Wreck victim identified

A Montevallo man was killed Saturday when his vehicle struck a tree on Highway 155 in Jemison.
A vehicle driven by Richard Haynes, 62, was traveling toward Highway 31 when it left the road about 10 a.m. Jemison Fire Department arrived at the scene and found the driver dead.
Chief Bobby Tucker said, because of the absence of skid marks on the road or other signs that would point to loss of control of the vehicle, the driver might have experienced health problems prior to the wreck. No other vehicles were involved.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
A dog riding in the vehicle was extricated and transported to the Chilton County Humane Society.
"I've been in this a long time, and that's the first time I've extricated an animal from a vehicle and it lived," Tucker said.
Joe Murphy, director of the Humane Society, said the animal will require surgery for a broken right front leg.
Katy Drain of May Veterinary Clinic North in Northport has volunteered to perform the surgery at no cost to the shelter.
Alabama Veterinarian Specialists in Bessemer performed the dog's initial evaluation, also at no cost to the shelter.
"By looking at him the first day he came in, you wouldn't have known it's the same dog--he was in a lot of pain," Murphy said in a telephone conversation Monday while the shelter staff could be heard making over the dog, Buck, in the background. "By the time he's all healed up, he'll make somebody a great pet."

A friend of mine accidently hit a dog once and broke a few bones and took it to Pet Haven. I think he said they got it patched up and sent it to the shelter when it was recovered enough.

I am a friend of this family. The gentleman driving the truck was enjoying a Saturday morning drive with his new little buddy, Buck...a pit bull puppy.
Little Buck suffered a broken leg, but will be fine.
Pray for this precious family. Father's Day will be especially hard on them. The family is very gracious, and they will sorely miss their dad / husband, and I will miss my dear friend.

I work at the Chilton County Humane Society. I'm not sure who you talked to when you called, mtfarms, or what day you called, but the only call I can remember of an injured dog within that time frame was a call about a dog that had been hit by an automobile on a Friday. The Clanton animal control officer was on vacation that day and we did send someone out to get the dog, we examined him and couldn't find any signs of having been hit by a car despite the fact that he could barely move his legs. We took him to a vet and found out that he had tick paralysis. We rehabilitated him, and he has since been adopted.
What we are not set up for, is being animal control officers for the county. We are an under funded animal shelter, with limited staff, that operates solely on donations. I agree that Chilton County needs some sort of animal control. This is a concern that should be voiced to the County Commission. One person will not get anything done, but if enough people come to them, or show up at County Commission meetings and voice these concerns, maybe something will happen over time.

we carried the dog to the vet he has a broken leg, we are gonna keep the dog. lack of funds is an easy excuse for you not doing your job.

Condolences to the family. Hate for this to happen to anyone at any time, especially before fathers day.
Dont we have an animal control officer? I thought Mr. Whittle was doing a great job given what he has to work with.

I am the Director of the Chilton County Humane Society.
We at the shelter would like to express our deepest sympathies to those effected by this tragedy.
As for the puppy, "Buck", he was examined by Rhonda Buxton, DVM at Alabam Veterinary Specialists in Bessemer. Radiographs showed that Buck has a bad break to his right front leg just above the elbow. An orthopedic surgery will be required to repair this injury. Currently, Buck is resting comfortably (with the help of pain meds) at my home.

Thank you, JMurphy, for taking Buck to a vet for care. Hopefully some funds can be raised for Buck's surgery or maybe the family will see that he is cared for in honor of their dad and husband.
I will be happy to donate to Buck's care as I know bone surgery is very expensive.
My condolences to the family on the loss of their loved one.

After hearing about the death of Buck's dad and how the little puppy was injured, a veternarian in Tuscaloosa, AL has offered to repair his broken leg if the injury does not need the help of a specialist. She will know after looking at his xrays. For those of you who want to contribute to Buck's vet bills, I'm sure help is needed for his diagnosis and xrays done at the emergency clinic in McCalla/Bessemer where he was taken on Saturday evening.
For more information about Buck's progress, you can call the Chilton Co. Humane Society at 205-755-9170. I'm sure the staff there can update you on his rehabilitation and care. Sounds like little Buck may need a new home, also.

Did this man not have a family that the dog would go too?
Posted by ronburgundy (anonymous) on June 22, 2009 at 7:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Why does everyone seemed to be more concerned about this puppy than the man's family?
Posted by thirdforce (anonymous) on June 22, 2009 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)
ron...My thoughts exactly. The HUMAN victim's family needs our prayers and concern more than the surviving dog.
I love animals myself, but let's keep in mind the dog is alive and well but the young man lost his life.

