What is this?
More lose jobs
Published Friday, July 17, 2009
Chilton County’s unemployment rate rolled into the double digits in June, increasing from 8.9 to 10 percent, while the state’s rate jumped from 9.8 percent to 10.1 percent — its highest in about 25 years.
The county figure for June, up from just 4.4 percent a year ago, represents nearly 2,000 unemployed persons. Alabama’s figure translates to more than 215,600 jobless persons statewide.
The comparable June national rate is 9.5 percent, the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations announced Friday.
“As I’ve said for many months now, as long as the nation continues to suffer from this recession, so will Alabama,” DIR Director Tom Surtees said. “Unemployment also tends to be a lagging indicator of economic recovery. With that said, we at DIR are doing everything we can to help the thousands of jobless Alabamians.”
The sectors of leisure and hospitality, other services, financial activities, construction, and professional and business services experienced gains.
At the same time, the government, education and health services, manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, natural resources and mining, and information sectors experienced losses.
“We’ve seen some bright spots in the last month,” Surtees said, noting the gains in construction and leisure and hospitality, the latter of which typically grows during the summer months. “But manufacturing has lost jobs.”
The last time Alabama’s unemployment rate topped 10 percent was from September 1981 through late 1984, during which the rate topped out at 14.4 percent.
From a regional standpoint, the state falls behind just one of its neighbors, Mississippi, which posted a 9-percent unemployment rate in June. Georgia was dead even at 10.1 percent, while Florida and Tennessee posted 10.6- and 10.8-percent rates, respectively.
“But that’s no consolation for the 215,000-plus Alabamians who are out of work,” Surtees said.
The Alabama counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby at 7.6 percent, Madison at 7.9 percent, and Coffee at 8.2 percent. Counties with the highest rates are: Wilcox at 24.4 percent, Dallas at 20.0 percent, and Perry at 19.4 percent.
In response to the increasing unemployment situation, DIR has increased its Call Center personnel by 55 percent since April 2008, when Alabama’s unemployment rate began to be affected by the recession.
The department has added an additional call center staffed with 20 new employees, who will begin taking calls from claimants next week, following a three-week training period.
The new employees’ primary function is to take initial claims and handle processing issues with initial internet claims.
Sixty-seven call center employees have been added since April 2008.
Unemployed Alabamians who need to file for unemployment compensation benefits can do so in two ways. They can file on the internet at www.dir.alabama.gov, or call 1-866- 234-5382.

I'm still waiting for the Obamanomics to kick in. How many millions of jobs did Barack say were going to be created by the end of the summer?

What happened to the third coming? Not Jesus or Nick Saban. But Bob Riley. He promised, back in September, that Alabama was "better prepared, and would NOT see as many jobs lost because of our foreign car plants". Did Bob lie to us AGAIN?
As for the Obama plan, I can honestly say it put me to work on a government project, May 2, 2009. And these three projects will last through the next two years. The construction projects on our horizon are growing monthly. So, I am glad to see the stimulus money hitting the streets, (pardon the pun), on new road, airport, powerhouse, and streetlighting projects. Just like the sidewalk to nowhere in Jemison, this money IS hitting the streets.

kw has good long-term vision. I am extremely glad that he has landed a good job. As for Riley lieing to us, I'm assuming it is a rehetorical question :) I hope Edward6 will lighten up on Obama; he's trying to fix 8 years of what somebody else messed up. Its gonna take time. All of ya'll have a great weekend and be safe!

It's good to hear someone working in Nevada is actually seeing benefits from Obama's economic plan. I beleieve one of the biggest contributing factors to Obama being elected was his promise to fix the economy for us. I guess as long as I lower my expectations then everything will be ok.

