'Night Out' to be held in Clanton
Published Wednesday, July 8, 2009
Clanton Police and Fire Departments will participate in a “Night Out Against Crime” program Aug. 4. Clanton’s City Council approved a motion at its meeting Wednesday night to allow the departments to sponsor the “Night Out” here.
Police Chief Brian Stilwell explained that both the police and fire departments will have equipment on display and will provide printed materials that explain police and fire programs for those citizens who attend. He said the event has been held several years in the City of Jemison and has been popular.
He said “Night Out Against Crime” is a nationally organized event that brings attention to law enforcement and its battles against crime. He added he hopes the event can be held somewhere like Goose Pond Park and that it would be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
In other business, the council approved an agreement with Jefferson State Community College to manage the civic center now under construction. It passed a resolution that approved the city’s participation in a National League of Cities’ discount drug card program for employees.
Shelby Ellison and Larry Colburn were approved as full-time police officers, and the council approved a motion for Chief Stilwell to attend an Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police in August. It declared William White’s seat on the city’s utility board vacant by resolution and agreed to appoint a person to fill the position at a later date.
It upheld the city’s personnel board’s findings concerning the termination of Dannie Bulger. The board upheld the termination of the former employee when the employee asked the board to review his termination.
The council approved the sale of a beer and wine license to SNR Enterprises LLC. The beer and wine will be sold at the Chevron Station on Lay Dam Road near City Park.
It approved a $27,000 allocation to the Senior Citizen Transit Authority. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the authority returns approximately $15,000 to the city in the form of rent each year.

How is it the City Council can get so much accomplished but the County Commission is still haggling over last Wednesday's lunch menu?

It's probably a little more of a "family" environment there on the Council. It's not always good to get stuff done. It seems like you'd know where the event was going to be held less than a month out, how else can you promote it?
"We're going to have a night out"
"Where?"
"out"
"No, Seriously?"
"Seriously, Out!"

This article is not a promotion of the event. It is a reporting of the actions of the council. Notice the other business as well? The writer just thought the "Night Out" was the topic most interesting/impacting to the readers.
The event, I'm sure, will be promoted in a few days with all the specifics.

I haven't attended a City Council meeting in several years, but in the past, there was very little discussion of any motions or resolutions. The members get copies of all the agenda items (except those brought by the gallery) and they all seemed to know all the details and how they felt about the topics before the vote.
That seems to speed the meetings right along. Not saying whether that's good or bad, just that I've noticed it.

I hope everyone will take the time to attend and thank these men and women who put their lives on the line for the rest of us.
I am glad to see the council members communicate other than just when "in session". This does help to get more things done in less time.
Also, put me in the column of those who appreciate our Mayor. Over the years I have found him to be fair and honest. I hope he runs again next time. He can count on my support.

Sounds like a group of adults working together to do their jobs......refreshing!
By the way....anyone notice that several other articles have "comments disabled"??? The hospital article....the snake article....what's going on????

The comments are disabled on the Hospital artcle because two of us put the hospital down and we truly do not have the freedom of speech. The Advertiser had to shut us up and protect the horrible hospital.

I'll bet your comment aint gonna last very long, there, Mr. Jones. I might be wrong....♥♦♣♠
Maybe the Hospital Administration could put in a few lines in the hospital's defense. Of course, the owners are in Atlanta, GA, so they probably have bigger fish to fry.

LOL, The truth speaks for itself. The Advertiser is in Chilton County and since we live here and they are here, WE HAVE NO MORE RIGHTS. The good ole boy network wins by injustice.

Thank you Mr. Ellison and Mr. Colburn for stepping into these often thankless but critically important jobs. May God bless and protect you.

Thanks to clanton for trying to better the community. With all the news about governments doing nothing but bickering, I'm glad at least some can get along.
As for the comments being disabled. The advertiser has stated in the past they have to protect themselves from being sued for slander. But fret not, free speech is alive and well, feel free to host your own forum. When you pay the bills, you can edit as you see fit. If this was a .gov site it would be different, but it's private owned.

If a comment proves to be generally offensive, then it should be deleated. One can use their own common sense as to what constitutes "offensive." Swear words, derogatory comments, and that ilk come to mind. If however, a comment happens to be in contrast to the view of the Advertiser staff, then they have no right to deleate it.But they want to exercise that little power that they have over the printed word. Also, the entire staff did not sit down and deleat any comments. ONE particular person did because he or she is in disagreement. And this person is too coward to be identified. So, in essence, it is the voice of a coward that wants to silence free speech simply because he/she disagrees with an opposing opinion.

... and if I had gone home after being released by the ER at CMC instead of going straight to UAB ER, I could have been dead, so what do you do? It wasn't food poisoning (it will run it's course, they said), my appendix had burst.
