'Immoral' request leads to arrest
Published Thursday, June 4, 2009
Clanton Police officials confirmed they had arrested a Maplesville man for “enticing a child, minor for immoral purposes.”
Nix
In a release Thursday, Clanton Chief of Police Brian Stilwell said his department had arrested Benny Ray Nix, 57, of Maplesville for allegedly approaching a 12-year-old girl in the West End community. In the release, police report Nix allegedly offered the minor “money and alcohol to go with him for immoral purposes.”
According to statements taken from witnesses, Stilwell said the girl “fled and went home. Mr. Nix apparently followed the girl home, and he offered the girl’s mother money to be allowed to take her daughter.”
Stilwell said the mother immediately called the police. Nix was apprehended on 11th Street in Clanton.
“I must commend the young lady and her mother,” Stilwell said. “The young lady did exactly what she was supposed to do and run for home and told her mother.
“The mother and her daughter were able to give an excellent description of Mr. Nix and his vehicle, which led to his immediate apprehension.”
Nix is currently being held at the Chilton County Jail under a $10,000 bond.

Another good job for the community of the West End, standing together to get this pervert off the street for a few hours any way. Now lets see how long it takes this incident to play out in court, the child will probaly be in high school. Didnt they use to keep foster kids back in the day? Now thats somethingto think about.

This statement comes from living out there and knowing some of the people there. Every one does not have that life style that lives out there, but as the younger generation takes over, well, we see what is produced. The fact is that I know he is a pervert because I know the man, and the fact is that they did keep foster children and the fact is that with all this putting off these trials so these sorry attorneys can continue to make money off the drug cases and child molester, the kid will probaly be in high school, but thats how those act on the other side of the tracks. Pretend we are the good people all the while financing most of the illegal activities. I would never take offense to anyone else knowledege, I write it and speak it the way I see it, and I have not looked from your eyes and you cant look from mines.

you havent seen anything from my eyes, and thanks for sharing that heart felt response with me.I would much rather trust that culture then the "lets put on a good face while in the public eyes and as soon as we can get home lets put our sheets back on. I /personally trust the hood culture more then I would trust most of those clowns across the tracks. I dont blame my mistakes on my race or how others treat me, and I once again can only speak for myself, but I dont nor wont allow anyone to treat me any different then I treat them. Respect isnt given, its earned.I can not walk in your shoes and I like the shoes I walk in, I would not trade them for all the sheets in Clanton.

Oh dear ... another racial argument?
Folks, good behavior and bad behavior can be found anywhere, it doesn't matter the side of the tracks. A look through the sexual offenders list online will show you plenty of people --pause-- I just opened a different browser, there are 87 people on the Chilton sexual offenders list and only a handful of them are black. Most are white middle aged men.
And as for sheets in Clanton... well... there are sheets everywhere! Racism is not limited to this town or this state or the south! The WORST racist I ever met was from Ohio.
As for the "culture" I know quite a few folks from that side of the track and the ones I know would certainly not be going along with this and consider it part of their "culture."
This is all SO counterproductive!

If the story is accurate and the suspect did solicit the 12-year-old girl and then have the NERVE to follow her home and attempt to bribe the mother to sexually abuse her child this is doubly appalling! The bravery of this young girl to flee this situation and run away to tell her parent is to be commended! If the picture used in this article is a MUG SHOT(??) (look at it closely) the suspect is smiling as though the whole thing is a joke! I am sure that the young girl and her family feel sickened when they look at his smug grin....gold chain and all!

I did not know that being a pervert came with a skin color.

Hey Graves, I have seen you comment on so many different things in our newspaper and most of what you have said is just plain out smart mouth. Now from my understanding, you no longer live in Clanton so in my opinion, you really need to worry about what is going on in your small world and leave your comments to yourself. I am extremely proud to be born and raised in Clanton and furtermore, I am proud of our PD!!!!

This is a very sad situation. Thank God the young girl responded to the situation the way she did. Had it not been for the quick actions of the mother to contact the police this pervert may very well have remained on the streets to pursue another victitm. I have lived in the West End Community all of my life. The comments that are often made about the community from people who are always looking from the outside are really simple minded. This situation could have happened in any community. Monstors such as Benny Nix come in all shapes, sizes, colors and creeds. West End is not the bad immoral place that a lot of people would like to think that it is. There are good people doing good things within the community just like there are bad people who choose to do bad things. But, this is true for all communities. Affluent communities have the same problems, but they would much rather keep their dirt behind closed doors. So people should really stop throwing stones, because the very stone thrown at someone may ricochet back and hit the thrower.