Ya'll need to get the facts straight. Rickey, that old Obama; he's trying to fix 8 years of what somebody else messed up" excuse is a poor, redundant statement for America's current problems. You've been reading too much of kw's propaganda. As for you kw, I am so glad to see that you (me, myself, & I) are doing ok employment wise. Well, that doesn't include the millions of other people in our nation that come from all walks of life, who either have lost everything or are barely making ends meet. Obamanomics has really helped them move closer to a financially secure life, huh?

"Trying to fix eight years of what somebody else messed up". That's brilliant! In obama's short time in office so far, he has added more to our national debt than ALL other previous administrations combined. This as reported by the OMB and even reported by the liberal media. The cost of the war in Iraq that liberals love to hate so much literally isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to this. And the one to two TRILLION dollar so-called health plan hasn't even been approved yet. And this is what passes for cleaning up previous fiscal ineptness? Good God. In retrospect, Bill Clinton looks like a far-right wingnut compared to the fool that is in office right now.

Well said, November. Now let's all brace for the impending tax increases on sodas, juice, medical benefits, wages, business owners, etc. . But that's OK, government run healthcare will take care of us all. It works so well with the V.A., you know!

It's not just Nevada. We have 6-10 jobs in Birmingham, Miami, Oklahoma City, Joliet, Macon, etc... If you are out on the interstate, all of those trucks hauling freight, and motorhomes are and indicator of a stronger economy than Sean Hannity would have you believe.
As for those losing houses, property, etc... That problem did not just start on Jan 21st 2009. Many of those were fiscally irresponsible people to begin with. We saw this train wreck beginning in 2001. It has been a slow painful one. But, yes, as for Me, my family, and I, we tightened the belt, took other measures, dealt with it, and kept on living. The world didn't stop when I got laid off on OCT.
Two years is NOT a long range plan. I caught the sarcasm. The year 2032 is my long term goal. Two years is extremely long term for a constuction project. But as long as I can work the 18mos to 24 mos projects, I will. Then move on to the next. That's the nature of our work. Job's completed, move to the next. And as long as the contracts call for $8.40 per hour to go into my retirement plan, YES, I'll work the OT. If this plays out tomorrow, I can go drive a truck, operate a crane, sell insurance, switch to full automated instrumentanion, etc... I am a firm believer in WORKING, not whining, and blaming others for my lot in life.

Government jobs are all that's being created in Obama's new utopia. What transportation construction job doesn't stretch into decades to complete? Yes, more wasteful spending by our Federal Gov't. Oh, and be proud to work for the Feds because if Obama has his way, it won't be long before everyone works for him. He'll dictate the way we live, work, breath, get medical care. Soon he'll change the constitution (or ignore it like he generally does) and he'll be our new dictator.
Sean Hannity and all of the commentators have it right. Obama, Nancy, Harry..... they are systematically destroying our country.
Everyone read to get their microchip implanted so we can be identified easily in Obama's new Utopia?

Graves, you do seem to be a hard working individual. But I take issue with anyone who takes more away of what I have worked for. The Robin Hood mentatlity does not work for a successful meritocracy. The spending habits that the government is forcing upon us would bankrupt ANY business.

I don't make enough money for the "GOVERNMENT" to force anything on me. I am in that sweet spot. I make enough to pay my taxes, and less than those who complain about what little taxes they pay due to tax loopholes. I agree with November in the respect that socialized anything MAY not be good. I have sai all my adult life, do away with Social Security. Stop it today. Stop Medicare and Medicaid! Let those who don't save, prepare and plan for old age, retirement, and illness, suffer and die! That is the far right true REPUBLICAN part of me. If you can't pay your way, why should I have to bail your sorry butt out? That is the TRUE REPUBLICAN way! Guess I will have to vote for Sarah Palin now. She thinks America needs to end all SOCIAL programs, like, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, etc.. Sounds good to me. Let ME keep all of MINE and screw YOU! See how REPUBLICAN that sounds?

