Accurate census vital to county, leaders say

Published Monday, November 2, 2009

County leaders say an accurate 2010 census is vital for Chilton County’s future.

To prepare for the once-in-a-decade count, the Chilton County Commission and the U.S. Census Bureau will hold a planning meeting Tuesday morning in Clanton.

Officials from city and county government, education, local businesses, faith-based and community organizations, and the media will meet at the Alabama Power Company at 10 a.m.

County Administrator Vanessa Hendrick said it’s important that everyone in Chilton County be counted in next year’s census.

“Everybody needs to be counted, so we can get all the help that is available,” said Hendrick. “The count determines how much federal funds are distributed to our county.”

Hendrick said census data is used to:

•Distribute more than $300 billion in annual federal funds.

•Determine eligibility for housing assistance and rehabilitation loans.

•Redraw legislative districts.

•Improve programs and services in the fields of education, healthcare, transportation, social services and emergency response.

Part of Tuesday’s meeting will help set up a Complete Count Committee. The CCC will devise a plan to raise awareness about the census and increase participation.

How in the world are we ever gonna get a accurate census for chilton county when we have all these illegal immigrants living here.. aka MEXICANS.. do you think they will honestly tell you there are 40 of us living in this 2 bedroom mobile home.. get real people.. as long as there is a uncontrollable illegal immigrant problem in this country we will never know for sure how many people live here...

Peachy, do you really believe the census is about just counting heads? I'm giving you credit here for leaving out the important issue of districting, funding, and the political landscape shaped by our census. As for illegal immigrants go, many in Chilton County are Guatamalen, Honduran, and yes Mexican. But they wouldn't be hanging around if it weren't for your beloved peach industry/farmers. Then there are the unlicensed contractors using them as cheap labor. Your complaint echoes of those about blacks 60 years ago. Guess some things really NEVER change in Chilton County.

No problem. Your president is likely to make them LEGAL very soon, thus buying voters for the 2012 election. Reagan did the same thing, it was wrong then, too.

kw: I'm not speaking for the Peach, but I took his/her complaint to be with ILLEGAL immigrants, not citizens that happen to be black. You and I both have complained about the same thing here many times.

True. It's just that many folks see a hispanic person and immediately assume they are illegal. Want to see illegals, come to Vegas. Many Serbians, Lithuanians, Phillipinos, Vietnamese, Indian, Pakisthani, Ethiopian, Chinese. The hispanic group is probably THE most legal minority!

"Many Serbians, Lithuanians, Phillipinos, Vietnamese, Indian, Pakisthani, Ethiopian, Chinese." Most of them probably came here with a passport on a ship or airplane, not stacked 75 deep in a 15 passenger van or by swimming across the Rio Grande, breaking the law in the process. But, it's true that not all hispanics are here illegally or that they are the only demographic here illegally. But, I think it's safe to say that they are the greatest offenders. Actually, I think that the greatest offenders are the folks who hire people that they know, or should at least highly suspect, are here illegally.

BTW, isn't it about time for Rickey to pipe up and claim to be half white, half black, and half hispanic. I wish he would just go ahead and admit to being a half wit.

There goes my Diet Coke breakfast through my nose, AGAIN! LOL! I believe you're up a full six pack you've caused to be spewed through my nose with comments like that one. And, come to think of it, all of them have been directed at his rushin royal hiney rickey!

Sorry about the egregious waste of fine Coca-Cola. :D

You guys start a fuss with Rickey when he hasn't event commented yet! ☺:).

Nov, What makes you think the illegals will be made legal by our president? Been listening to Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh (The Republican lie broadcast puppets) again?

Apparently he doesn't need them to get votes......and I doubt he'll need them in 2012.

Posted by November162000 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

kitty: As a matter af fact I do, when I have time, listen to Glenn Beck (who BTW gives at a minmum of audio and usually also video documentation of his assertions, inconvienient truths, I know). I don't often get to listen to Rush but I wish I could. I also watch Olberman, Madow, Sanchez and occasionally even Couric, though it takes considerable amounts of Alka Seltzer to listen to those idiots. But, I get the idea that obama will evetually make them legal from Nancy Pelosi and Rhom Emanuel. I actually heard them allude to that on CNN back in September after the famous Joe Wilson incident. I haven't heard obama say that he wouldn't sign a bill that included that but do you think that he would pass on that? I believe that the hope is that they can slip it in under the guise of the health care bill fiasco, but I feel that they will slip it in somewhere. If I turn out to be wrong I will say so.

