all the way into her windshield and kill her. Now, some say there is never a reason
to kill an animal like a deer. I say, if they almost kill my child they better move fast. She was so very scared she came on to my house with the deer still on her car hood! Kill an animal for no reason? No! For food or to save a life ? by all means! My opinion whats yours? Thank you for listening or reading this I was happy to share. You all be very watchful!

I had a deer chase me and my husband around in our yard a few weeks ago. It looked crazy and was charging us with it's horns. It finally left after several very intense minutes! Why do they go crazy this time of year?

Hoping insurance is kind. Deer are crazy this time of year. Thanks to one big buck on I65 last week, totalled my car. UGH ... a trip to Bass Pro Shop could have and would have been so much cheaper. Shame after all of the damage they cause, we can't hang them on the wall. The old store would make a good sporting good store ... : )

Steve, I am hanging up the cammo. 18 months ago went deer hunting with a Farmer ~ Acquired Lyme disease. UGH so decided to give the woods a break. LOL This time right in the middle of rush hour traffic, this one totalled the Ford. Good thing, my back and neck were the only injuries. No one hit me during the aftermath. Naturally that rack wondered somewhere. While I do love to hunt ... I never intended my car to be a muzzle loader this time of year. LOL you know me, instead of getting in the ambulance, I had all of them looking for my trophy mount. LOL~ He should be on the wall today. Am okay and thanks.