Biden just never fails to amaze me every time he opens his mouth. "We Have to Go Spend Money to Keep From Going Bankrupt". http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/ar...
Can you imagine if you worked for a company as the Chief Financial Officer and you told your boss that? I beleieve you would be fired on the spot. It reminds me of the Directv commercials where all of the cable company board members are sitting at a table discussing how to compete with Directv and the crazy ideas they come up with.

What I don't understand is why I am still seeing so many signs up and adds for companies hiring and so many people are complaining about being laid off. Perhaps they would earn more money drawing unemployment benefits than they would at some of these lower paying jobs. If you check out the Help Wanted section, there are more than I expected. Granted, they may not be dream jobs, but they are jobs. Plus I still know people who have jobs that don't appreciate them enough to show up for work on a regular basis or don't care enough to do a hard days work while they are there. And a great deal of the people I know that have lost their home had overspent to begin with. Just because the bank may have approved you for a set amount doesn't mean you should go buy a house for that set amount. That amount you may have been approved for isn't a guide for you to use. People are going to have to learn to live a simpler life if they want to get out of this situation. Don't get me wrong, I know there have defintely been honest hearted hard working individuals who have been affected by this recession negatively. But a great part of the problem has been many of us making poor financial decisions. Eventually you have to pay the bill. If you spend more than you take in, there will be a problem. And does anyone ever save up for emergencies these days? Instead of trying to find someone else to fix our self inflicted problem, maybe we should start at home.

2cents, you desrve a penny bonus for that one. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!! If you can't find your dream job in your chosen field, learn to do someyhing else! I did it. If an ex-felon, Auburn Educated, ex-military, ex-cop, ex-husband, current resident dummy, can still make a 6 figure income, even in a bad economy, anyone can. It's not WHO you know, it's how you apply yourself, WHAT you know, and what you can DO! I don't complain about my situation, I am responsible for ME. Not Obama, Bush, my business agent, just ME.
Something in this story quoted by Tom Surtees that caught my attention, was, "In response to the increasing unemployment situation, DIR has increased its Call Center personnel by 55 percent since April 2008, when Alabama’s unemployment rate began to be affected by the recession." This situation didn't just happen overnight! Many saw it coming. I guess the statements my dad used to tell me growing up were true. "Put money aside for good and bad days." "Most people go through life with financial blinders on." and my favorite, "Don't ever settle for being MEDIOCRE." The last one, I live by!

i am all for personal responsiblity... i cant remember the last time i splurged on something i didnt need...i havent eaten in a resturant in over a yr. movies.. lol the last movie i saw in the theaters was THE DOORS movie some where around 1990 or 1991. i drive a 1992 dodge caravan that isnt shiny but shes clean and mechanically sound and gets me where i need to go at 22-24 mpg. what i dont understand is.. not only should we be personally responsible as individuals.. someone needs to tell our goverment that they have to be just as responsible with the money they take from taxpayers....
"Eventually you have to pay the bill. If you spend more than you take in, there will be a problem"
Wake up call to all goverment.. we have a problem... and spending more than we have coming in isnt going to get us any closer to a solution!

They hired people at the call centers, well did any of them come from Clanton? And this building roads to no where and better lights for schools and not laying off teachers and police officers, what's up with this? If Chilton County residents can not afford to send there children to school, who will the teachers teach? They have not turned out many rocket scientist any way! Everyone wants their kids to retain a good education, but if the parents are unemployed how can they supply the child with their basic needs! I guess our teachers will. Who will drive on these much needed roads if they can not afford gas? And as far as not laying off cops, they will have to keep them due to the crime rate that will probaly rise up? They pretend the state of Alabama is hiring, hiring what? They filter the applications and pick up their family members or a kiss-up-friend, something like Clanton does. Same old stale people in offfice with the same old burnt out ideals, pay for your homes and retire! Allow some one else to make a dollar. I feel for the unemployed in Clanton, I have to drive 45 miles one way every day, but its a job. I can honestly say this is a mess!! And it's both parties faults.