BTW, what "lies" is that you are talking about? The "lies" about Van Johnson being an avowed communist, or the "lies" about ACORN attempting to assist an illegal (not to mention immoral) operation? Or was it the "lie" that the NEA (a taxpayer supported entity and thus is supposed to be apolitical) was organizing to assist in the propaganda support of some of obama's agenda, namely health-care reform and cap and trade? All of these thing were reported on from actual tape. Had it not been for Fox News reporting on these "lies" Van Johnson would still be one of the so-called czars and ACORN would still be taking taxpayer money and the NEA would still be operatin illegally because the other news outlets turned their heads on these and a miriad of other issues. And, just out of curiosity, if you think that Fox News is an arm of the GOP or invested in "lies", which I disregard, do you not think that MSNBC, ABC, and CBS are arms of the DNC and lean heavily to the left?

As to whether he needs the (as of now) illegal vote, you must not have been paying attention to your man's plummeting favorability numbers. If things continue as they are now, and I think they will, he will need more than the help of ACORN and the illegals to get re-elected. The tide is rising fast. People are beginning to realize that the thought they were voting for a moderate when in fact they voted for a far-left radical idealogue and they don't appreciate being lied to. Although, I don't understand how they could have been that easily duped, I saw through him clear as day.

For the record, I'm NOT a republican. I'm a conservative. This would preclude me from being a republican.

"You guys start a fuss with Rickey when he hasn't event commented yet! ☺:)." Can't help it, he's irresistable! :D (And easy).

OK I usually don't weigh in on these matters, but today I am. Peach...you obviously have some kind of problem with Mexicans; legal or illegal. I don't understand racism. God created us all- white, black, brown, etc. And if God is not partial, why should we be? Racism is fueled by ignorance and fear. I am a white woman born and raised in Chilton County but somehow I have not taken on the rotten attitudes by others in this county when it comes to race.

Posted by November162000 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 1:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

CORRECTION: "Van Johnson" should have read "Van Jones" in the above comment. Sorry for the mistake, I certainly would not want to insult the president by mis-spelling the name of one of his favorite communists.

Posted by November162000 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 1:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

countyresident: I'm not speaking for PeachCapitalusa, but I didn't see anything at all racist about his/her comment. What I read was that he/she had a complaint with people being here illegally, as do I. There is nothing about that to insinuate that Mexicans or people of any other nationality are inferior to us, which would be the defintion of racist. I found the comment to be accurate, but incomplete.

Posted by countyresident (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

November....re-read the comment. it states..."illegal immigrants aka MEXICANS".....I wouldn't have had such a problem with the comment, if it had been left at illegal immigrants. But no, just HAD to single out Mexicans. And to ask if anyone expects them to answer honestly??? Yeah I would see that as racist!

I did some work last spring for the Census verifying addresses so that forms could be sent out.

I personally had more issues with WHITE LEGALS than with any group of ILLEGALS.

There was an old man in Jemison that put his hands inside my car while verbally assaulting me. It was the only time I was truly scared-though not the only time someone treated me poorly.

He was absolutely out of control!!! He told me to stop driving down his road...apparently it angered him that people had been using "his" county road as a cut through.

Part of my responsibility included driving down all roads in my assignment area-unless they were behind closed gates. He did not understand this.

I was amazed by the large amount of people who said they had never heard of the Census.
Not people who are young-but people in their 60's and 70's.

CrimusK8T: Funny story! I remember living on an old dusty county road where if a strange car went by...something was going on! I used to deliver mail and went to an apt with a certified letter and when I knocked a guy yelled in an unfriendly voice "Who is it?" When I told him who I was and I had a certified letter through the door, he yelled "Who's the letter from?" When I told him the company name he opened the door and he was a BIG BURLY guy and he said, "sorry for the yelling...just wanted to make sure it wasn't the IRS!" and from there he was really nice.

I'd like to see the "proof" the Beck can show about Van Jones being a communist. Seems he had some association with a Marxist organization in his younger days after college. That hardly makes him a life time devoted communist.

Your mistake in calling him Van Johnson is understandable since there are hundreds of hits on the internet with that same "communism" crazy rhetoric - and they can't get his name right either! Duh.....!

Posted by November162000 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 6:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

coutyresident: I read it several times. As I said, I thought the comment was accurate but incomplete. Incomplete in that, as kw pointed out, there are illegal immigrants from other countries besides Mexico. Other than that, I'd say it was pretty much correct.

Kitty: Beck gave several video and audio cuts, in Jones' own person and words, taken recently. One example was from a book that he wrote just a few years ago after he got out of jail in which he proudly claims to be a communist. Other audio and video examples are much more recent, as late as early this year before he was appointed as an advisor on "Green Jobs" to the president. If the video and audio evidence were fabricated then I really doubt that Jones would have been canned by the administration. And I doubt that they would have canned him anyway, even though they knew, or should have known his background, had he not been out outed by Beck.

