SEACO gets $50,000 grant

Published Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Forty-five workers at a Clanton company will learn new job skills thanks to a $50,000 grant.

Southeastern Anodizing Co. (SEACO) — a metal finishing, fabrication and assembly company — will enlist instructors to provide year-long training to its incumbent (already on staff) workers. Areas of focus will include quality management, work flow, continuous improvement, inventory management, and leadership.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administered the grant, which was made possible through federal stimulus funds. The grant was awarded by Gov. Bob Riley’s office.

“While many firms are sitting on the sidelines waiting for the current economic slowdown to take a positive turn, Southeastern Anodizing Company is using the opportunity to strengthen its competitive position in the World Marketplace,” General Manager Austin Brewer said. “Obviously, we understand it’s not the engineers and management that makes a company successful. It’s the people.”

In operation since 1997, SEACO is a supplier for the aerospace, agriculture, automotive and construction industries. They are currently doing components for Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan and Chevrolet.

Examples of non-automotive projects include power equipment, lighting, and wind-proof sign hangers for Interstate signing.

Anodizing is an environmentally safe electrochemical process that converts the aluminum metal surface into a porous aluminum oxide, ultimately creating an end product whose finish is more durable and weather-resistant. This result, combined with an array of color finishes, opens up many application possibilities for companies who anodize products and components in commercial, industrial, and consumer applications, even jewelry and artwork.

Company officials estimate the training will boost efficiency by 10 percent and increase sales by 15 percent within two years after the training is completed. The long-term earning potential of employees who complete the training also will increase, company officials said.

“In today’s economy, Alabamians must continue to upgrade their skills to remain competitive,” Riley said. “By learning new skills, these employees will strengthen their company while expanding their opportunities for advancement.”

You're right. The supposed conservatives are showing themselves to be nothing more than hipocrits. Some call themselves conservative on one hand and take "stimulus" money on the other. They need to slap themselves in the face and register as democrats!

You're also right about some republicans falling short of the virtues that they espouse. It is fitting, however, that the democrat party doesn't claim to be the party of morality or family values. At least they are honest enough not to do that. If they could only admit to being socialists, then they would be TRULY honest. But they would still be wrong about almost everything. :)

The thing that makes this country great is that we have the left and the right; we have capitalism and (dare I say it..) we have socialism. I am confident that we will continue to maintain a reasonable balance between these two opposing, economic and political systems that will keep the USA strong and prosperous.

What gives the government the right to judge one company worthy of these so-called stimulus funds and others not? The very idea of the federal government handing out money to private businesses would have led our founding fathers to take up arms against a new foe - the very system their blood and sacrifice brought into being! The nation was founded on the very simple, very basic concept that the government and those in the government, be they kings or presidents, have no right to exploit the people (taxes) for its own interest or the interests of those who stay in their favor. Here, we have five workers, FIVE mind you, being trained at the expense of the American taxpayer. This is the very essence of taxation without representation - we the people have no control and no say over how the money taken from us is used or spent. This stimulus (it disgusts me to even call it that anymore) was designed to do nothing more than grow government and grow government influence and power over the private sector. Already the great and powerful Obama has declared himself the final and undisputed king of General Motors and Chrysler and countless other institutions. And he's only just gotten started!

As for this concept that we have capitalism and we have socialism - please do yourself a favor and enroll in a basic government class. The two cannot coexist and we are seeing this first hand. Something cannot be both state controlled (socialism) and privately owned (capitalism). This nation was not founded as a capitalist nation but a representative republic of loosely aligned states under a small, limited central government. The concept of capitalism as an economic system marries perfectly to the concept of limited government and is one of the reasons our nation has not just succeeded but excelled and dominated on the world stage. This is also one of the myriad reasons we are beginning to flounder and are now threatened by truly socialist nations like China. We do have a fail-safe, the election cycle. The question is will we stand against the forces that even now drive us farther and farther down the road toward European Laissez-faire socialism? I wonder.

Is that a joke?

How long have you been living in this country??

We have all kinds of goverment controls and regulations....AND we have free enterprise and private property ownership.

Our military isn't exactly what you would call privately funded and there have been times in our history when citizens were drafted.

We have government programs to help the poor, sick and elderly AND we have private businesses and corporations owned by free citizens and/or stockholders.

It's not a terrible thing. I'm glad that although, my family was poor, I was able to get a Government grant and a subsidized student loan and go to college (some of that awful socialist idealism). I didn't have to be from a wealthy family to get an education.

Like it or not, by definition,we have a combination of capitalism and socialism.

REK1138: Apparently some folks were playing with coloring books during U.S. History and Civics classes. You are utterly and completely correct in your comment.

I wasn’t referring to the “Socialist Party” whose influence has steadily diminished since the 1920’s. The word socialism takes on several definitions, however, there is positive idealism associated with the term when you consider things like the government providing benefits to those who would, otherwise, be left out in the cold.

Definition:
Socialism - a political and economic theory or system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned by the community collectively, usually through the state

Examples of socialistic systems in the US: the military, the postal service, public schools, the highway system, state and federal parks, Social Security, Medicare. In Alabama, even the liquor sales are socialistic!

Ok, you can resume your slurs and insults, now. Have a nice day! ☺