America has been spending way beyond its needs and it has finally caught up with us! It's nothing but basic math...If you spend more than you take in then you end up in the red! If we (yes, including my own self) would understand the difference between our WANTS and our NEEDS we would not be in the mess we are in. We don't NEED cell phones, sports cars, vacation trips, name brand clothing, cable TV, and restaurant meals every night. America's greed of competing against our friends and neighbors has gotten us into a big mess. I saw a NEW piggy bank on a program that helps put finances in a very simple perspective that both kids and adults could use. The Money Savvy Pig is a four-chambered, see-through plastic piggy bank that allows children or adults to apportion their money for spending, saving, donating and investing. Maybe this primitive way of appropriating money would be a good way for families to get back on track!

Fox news is generally considered a democrats worst enemy because out of all of the news agencies it's the only one that provides a clear picture of what is actually going on in the world. Also, in tribute to Walter Cronkite I'm going to add one of his quotes:
"News reporters are certainly liberal and left of center" - Walter Cronkite

"Boy, foxnews.com, that's "real" credible."
They've got more credibility than you do KW. When you do little more than blindly tow the party line, constantly fall back on elementary and asinine generalizations (sounds like CNN), and apparently live in Nevada and mooch off the government [insert your favorite euphemism for female mammary gland here], I would hardly be taking about credibility. But hey, that's just me, a non-party towing, free thinking citizen.
There's little point in debating this issue. You either embrace simple economics (or common sense) or you do not. It should have nothing to do with party affiliation. If you believe that it's even possible to spend your way out of an economic crisis then by all means, bury your head in your pillow and pretend that the current administration is going to save us all and the next time you find yourself in a financial crunch, unable to pay the bills, go ahead and buy a new a car, a new flat screen television and take an expensive vacation and apply government logic for yourself and then come back and argue with those of us who don't agree. I'd love to hear your results.

Naaaa,
Fox definately leans to the right most of the time.
People tend to "listen" to what supports their theories.
Like that theory about how this economic mess if the fault of something a Democratic president did a decade ago. Yeah right!
I'm sure that if Mr. McCain was president and gave some more tax cuts to the rich and the large Corporations, everything would be just fine and dandy right now. All that wealth would just be "trickling down" on us to no end!

OOOOHHHHHH!! KW!!! WHOOP THERE IT IS~ DOH!

FOX might lean to the right, but when you consider that CNN, MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC are all clearly on the left, it should hardly be an issue and yet it seems a favorite topic of liberals the world over - how FOX News is so biased poor libs can't get a fair shake.
I have no idea what McCain would do in office. In truth, he is a moderate Republican whose economic policies are way too similar to those of the democrats. Fiscal responsibility is not something McCain has ever been shown to embrace. He was 100% in favor of the stimulus and was instrumental in getting it passed. I like to imagine attempting to stifle our struggling economy with cap and trade and socialized medicine would NOT be on his agenda but who knows. Like our current president and both of his predecessors he seems to have bought into this New Deal ideology that we can spend our way out a recession. If common sense is not your convincer then I suggest we all take a good long look at the state of California. You want a case study, a huge, glaring visual example of tax and spend and tax some more policies at work and their inevitable result - look to the golden state. This is where we are heading, broke, in debt, choked by leftist special interests, and begging with our hand out for someone, anyone to save us...only who is that gonna be? China? Iran?

Just be patient. As soon as Obama and the democrats (not that reppublicans are a leap ahead) get everyone hooked on the government plan, things will be better.
After all, everyone has a job in a communist or socialist country.