My mistake was just that, a mistake. It occured to me that I had misspelled his name after I had driven about 30 miles from my computer. I can't comment on what others on the internet have said. I've seen the video, that was good enough for me. The only "communisum" "crazy retoric" is coming from Jones and his supporters.

Anyone else pulling for the "YANKEES", who has almost as many hispanics as Phillie! Plus one Asian. LOL! Anyone check their immigration status before now?

November, there are PROBABLY many more Asians, Middle Eastern, North African, and Western Slavics here ILLEGALLY than Mexicans. Many do come here on a work/student visa and then do as you and I could do any day. Just blend in in a large city. They stay beyond their expiration date. Thus becoming ILLEGAL, or they just spoil. LOL! There are MORE than most realize. One just has to spend a few weeks in New York, LA, Vegas, Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, Atlanta, etc... to know this. Seriously, how many Ethiopian Fine Quisine restaurants are in central Alabama? They are numerous in large cities, and the hired help is indigenous to the establishment. What is fine Ethiopian quisine? Grashoppers? Ants? Red Clay balls with fried Hoodia cactus?

Rickey could tell us, since he is culturally rounded from Thorsby. He's half rushing, half negro, half fruit, half nuts, and wholly flakey! LOL!!!

Come on Rickey, we know you're reading and itching to type. You stil expecting a diplomatic apology to avoid an international incident with his royal hiney?

Come on, now, Graves, I need some backup on this Republican Rhetoric. I don't have time to write a long rebut, like our intelligent follow commenter, November, has. Please help!

Posted by November162000 (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 9:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

kitty: How many times do I need to say it; I'm not a republican, just a conservative American. No rhetoric here.

kw: I never said that there wasn't people of other nationalities besides Mexican here illegally, but I seriously doubt that the illegal hispanics are out-numbered by any other group. I really can't imagine the others that you mention pouring over our borders by the thousands per year as do our friends from south of the border. But, it matters not. One is TOO many, of any nationality if they are here illegally. And I'm NOT in favor of magically making them legal by a stroke of the pen.

Well, I have two retirement spots picked out. One is in St. Marten, the other Portabello Panama. I love both places. Living in both places is akin to the times WE, you and I, grew up in. With NO political parties. Just, ends of the Earth Parties.

Kitty, you are in the wrong geographical location to argue Democrat vs. Republican. America got SUCKERED by Karl Rove. He figured out how to sell "Christian Conservatism" to the less than politically educated voter in rural America. Then, "POOF" two towers fell in a large city. A drunkard, cocaine abusing, blundering embicle, stood on a pile of rubble and piously said a prayer. He proceeded to strip Americans of individual liberties with a coined phrase, "Patriot Act". And again voters drank the Kool-Aid. In November of 2008 America said, "ENOUGH"!!! And once again, the kool-aid is flowing because two republican governors were elected last night. Funny how Faux News claims to be "fair and balanced" as long as their stance is sustained as anti-democrat rhetoric. They, Faux News, have done more to hurt conservative republicans with their vicious, hate filled, rants by people like the morman kid Glen Beck and Barney Frank's scorned lover, Sean Hannity.

Posted by kwsrgraves (anonymous) on November 4, 2009 at 10:45 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Furthermore, the liberal media, November loves to bash, don't spend every waking moment trashing republican candidates with vile hatred. If Sean Hannity reported a REAL news event, Christ would return immediately! The end of earth would follow immediately. Watch how much time Faux spends trashing dems instead of proving the positives of repubes. It's really funny. That's why America dismissed their Palin birth push at the polls last year.

Good Job!

kw: Dear friend, of all the ridiculous, bone-headed and false things that you have written (many of which were tongue-in-cheek, often recognized only by my trained ears/eyes), the above comment takes the cake. For you to believe what you just wrote, you could never have watched any of the other "news" outlets. I, unlike democrats and other liberals, can distinguish between news reporting, which is the bulk of the Fox News day, and political commentary programs, i.e. Beck, Hannity, etc. Have you ever watched Olberman or Madow on MSNBC? Apparently not. Granted, their shows are also a politcal commentary programs, but if you want to hear vile hatred then that's where you'll hear it. I have never heard any hatred, vile or otherwise, expressed by any Fox News Channel commentator, and neither have you. That's certainly not to say that I agree with everything that they say, though, but I do the majority of the time, or at least MOSTLY agree.

What's the matter kitty, having to get someone else to carry the water for you? I do realize, though, that it's hard to defend against the truth. A very short google session should give you all the evidence that you need about one your president's favorite communists.