It seems that mtfarms is using this family's tragedy to take a shot at the Humane Society. Ron, you are correct, this story is about a human life that was lost. My prayers go out to the family of the gentleman that was killed.
Luckly the director at the humane society had enough sense to take Buck to an emergency vet on his own time to try and save this dog. Many humane societies in this county, especially ones not in large cities, do not have the means to provide medical attention to injured animals. This is not the purpose of a humane society anyway.
As for animal control, the City of Clanton has animal control the County does not.
Because of mtfarms the tragic news of this mans death was overshadowed by one's person need to stir the pot.

I totally agree clantontransplant, msfarms reframed the whole point of the story. I admire our humane society workers and know that they do the best they can with the limited resources available to them. Visit the humane society and see that it is no glamourous place to work. It is a hard job that involves difficult and emotional decisions concerning the welfare of animals. They are overwhelmed with the number of animals they take in daily because of neglect or the owner can no longer care for their pet due to economic difficulties.
However, I hope that the family of the victim who lost his life who may read these posts knows that there are many people praying for them during this very difficult time.

My condolences to the family. The article was titled about a "MAN KILLED IN JEMISON WRECK", but the theme of the article seemed to rely on the firefighters extracting the dog, successfully, from the wreckage. Then, the aftercare of the dog. No followup in regards to the individual or his family.
Therefore, thoughts and prayers to the dog and the family.

A dog can be replaced many times over, the young man that was killed in this wreck his life stopped and can never be replaced no matter how much you talk about it or what you do.
The prayers should be for the family of this young man, and instead of money being spent to help the dog, don't you think that just maybe the family of this young man may have been able to use the money?
Don't get me wrong I love animals very much have a dog and 2 cats, and a few months ago a dog that I love dearly was poisoned by someone and I spent money trying to save her, but they couldn't.
If it come down to me having to choose between a animal or my husband or another family member, they would come above anything even the animals that I love.
This is a very sad story and my thoughts and prayers go out to this man's family.
One day you will meet again in heaven, where there is only peace and happiness and NO crazy things like this going on to where people put things that they seem to think that are important, but they are not!
God Bless you.

Lord, I pray forgiveness for the ignorance of man ...
Posted by LittleLady (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't think that ANYONE has ANY RIGHT to say what someone "should" be praying for!! God listens to everyones prayers NO MATTER WHAT THE PRAYERS ARE ABOUT!! I love people and I love animals. And by George if I want to pray for a DOG then I am going to pray for a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's too late for the man right now, but this poor innocent animal needs a home so I'm glad that people are concerned about him. Maybe one of the concerned people will adopt him. I've already called about him and it looks like I won't be able to but I guarantee that if I could I WOULD!

You tell 'em LittleLady!
My condolences to the Richard Haynes family.
And livin4christ, how old does somebody have to be to stop being young?........... 62 is a young age? Just wondering............

I agree with Littlelady. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the dog. Why do all you people have to stir up trouble just because somebody makes a comment about a dog. Why can't people be concerned about both without catching flack about it. Choose your battles wisely!!!!!

I JUST HOPE THE FAMILY DOESN'T SEE ALL THIS. IT'S RIDICULOUS THAT EVERY STORY PRINTED IN THIS PAPER GETS TURNED INTO A FREE-FOR-ALL.

Well...sorry but I don't care who reads it. Aint NOBODY gonna tell me what I should and should not pray for!
But yeah, AELLISON, I do know what you mean by that. I happens on almost every story. It's silly.

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." ~Mohandas Gandhi
Hmmm...He was right about a lot of folks who claim the title Christian.