REK, obviously, you place a high value on material items, (new car, flat screen tv, nice vacation). I guess we take those things for granted. Haven't bought a new car since 93. Take a cruise every other year or so. Big boys toys, paid cash for. And have no debt other than a minimal house payment. Everything is paid for. You see during the 90s when the economy was good under Clinton, we SAVED. We didn't go on a drunken borrowing and spending binge. YOU sound like you want to blame me because your life, apparently, SUCKS! I worked a 10 hour shift last night. I volunteered because others won't work nights. Even though it pays $52.28 per hour. and then Sat and Sunday are double time. You see, I am willing to WORK. Not sit on my butt and blame the administration for my life. I saw Bush wreck this economy over the last 8 years. Things were good on Dec of 2000. But it steadily went downhill after 2000. I learned to adapt, work harder and NOT listen to ANY media. The "media" doesn't come home with bleeding hands, a hurting back, tired feet, sweaty salt and dirt stained clothes. I do. Consumer goods prices rise. We work harder. You can whine and blame Obama. As for me I am going to have a ham sandwich in about 15 minutes, drink a diet coke, take a shower, go to bed, then, wake up and do it again for the 34.1% shift differential. I plan to buy a new Harley next month. At 45 years old I plan to ride the rim of the continental USA.
Are Obama, (democrats), Palin, (whomever she's bedding), Republicans, (whomever they outsource their party to), or any media outlet, going to GIVE me something for free? NO! And I have NEVER expected them to. If we lose everything tomorrow, we learned how to earn it the first time. I am working, saving, planning, spending, LIVING. If your life SUCKS so bad, maybe, you should give up. As for us, we are praying, loving and living. Nothing has changed.

What is the deal with people complaining if they don't physically work in the locality of Chilton County? For many people who do work in Chilton County they earn less per hour for the same job than those who accept work elsewhere. Sure you may have less travel time, but you earn less money. It's a toss up. And I know many many people who do work in Chilton County who got their job the old fashioned way like by a good work record, good skills, and a good work ethic not because they know someone or whatever other reason. If you have a job right now you should be thankful for it no matter where it is. And guess what? Chilton County is not that populated and there are not that many companies. There are only a limited number of job positions there to begin with. People need to quit blaming other people for all their problems and try to help themselves. And I mean help yourself the legal way by learning new skills, take up a new field of work, etc, etc. How about trying to be so valuable to your company that they can't lay you off. KW.. you make alot of money. But, I don't think it's about the money. It's about how you manage your money.

Exactly. Good point. Maybe with that last comment, I was not clear on that. But, I am awake and 4hrs refreshed now. I, like MANY others across America, am willing to travel to where the good work is while I am young. When I get 60, I will settle for a 40 hr job within 50 miles of home. When I do work at home, I still drive 30-80 miles one way to work. I have been fortunate to work a Mitchell Dam on a couple of projects. CRH on a couple. But for the most part our UNION contractors do NOT deal with businesses in Chilton County. It is considered too far from Birmingham, and there is not enough of an industrial base to sustain much work. Again 2cents, you are working your way into become 3cents, even this horrible economy that OBAMA thrust upon us since January.

At my church, especially on Wednesday nights, we are praying for you and our country. (And for Obama) He really needs our prayers, even if you don't agree with what he is doing and God knows that I DON'T! But nevertheless, he does need our prayers.

