K-9 officers show out for students

The teachers probably wished their students were as well behaved as the dogs that were on display Wednesday at the Central Alabama Police K-9 training facility.
Students from Chilton Christian Academy and Hope Christian School in Pelham oohed and aahed as policemen and policewomen from around the area demonstrated the abilities of their K-9 counterparts.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said it’s important to take advantage of such opportunities to impress on young minds the importance of law enforcement.
“A lot of times, kids are scared of police,” Davis said. “We want kids to know we’re their friends, we’re the good guys.
“This helps to build those relationships. It gives the kids the opportunity to see what we do.”
And the exhibition was surely effective.
“We can bring out machine guns, the SWAT truck, whatever, but their favorite thing is always the dogs,” Davis said.
Davis’ wife, Sweet, owns and operates the training facility off County Road 42 in Jemison.
The business has produced, among others, dogs trained to search for narcotics, bombs and cadavers, and many of these dogs showed their stuff on Wednesday.
Officers from Clanton, Chilton County Sheriff’s, Prattville, Shelby County Sheriff’s, Millbrook, Autauga County Sheriff’s, and Harpersville police departments and the state Department of Corrections were present.