Phil, no one is perfect. That's why our Christ is so great! He is a forgiving God and he loves us no matter what we may do or say. I'm sorry if I've offended you but I don't just "claim" the title. I am a Christian and I'm very very proud to be one. I pray that you are too...?

thank you PhilBurnette If we (myself too) would be more CHRIST-LIKE,than we would not we posting nor reading some of this trash. And yes I think we need to pray for our animals. If GOD didn't care about them, why did GOD have Noah built the ark for them.
I Pray this family finds comfort and strength through our LORD JESUS CHRIST .

my opinion not that it counts, from the attitudes displayed here i think most of these people need to start by praying for themselves. remember the bible says love is not puffed up. but should be patient concerning all things.
Posted by travlr423 (anonymous) on June 23, 2009 at 9:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)
cont: It is my understanding from the article that a doctor has already agreed to perform the surgery on this little puppy from the cares of her own heart and at her own expense. so some of you that are offering to help with the cost of this surgery might want to consider donating those much needed funds to the local animal shelter for less fortunate animals who have no one to count on. I think our animal shelter should be praised for their work against the odds they are facing daily. but that's just my opinion, what's yours

LittleLady, I am an ordained minister. Not pastoring a church currently but working every day as a Chaplain, serving with other Chaplains across the country to help active military, veterans, and others.
That said, my posting was not to attack or condemn others but to point out that we call ourselves Christians but do not always act very Christ-like. I pray for us all every day.
We all let our fleshly side slip out once in a while and say or do things we should know better than. We show bias, say spiteful things, tear others down, etc. In our pride and anger we do not show the love of Christ.
Gandhi's observation applies to all of us at times. We must truly repent of such actions and forgive others as we want God to forgive us. God bless you every one.

My condolences to the Richard Haynes family. And as for you other people whom have made this into a message board there are websites for that please go to them and post away!!!

Couldn't agree with you more bamaboy07.
It never amazes me how people can be so ignorant, especially on the internet. Many who have posted have no idea what the family is going through since this horrific accident happened.
They are very good friends with our family and I personally resent the absurd talk represented in a few of these posts.
My mother always said what goes around comes around and people who cast stones should not live in a glass house. Go get a reality check people if you can't stick to the topic of the article.
Maybe the newspaper needs to keep a better check on what content they allow.

I just had to make a note on all of this. The man in this article is my Daddy. He had ten grandchildren and three children. My Mom asked me to take a look at all of this. I will say that we appreciate the prayers and support of all the people with comments. The dog is FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My Daddy is in heaven!!!!!!!!!!!! Please remember that we are REAL people with REAL feelings and we have lost our Daddy. The Humane Society has been extraordinary to us all this time. A dog will NEVER compare to my Daddy! Please stop with all the nonsense. All that matters is that the Lord will sustain us all and the dog during this time.

The Richard Haynes family wants to thank ALL of you for your thoughts, prayers, and support over these last days. It is surprising that our precious Richard and Buck generated so much interest. God continues to comfort us in this time of mourning in answer to your prayers. Richard made his salvation sure many years ago when he professed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior. It is our personal family "motto" that we will all "meet at the river" :) and we know Richard is destined for the family reunion. We appreciate the Chilton County Humane Society and all the others participating in Buck's rescue and treatment. Richard loved Buck and had gotten him only three weeks prior to the accident. Richard had a terminal Chow Chow who is almost 11 years old and was fighting a battle trying to cope with the Chow Chow’s remaining short time. The vet gave our Chow Chow "2 weeks to 2 years," and he has had almost two full years!! Richard rescued his Chow Chow as a pup when someone discarded him and his siblings in a remote rural area. Richard had also in a way "rescued" Buck. Puppy Buck demanded Richard's attention, leaving much less time for Richard to focus on his older dog’s demise. Buck brought a new sense of cheer to Richard. We are very thankful that Buck survived the accident and so appreciative to every one who played a part in Buck's rescue and recovery. Buck had been the recipient of lots of love since Richard became his dad, and we have been advised that Buck is recovering well and multiple families are standing in line to adopt him. We do plan to make a donation to the Chilton County Humane Society or a reputable rescue group. We are so thankful Buck's story has a happy ending, and we know Richard's story has a happy beginning. Richard has made his last earthly trip, and is now awaiting the arrival of his family and loved ones. There are lots of special people in this area who have been unbelievably kind and supportive to us through these difficult days. Thank you, Chilton County, for your compassionate concern. There will never be a way to adequately thank everyone who has assisted us through these days. Support and comfort have been overwhelming--including the compassionate State Trooper bearing the sad news, the emergency technicians, the Coroner's office, the wrecker company, many of you who prayed—a list impossible to complete. Even the Christian man who lives across the road from the accident site told us he went immediately to the site and began to pray for us family members when he saw Richard had gone home. God's payday is waiting for His many children who are always giving of themselves knowing there is no payment in return on this side of heaven; but as an old Southern Gospel hymn states, "God's payday is out of this world!"