Turbobat, I was wondering the same thing, but was too polite to question Mr. Graves after he indicated that he didn't live here. It is interesting to me that several contributors no longer live in the area, and they are frequent writers-and frequently say negative things. All this looking back they do makes me wonder why they moved. Certainly if they think it was so bad here, you'd think they'd just slam the door on their old life and move on.
I love Chilton County, and believe that even with some growing pains and adapting, it is God's Country. This is the time of year when our vegetables and fruits are the very best health food you can get your hands on.
Ms. Reece, I agree whole heartedly with your sentiment. I always appreciate reading your level headed comments in the sea of negativity.

The issue at hand has nothing to do with race. Sexual predators are found among all races, religions, cultures, and are both male and female. The point should be that children should be educated about what to do when approached by a sexual predator. The young girl did exactly what she needed to do to remove herself from a dangerous situation. Hopefully when more sexual predators see stories such as this in the papers and on the news they will realize that communities are sick and tired of children becoming the victims of such incomprehensible crimes. Research has shown that sexual predators can rarely be rehabilitated. This is why consistently talking to children and teens about recognizing the lures that sexual predators use is essential.

penandpaper, i have to agree with you for the most part. concerning both sides of the tracks. but what happened to the good Ole days when you could go into any predominately black community and find the Ole timers sitting on the front porch or up under the Ole shade tree picking and singing some blues and a little craps game around the corner, but now all those guys are gone and the new generation well they would rather sit on that front porch or under that Ole tree and sell drugs and lure youngsters to the same life style. but what they dont understand is they are losing a very important part of their culture. it would be great to see some of the guys in west end try to bring some of the old days back to the younger generation before its completely lost. have a little music, not only tell them but show them who people like T-Bone Walker, Albert King,Albert Collins, Buddy Guy,B.B. King, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Lightnin Hopkins, and so many others, this is where it all begin. oh yea, dont forget about Big Mama Thornton. these guys have never had the recognition they deserve in the music world and it all started with them. get these kids off the street and get their minds out of the false promises of today's society. there is so much black and white history and great stories that these people tell through their music and its all being lost. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and our latest icon Pres. Obama well their all important parts of history in the making, but it didn't start with them. it all started with those Ole blues icons. its all in getting back to the roots.

Graves, you dont have to try to get me to comment, just ask, I will give it to you straight. I hope the Advertiser keep tabs about this story and lets see what the verdict is. If he did it and I believe he did from the article because I have to ask myself why did he go the mother house, to try to smooth it over? I am very proud of the action of the child and the action taken by the mother. Graves I think what bought this to a race issue is the fact that I didnt give the big bad police dept any props. They only did the job that we the tax payers pay them for, if that offended you well you'll be okay.

My mom says she know graves and i've spoken to him so yea, he's a real person.
People lets not jump to conclusions, remember innocent till proven guilty.
Over 40% of ALL allegations of rape or intent to rape are in fact false allegations, because someone got mad at or hurt by the accused, and are looking to get even with them. Rape and the intent to rape is always a he said she said unless there is physical evidence and witnesses.
If in fact if this man did this and is found guilty I believe he and and all men who rape or try to rape children should be castrated, tourtured, and nailed to stakes in the desert and left for wild animals to finish off.
But until the ALL facts are presented we don't know.

Good comment Penandpaper...so often folks get off track of the reported information in their lengthy narratives. Truly it is important that children are taught much more than "mind your elders". They need to know what to do when approached, whether by a stranger, or (more likely unfortunately) someone they know.

no, not really know of him. but the song has nothing to do with him. i just sat here and wrote this song as it came to me. pardon the spelling of some of the words but its more about expression than the grammar. i could have wrote on paper but i was already sittin at the computer as it came to me and what better could i ask for. write the lyrics and their copyrighted all at the same time and it didnt cost me a dime. eat your heart out u.s. copyright office. if you like the blues and you can relate to these lyrics, i hope you enjoy. but those of you that might want to steal these lyrics they are officially documented at june 05,2009 at 11:25am thanks to the clanton advertiser.

OK, Auntnay, I kind of know kwsrgraves and I can attest to most of what he says. He does reside in Clanton area and he works out of town - Las Vegas - for a while now. He's a smart fella. I've been reading his (and everyone else's) comments on the Clanton Avertiser for several months now.
Be careful who you fuss with, on these comments. This IS Chilton County and you might find it's one of your kin folks.
Hey...It happened to me!

Yep, I was there. I spent most of the time at the pool swimming and watching over all the kids there, so, I didn't see everyone that was at the reunion. I might have seen you but I don't remember. "Honey" (Mom) and my sister put on a couple of really good reunions for Granny Warr's (Aunt Shug's) birthday. I wish we could do it again!

I am proud of the little girl and her Mom. All kids need to know how to handle trouble like this, Race does not come into it.

Has anyone given thought to this:
If Mr. Nix was stupid enough to try to entice a 12 year old and then - ASK THE MOM...what makes anyone think he has any sense/brains at all? To me,he's not working with a full deck! This makes him no less dangerous, but he may not have the faculties to know right from wrong.
Again, I'm not defending his actions at all, he might have a low i.q.
