County’s fiscal problem is all too real

Published Friday, May 29, 2009

Chilton County Tax Collector Tim Little signaled the first official warning shot, reflecting the dismal financial conditions being faced by the Chilton County leadership.

Little announced Friday his office would suspend sending out tag renewal reminders to Chilton County residents.

Why? The office cannot afford it.

With the already tight 2009 budget for Little’s office, they faced a new challenge when the United States Postal Service increased postage rates, pushing Little’s budget over the edge.

It is true the collector’s office is not required to send out reminders. It is something his office and offices around the state have done for decades to not only help remind residents when their tags are up for renewal, but also help in the collection of those tag fees.

This should prove to those county residents who may not believe our county faces a financial challenge that the challenge is real and the potential cutbacks are even more real.

This service has been a courtesy to residents for a long time, and it may never come back.

If our governments are eliminating this courtesy, what essential service will be the first to be cut?
