Alabama 155 to be widened, resurfaced
Published Thursday, July 9, 2009
A portion of Alabama Highway 155 between Jemison and Montevallo will soon be widened and resurfaced.
The 4.3-mile portion of roadway stretches from the Shelby County line south to the intersection of 155 and Chilton County Road 33.
The project was let June 26 and will cost between approximately $1.4 and $1.8 million.
“That has been on the agenda for several years,” Rep. Jimmy Martin said. “This project will improve the safety of traveling on Highway 155 between Jemison and Montevallo.”
Martin said he had been pushing for transportation projects in Chilton County, including the resurfacing project of Highway 31 from Clanton to Verbena and areas south. While that project has started, paperwork is still pending on the 155 project, said Jackie Campbell, project manager for the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Campbell estimated that the paperwork would take about two months to complete.
Highway 155 will not only be resurfaced but also widened 2 feet on each side, for a total of 4 feet.
“As narrow as it is, (widening) will make it a lot safer,” Martin said.
The number of working days allotted for the project is 45.

Does this include the dangerous narrow bridge in a blind curve?

My thoughts as well. My next question would have been how...

The fact that the cost is 1.4 to 1.8 million on a 4.3 mile stretch is also a good indicator that NO bridge work will be included.

as well as it is only noth of County Rd 33, which is well noth of that old bridge. I have hated that bridge for years. I drove a school bus across it in the 50's when the bridge was as wide as the road was anywhere else.

By "resurface" does the county intend to actually lay down new blacktop or just pour a bunch of gravel on the road and consider it a job well done. I haven't seen the county do that in a good many years but that used to be their way of resurfacing dilapidated roads, pour truckloads of pea gravel on the road and let the vehicles eventually embed the gravel in the old laptop and for about two months you can't find a windshield in the county without thee or four dings in it.

I travel that road every day to UM to work, they need to work on that bridge and the curve after it too. They have had a couple of people killed in the last year in that area because of the curve and fast driving. They come off the bridge toeard Montevallo to fast on the wrong side of the road. I think our road people need to do some more research.

Here again, bare in mind, that this is a STATE Project. (ALDOT)
Here's the link for state projects:
http://cpmsweb.dot.state.al.us/TransPlan...
Click on Highway Projects; By county; and then choose Chilton from the map. The bottom of page 5 of 6 has bridge replacement for HWY 155 for 2011 over CSXT Railroad (I’m not sure if that’s the same bridge y’all were speaking of).
Page 6 of 6 shows the widening and resurfacing Reference.

Well, now that all the DOT folks have enlightened us on the technical and specific infirmation on this project, what's next on the agenda? Ya'll oughta replace the county commission seats for a week or two and see what ya can get done. Somethin' might actually go the right way, for a change.

"REK, this will NOT be a project that is done by the county. As it is a state route, the bid was let recently and will be done by a private company."
Thanks for the update KW. When I read that the county commission was actually going to repair a road that does not run through the city of Clanton I was expecting the next headline to be "Pigs Sprout Wings and Fly To Recently Frozen Area of Hell." It's good to know that it's business as usual in Chilton County.

I wonder if a stop going both ways would be a solution until they can redo the bridge. It is pretty bad. Of course, everyone (including me) needs to slow down on that road. It is like the Indianapolis 500 out there.

This bridge in question was suppose to be replaced in 1991,surveys were done, but the railroad fought the process due to the delays it would cause them.

I can't believe the railroad would fight widing that bridge. Just look at how fast they repaid their crossings. haw haw haw. I think they come in and pour sand with oil in it to color it to fool the public into thinking they do anything at all I complained about the one on church st in Jemison, and got a reply that it had been fixed, and it still has yet to be touched.