Kw... first I would like to say that in most areas I agree with you. It is our reposibility to manage our own home and circumstances. I don't agree with you that if you just keep your nose down and focuse it will work out. Things happen that are beyond your control to cover. My husband and I were also living the sweet life. We saved money and kept expenses down. We bought the house and the van which were all within our budget, still saving money for when we may need it. Then a child gets sick and you have to cover the expenses that insurance does not cover. Then just about the time you get the bills caught up, Someone strikes the heart of your country (9/11), all of a sudden your hours drop down to nothing because no one wants to fly to Florida or take a vacation. The tourist business drops off to nothing and both of you are struggling to find a job that is suddenly flooded with people needing to make an income. And believe me, we were willing to do any thing for an income. All of a sudden your savings is just about gone, you borrow your retirement to keep your head above water, You can't afford the gas to go very far in the vehicle that needs new tires, put food on the table, school supplies, get the braces fixed because an apple broke a wire, the medicine that is required to keep the previously sick child alive till the next day, a baby sitter so you can work what ever job you find, keep the lights ,water on. Do without your own meds so you can spend the money else where, avoid your own Dr. when you start to get sick from your own health issues and get thrown in the hospital. And because you live in a right to work state they release you because they feel your health in affecting you ability to report to work. They tell you this over the phone while your sitting in the middle of a hospitol bed connected to machines. The fact that you have not missed a day in over a year doesn't matter to them, they have applications from hundreds of others that need to work also. I guess what I'm trying to say is that sometimes it does not matter how hard you work or how good it is, crap runs down hill and no matter how hard you try to climb you slip in the piles. I still try to help the good people around me, because we as citizens are responsible to try and help when able. So even though I didn't find a job today, I'm going to fix dinner for my family, invite the little girl from next door to eat because her Lab technician Mom is working the late shift a Waffle House, and thank God that tommorrow is a better day, and I will be there to see it..... All without tooting how perfect I am.

See, dj, you're on the right track. But have the wrong outlook. Being far from perfect, I have made numerous stupid mistakes. Became a felon because of a low income job, (deputy sheriff), got divorced, filed Chapter 13, and two years ago, pushed myself, physically, into ICU for 4 days. Did I ever give up? NO. Did I get, and I love this spineless excuse, "depressed"? HA! HA! That's a good one. I got laid off in OCT. But it didn't kill me. It made me put my plans back on God's shelf.
You see, when you slide down that slippery, slope, enjoy the breeze! When the crap slides down on top of you, package it as fertilizer. Use some of it to further your own growth of YOUR garden, and GIVE some to those who NEED it, (sounds like you have that principle down), and MARKET what's left. Before long, with a little self discipline, you can start your own crap factory. We learn from our mistakes, and bad times.

Been living in the REAL world over 40 plus years. My parents taught me to never settle for being mediocre. I am NOTHING special. But I don't whine and cry when the world doesn't wipe rainbows on my butt, like some do. When it was time to walk away from a low paying job, I did it. When jobs have been scarce, I drove a truck across country. When jobs are good we put 25% aside, no matter what! That's the real world. When I moved into a trailer for 12mos, in 95, I spent nights and weekends, with family and friends, building a house. I could have borrowed $200,000 to buy one. But, I didn't. I saw things a little more realistic. I built for much less. Did a MAJORITY of it, framing, electrical, plumbing, sheetrock, painting, ourselves. When I was 5 years old, I didn't get to sit around watching cartoons. My dad had me on the fender of a backhoe, on his lap on a bulldozer, on the fender of a John Deere tractor, and dragging welding leads for him. I learned to drive an 18 wheeler at 15. I went to college, used my G. I. Bill, became an Army officer, went through an electrical apprenticeship for 4 years, learned to build motors, learned how to repair everything that breaks on a vehicle and the house. I've broken bones, whiskey bottles, and two hearts. But I NEVER blamed anyone else for ANYTHING I have been through. I learned to fly airplanes in college, just in case I needed that skill one day. But, two things I NEVER did; had handcuffs placed on me, or been locked behind bars!
Little biddie, fantasy world is, thinking the path you are on will NEVER CHANGE, the economy will always be good, and people will never let you down. I learned not to depend on people. Only God and myself. The latter doing only what HE let's me!

Littleladie, touché. I will pray for you, your kids, and husband. We can agree to disagree. I was having fun with you, not making fun of you. I apologize if you took it that way. But, don't settle for mediocrity. Keep striving for self improvement, pray, and apply yourself. It will work.
Nimrod, bud, you need to lay off the pot and crack while posting. Stick to beer, it MIGHT make you sound more intelligent, doubtful, but, you need to try something different.
See little lady, that was making fun of an idiot. Didn't take much effort, as that one, pretty much is the given village idiot.
This thunderstorm is almost over, time to get back to work.
